On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 10-30-21.
We're looking at a 1967 Mercury Coogar XR7 in Black Paint. This car has the factory 289 CI V8 engine.
The car's Owner is Ron Mahnke. Ron’s had the car since 1982. Ron shares he felt the Mercury was the Big Brother to the Mustang and that was the car that appealed to him more. He had this car restored and it looks good.
ENJOY!

A friend not mine's dad was a mechanic at the local Mercury-Lincoln dealership in the 60s. His dad bought a new 1967 Cougar that year. Dark blue with medium blue vinyl interior. I didn't realize these Cougar's were built on the Mustang platform. The Cougar seems so much bigger.

What a beautiful Cougar! I have always admired these more than the Mustangs mainly because of the hidden headlights and body-wide taillights of the same design. I’ve never seen the Cougar with these specific wheels, so that’s a nice touch. Thanks Lou for a great presentation!

Lou, a very well preserved Cougar. Clean and correct right down to that gorgeous 289's single exhaust. What I always liked about the styling of this model is how both the rear tail assembly and front grille are stylistically the same - somewhat similar to the Thunderbirds of the era...

Hi, Lou! There it is, the car that made Mercury "the sign of the cat" (ROWRRRR!!!). All those vertical bars in the grille and taillights give it such an aggressive look, and the instrumentation and the woodgrain and leather set off the interior just right. Like the ads in the '70s used to say, "It's like nobody else's car." Thanks to you and Ron for taking us along for the ride in this cool black cat!

Great story, wow its great to see it is a generational family owned vehicle. My cousin had one I was too young to remember much except it was greenish with a black vinyl top, he was in a horrific accident on his way to Michigan Tech for his degree in engineering, his jaw was broken and the car was totaled. Spent months recovering from multiple injuries but he did recover thankfully. Ended up working for GM and retired long ago.

Le chat noir! The obsidian felinian! My parents bought their '67 Cougar new, and it was the first car I ever wrenched on. First car I street raced with and, later, first car I ever got into a pursuit with, against an L.A.P.D. Matador. Mom sold it to a family friend in '78. Snapped a timing chain in 2001 and I bought it back. Sits next to my XR7-CJ. Great looking cars, them Kitties.

My second car was a ‘67 XR7, light green metallic with black vinyl top that I purchased used in ‘72. My mother lived until 1999 and I had several cars over that time. She said my Cougar was her absolute favorite and even had a photo of me standing next to it in a frame on a wall all the way to her passing. Mine also had a 289 2V which was respectable power that got relatively decent fuel mileage for the time. One criticism, Lou. You cannot review a first generation Cougar without showing the rear sequential turn signals! 😉 Thanks for the review. 👍 ~ John

Cool car! The 1967 and later Cougars were based on the Mustang chassis, until it grew up and used the mid-size Ford chassis and then downhill after that. The top Cougar was the XR7 GT, which could be had with the 320 HP Marauder FEM 390. The next year's 1968 version could have had 390 HP 427 FEM V8(the same side-oiler as the Cobra used) and then later the 428 CJ, which was also an FEM engine. The FEM(Ford, Edsel, Mercury) engine was introduced in the late-50's(with different displacements, ofcourse) and was made for decades.

It purrs and growls like a real cougar 🐈, this is just awesome. The hideaway lights just make the car. When they're off the front looks a lot like the back and it works so well. Instead of it being boring, it looks pretty damn stylish. The red lines are a nice touch too. The red spices up the all black car. You got the black, you got a bit of red and some chrome - the perfect recipe for a late '60s pony car. The interior looks a bit european, but in this case this is a good thing. Really nice car, I like it more than Mustangs. I got actually a picture of a Mercury Cougar on my wall, because it's in a calendar for this month 😀

Year later they're discharged and the brother buys a super clean first gen Cougar, metallic green with a different vinyl top,,,hounds tooth ? Long time ago. He has this a year or so and trades if for a Ford Pinto Wagon set up like a custom van back in the '70s (porthole window, custom paint and graphics, etc). Very nice. Notice how the Cougar XR7 tried to emulate the Jaguar XKE (E-Type)? Their names are very similar, and also the dash, with its Smiths-like gauges, center clock, imitation wood grain steering wheel, and toggle switches. Not quite a Jag, but also a very cool cat indeed 🐆

The '67 Couger was based on the Mustang, '68 and later they were based on the T-Bird, that's why the '67 looks so lean and clean. Because of their light weight, the 289 4V moved it along decently and handled well. I almost bought one, by 1969 they weighed over 2 tons with the FE 390 engine, and were luxury cars.

Well Louis you did it again you struck a nerve in my history in my past. I had a 1974 cougar XR7 that I had just painted but I did not want to drive it through the winter months in the Syracuse New York area. My best friend's sister had a 1967 cougar that she wanted to sell. It was not nearly the pristine shaped that this one was in so I used it as a winter rat. It too had the 289 and it was quite dependable. I love the way you keep finding me treasures.

Goodday Lou, What a sweet riding Cougar, it goes to prove you don't need all the bells & whistles, sometimes less is best. I was hoping for the pop open headlights & sequencial indicators. Another great video Lou. I always used to look over the Cougars until a couple years ago and when my Duster was in the paint and body shop there was a 1970 Grabber Yellow Cougar Eliminater that was in the shop beside it and after that I really stated liking the Mercury Cougars. So does your son get to drive the Viper very often? When I was 16 years old I rarely had the opportunity that dD would let me drive him somewhere in his 55 Chevy. I'm 30 now and I have got to drive the car maybe 20 times or a little less. That car is his baby.
