The car belongs to my father's boss who lent it to us to run in the engine after a rebuild. I also noticed the harsh sound of the injectors and the fact that they didn't put any oil in the injector pump. However it must be an adjustment issue since the fill up didn't cancel the noise. Sadly it affects the performance as well but fortunately cold starts are effortless and the throttle response and idle are spot on. The body is rusted though and the paint is matte which are of course fixable but it can't be said about the cracked weatherstrips. They're hard to find and expensive. The gearbox, suspension and brakes are impeccable, the steering is as it should be: heavy and slow :) Despite being an unrestored car which somehow survived 22 years of communism, it's quite good, I really liked it and considered buying a 6 cylinder petrol model later on. @@rotaryhungary that was very kind of him to lend it to you for that time. Those little diesels need all the performance they can get, but that's good that you noticed it. That's really good that it starts well and has good throttle response. A friend of mine has a w123 300 CD turbo diesel and its turbo needs rebuilding. The turbo lag is terrible and it's slowing it down so much. Anyway, is the rust near the rear wheel arches? I think it's safe to say that every old car likes to rust there, but it's sad to see on a Mercedes. I have a w126 with a good body but poor paint, but it runs great and the interior is perfect. I can imagine that weather strips are near impossible to find for that Heckflosse. That's impressive that the gearbox is still so quiet after all these years. Do you know what kind of fuel economy you got when you had it? I wonder if it got better fuel economy in Europe versus the U.S. even back then. I wish cars here in the U.S. got the same fuel economy as they do in Europe.

@@jacobbelcher3512 There's rust on the bottom of the right rear door and wheelarch. It's not much of a surprise, because as far as I know they didn't get rust protection from the factory. By the way you can buy aftermarket weatherstrips from Turkey, but they're not foamy and soft like the original, which causes the door not to close properly and water will leak into the interior. The fuel economy was 7-8 l/100 km (35-40 mpg) extra urban.

@@rotaryhungary It still held up better than American cars from the time. At least you can buy some form of weatherstrips for it, and then add some other type of weather seal from a hardware store. That would be worth it really only if the old ones were not sealing anymore and you absolutely had to replace them. That is really good fuel economy. The only cars here that get that fuel economy are hybrids. Very few American cars get above 28 mpg. I have a 1983 Volvo 240 and it gets about 46 mpg on the highway, and it is not a diesel. But, fuel economy comes at a cost of horsepower. How much power did that little 2 liter have on that Mercedes?

Hey my dad owned one like this back in the day. He says some models still had the steering wheel gear lever, but his had the regular floor gearbox, the way we know them today. I dont know wether this was an optional feature, or if they just switched the whole production over to the floor gearbox.
