Neville Britto is a Volvo guy and, to be fair, he never had a chance. While thumbing through some old family photos at his Scarborough home, he showed me one of his mother standing in front of a maroon 1975 244DL. "This was taken the day before I was born," he said.
The Volvo peers at the expecting woman like a protective dog would, a guardian. In 1987 Neville had yet to be born and his parents were travelling in a Volvo 240. They were the victims of a vicious crash that could have easily taken their lives when a drunk driver collided with them. The many safety features of the Volvo protected the couple, and Neville would be born a few years later. His father would never again buy from any other car brand but Volvo.

I bought a 4 door manual Amazon in 1989 for $165. It was rusting in a backyard in Seattle with almost 200,000 miles and hadn't been driven for over 10 years. I bought a battery, rocked it back and forth to free the brakes, changed the fluids an drove it off. My wife was pregnant at the time and it was my daily driver commuting between Bellview and the city for over 4 years. It was among the most reliable cars I have ever owned.

Had a '68 that I rebuilt to 100% and drove. It saved me from being run off the road by a newbie driver. Got a '69 to replace it and rebuilt that and had it painted a royal blue metallic. That had 220, 000 miles on it when I finally sold it. Would love to have 123 GT these days, grin.

Love Volvo. Specially the older ones. I owned a 142 and a 240 wagon back in the 80s. Sure miss that 142, what a fun car it was. Would love to own one again.

Nice car. l do recall these cars clearly, my Dad owning a Volvo dealership and repair shop in Oshawa, ON, the home of General Motors Canada. But even in that city, the former MPP of Oshawa, Ed Broadbent, who later became leader of the federal NDP Party, drove a Volvo. l have still a letter from Broadbent thanking my father for his service on his Volvo, but was required to drive a GM product because of his constituent base. Long live the old classic Volvos.

One of the best cars ever, solid, fun to drive, easy to maintain and exceptionally durable. My father had two so I grew up with them. Much more attractive than the 140/240 series but which were also great cars.

Great video! The first Volvo I took note of was a 1967 122S two-door sedan that belonged to my 9th grade Speech teacher. It was brand new, and the coolest thing I'd ever seen. The family Oldsmobile never seemed the same.

Memories! I have owned four or five 122s as well as two 1800s, although I did my European rallying in the 70s only with one of the 122s. Another was simply a spare-parts car.

I bought private sale a 1968 122S standard with the B18 in dark green for $1700. On the road in 69. Traded for a new orange 1974 144 paid $5700 at the dealer in Vancouver allowed me $1695 for the 1968. Lost $5. Traded that in for a maroon 1980 244 in Centerville NB. Still love these cars.

Hey all. Was looking around online and--for reasons I am about to explain--came across this great video. I own a 1967 Volvo !22s, also in race car green and also with the BW automatic transmission. At that point, my story diverges from Neville's. My 122s just had some real bad luck during the Hurricane Ida flooding here in NJ at beginning of September--my home stayed out of flood waters, but vehicle was sitting at my mechanic's less than a mile away awaiting a new set of whitewalls, and got hit by a wall of water almost up to the dashboard. Insurance company has totaled the car. I am trying to decide whether it is a fool's errand to try to get it in good running order again. Anyone have any advice? The car is virtually entirely original with great interior that looks just like Neville's and dried out just fine--but I have no idea how much trouble lurks under the hood. Thanks for any thoughts anyone can share!

One of the easiest cars in the world to work on, Dual single barrel Carbs, Each one had a reservoir on Top that you would put transmission fluid in to keep the parts lubricated in the carburetor it was the easiest carburetors to work on! I was hoping he would pop the Hood so we can look at the motor I was wondering if it had the dual carbs which gave it a lot of power when you Floor"d it really did take off. It was also an automatic My Friend and I named it the Pleasure Volvo, I Really missed that car 🥺😥😢😫😭💦 👀👌

Just noticed while looking at this beautiful car, how badly the doors fit. It seems that every manufacturer in the '60s, even Volvo, had problems with bad panel fit, OR is it because your 122S was manufactured in North America? I had a chance to test drive a 122(not 'S') for a weekend in 1962 . The one I drove had ALMOST PERFECT fit and finish, but mine was built in SWEDEN. I decided not to trade my '62 Buick Skylark for the 122 because the ride was WAY TOO STIFF compared to the compact Buick. I do STILL LOVE Volvos though!

I think it is absurd that someone pretending to like classic cars immediately starts talking about performance and modifications. A classic car is only worthwhile if kept ORIGINAL, while any "enhancements" will only detract. As for performance, if you are after that, then go and buy a contemporary vehicle full of "cool features" and electronic everything management and enjoy that for what it's worth.
