On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 7-5-21.
We're looking at a 1968 Pontiac Grand Prix 2 Door Hardtop in April Gold Paint. The car comes with the factory 400 CI V8 engine producing 375 HP.
The car's Owner is Michael Siblik. Michael’s Mother had this car since new. His Mother after purchasing the car new, passed the keys to the car to Michael in 1995, and as you can see he has been an excellent Care Taker.
ENJOY!

This is an absolutely beautiful Pontiac! The protruding nose always, always told me it was a Pontiac coming down the street regardless of model. As time marches on, I grow more & more appreciative of the Pontiacs of this generation. Thanks Lou & Mike for a great presentation!

I always liked the look of the the '68 GP due to the extreme fastback design and this one is really beautiful. I also love that particular grill with the hidden headlights. It's interesting how the front end is a nod to the '59 Edsel, and the quarters, to the '55 Lincoln. It was time when designers could have some fun. I always say it - the one type of car I sorely miss is the "personal luxury or" "gentleman sports car" type of vehicle. A car that combines both smooth comfort and power. Not all of us want an insect looking, stiff riding SUV for crying out loud! LOL :)

Kudos to Michael for keeping his mom's first car going. As has already been mentioned, the 1968s were the first to wear side marker lights and the ones on this car are beautifully integrated. The front markers used amber 194A lamps and Michael needs to get one or maybe two. I didn't see the front driver's side marker working when he turned on the headlights. Also, these cars really need a strong battery to start when they're warm. My 1969 Olds always did. Thanks, Lou, for showing us this beautiful car.

The last year of the “Big” GP! The ‘69 would go on to be a massive success, and a huge seller... even started the whole intermediate personal luxury coupe that would rule the 70’s. But I love this big brute! This was the last classy GP! 👍😀

luv all the fullsize GP's, from '62-'68. this car has such a massive presence, yet still styled as a personal coupe. if ever a car required skirts, this one is it...seamless continuity with the side sweep. you see '67's now and then, esp the convertibles, but never '68's. beautiful...

Hi, Lou! 1968 was the Grand Prix's last year as a full-size model. It's share of Pontiac sales had gone into decline since its high point in 1963, so it got its own look and its own platform for '69 which turned things around for the series. Still, I think the '68 was quite a dramatic standout with that pointy beak, that big eggcrate grille, those concealed headlamps, that halo vinyl roof and that beautifully appointed interior with that big center console. And it was Pontiac that pioneered the concealed wipers in '67. Michael's mom was wise to have kept this one around all those years, because this is one car you don't see too often. Thanks to both of you for a fine ride in a "gentleman's muscle car" and taking us through that nice covered bridge. (We have our share of those out in the country here in New England.)

The grand prix up to 1972, was one of the best performing cars that GM ever put out. They are an absolute beast on the road, and very few cars of that era could hang with it. Of course you don't typically hear that amongst car enthusiast, but those who owned one know exactly what I'm talking about. I've owned 2, and the 71 Model J was hands down probably the fastest stock production car I've ever owned.

My first job was selling Muntz 8 track car stereos. We used to move the rear defogger to the center so we could install 6 x 9 speakers in the rear deck. Tunes were more important than the driver being able to see out the rear window. We had our priorities straight in the 70's.....LOL PS: We also used the seat belts as bottle openers.

11:57 They made the AC controls look like a second radio! I had a '68 Cadillac, but the AC controls just had the slider and the thermostat dial. DOT, or NHTSA, or whatever it was at the time, along with the insurance industry, was getting after the carmakers to smooth over things like that beak; they were also pushing to get rid of vent windows, though they continued on as an option on Fords well into the '80s. Cool car, being the last B-body GP makes it special.

This "Sporty Catalina" brings back memories, Lou! Even though I do not remember seeing a 1968 Pontiac Full-Size Car ever in my life, our family had a 1967 Pontiac Catalina Wagon (four-doors natch!). I was too young to drive it, but I admired the 400 Cubic Inch Engine. It filled the entire engine compartment. I love the nose on the thing, and we always assumed it was the same car used in Batman, which was a popular show at the time. I think to this day, my family calls it the Batmobile.

Great looking car! My grandfather (whom I was named after) had a '68 Catalina two-door sedan (yes!) when I was little. It had a 400-cid engine, just like this Grand Prix. This car is nice in its own way, even though the eight-lug wheels (1968 was the last year for those) would give it a little more sparkle. At the rear, it looks very much like the '68 Buick Skylark. And those long taillights could have been sequential, like the Ford Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar had at that time. (Were they offered on the GP?) And speaking of the ventless front door windows, it was the '67 model that was the first GP to have them. Additionally, all '67 full-size Pontiacs were the first to have hidden wipers; they weren't offered on any other GM car that year. The '68 GP was the last of the big-body GP's. Then, for 1969, came the spectacular "G-body" Grand Prix, and sales nearly QUADRUPLED over the '68 model! John DeLorean hit a home run with the '69! (9/4/2021)

Amazing car. The lines are so incredible all around the car and that front end is so Pontiac. The interior is so cool. Another great thing about the Pontiacs of this era were those really cool steering wheels. The mid 60’s through the 70’s were, in my opinion, when American automakers designed snd made the most beautiful and unique cars. Definitely my favorites. Have always loved all the Grand Prix’s but my favorites were the ‘71, ‘72, ‘74-‘77. When I was in high school, 2 sisters and a brother were given brand new ‘75 Grand Prix’s of their choosing by their mom. Hate to admit it but I was so jealous because they had my dream car.

Great low key gem of the past. Nice that it has been in Michael's family so long and he put it back in such good condition. Noticed that headliner seemed intact. Wonder if he ever had to have that redone. Those were a problem on some Pontiac's during that time and into the mid 70's. Lastly, excellent job as always Lou interviewing your profiled guests and their own treasures. Thanks.

Thanks for this guy showing his 68 GP. This was my first car in 1975 with 76k mi on the OD, I paid $300.00, I sure wish I had it today, I always thought the 68 GP was the best looking GP of all. Mine was grey, it had power windows and power D-seat, but no AC, one am radio, 400 4 barrel carb with plenty of get up and go, I got somewhere around 15 mi/gal....... You did a good job showing details but you forgot the power up antenna.........

What an absolutely gorgeous hunk of car, you surely don't see anything like that at all, those were just so cool, while you had the fabulous fifties cars, towards the end of the sixties, you had some cars with style & distinction, this is a rare definition, when you had the trunk open showing the paperwork, I recognized the dealer it came from, Eddie Ruch Pontiac was a dealer from the past, I have a postcard of of it from 1974 that I got from a friend of mine when I lived in Arlington Heights, sadly to say that the whole building has been torn down, because when I was in Chicago 3 years ago, I was in Wheaton Illinois for a toy & model car show, I drove past where the dealer was, I'd gone there a couple of times for a brochure on the new Pontiacs, but now it's a memory of days gone by, the closest one can get to a car like that if you can find it is a resin model, that would be a rarity, but the last weekend in October is a Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile, Cadillac car show in Auburndale Florida which I intend to go to, I'm sure I'll find 1 of those at the show, I really wish that Pontiac was still around, also Oldsmobile, we used to have cool cars, now it's all just way out of reach today unless you win the lottery!!

Another great video Lou. When I first moved to the neighborhood I live in now 20 years ago there was an old Pontiac like that sitting under a car port down the road from me. It was was a 3 car port and had the Pontiac under the middle and an old Volkswagen Beetle to the right of it. The Pontiac was gold with a white vinyl top, a little bit lighter gold color than this one in the video. But like this one in the video it was bought brand new by the current owners mom. About 5 years ago it disappeared and just a month or two after that the car port collapsed when we got a big snow. The Volkswagen Beetle got crushed but not sure what happened to the Pontiac. The owner wasn't very sociable.
