1971 -72. I was in first grade waiting at the bus stop when the guy at the end of my road pulls up to the stop sign in his 1971 Big block Orange Corvette with those cool black back window luvers, looked and sounds so cool.... I never forget that sound, I was 7 years old.

I owned that car for a short time it never came out of the garage my friend at the time purchased it for me because I was into mustangs and he was a Corvette fanatic who really wanted me to see why he loved Vettes so much I always liked Vettes just could not afford it we were business partners in body building products and gym wear he was a body builder from California who moved to new Hampshire he liked Vettes but had no clue the difference between a 454 Ls6 and a 1975 350 cubic inch or the value difference he just liked the look when I realized it was a big block I was excited because I've been more into Racing then collecting cars it was a beast tire shredder he said the car was in garage most of its life low miles barn find but you can imagine the hidden issues with a car hidden a Dry garage covered barely driven all original everything anyway he had issues with wife sold a bunch of cars like ten outta 29 Vettes he had hidden all over gave wife 100 k to move back to California he just sold it said he would buy me another later he didn't know it was worth 80 percent more than a regular Vette bought for 8k and sold for the same I was 22 at the time he was 50 years old then his wife knew nothing about all the cars he had she just wanted money to leave new Hampshire I couldn't believe he was that stupid to sell that car after he bought it for me and I paid him I didn't take possession I trusted it was safe in garage he just wanted he gone then find out they weren't really married just been together for long time I was done dealing with him nice guy but not to smart he gave away those cars for a mere 100 k that one car was worth that back then it was yellow gold even had redline tires I wanna cry I would have it today if I brought it home instead of entrusting him to put in garage had lost it never stopped thinking how awesome it would have been with a good tune and sticky tires

Next time, please show the special retracting hood fairing, during windshield wipers actuation or retraction. A sight to behold. My cousin bought a Stingray in that period. A little info: The vacuum operated light covers must have the engine running for vacuum. If Corvette is parked and one the headlight assembly is not closed, just re-start the V8 for a few seconds. Vacuum of systems well then allow full deflections of headlight cover assembly. I learned it indeed. Body [Copper Color] is perfectly matched to vinyl top. Well deserved thumbs up!

I had a '68 435 horse convertible. That car was really nice but it had a few bugs that I presume were ironed out by '71. The LS-6 was still a 475 horse engine even if Chevrolet said otherwise. '71 was a great model year for Corvette as you could have a high performance LT-1 small block (rated at 330 hp) as well as the LS-6. Oh, to have kept those cars from my youth.

OOOHH To have kept so many cars that we saw people buy and rag out and sell for just a couple of hundred dollars, today, you could get many thousands of dollars for those cars, even in the shape that they were in when they were sold back then, Rught!?!?!?

I remember sitting in my third grade classroom looking out the window when my friend Mark's brother pulled up in a 71 454 LS5 Bridgehampton blue coupe. I was in total awe of this car. I vowed one day I would have a Corvette. My first one was a 96 LT1 coupe. Second was a 91 ZR1 and my third one is a 91 ZR1 with 528 H.P. I would love to have a 68-72 . I really like the 70 LT1 . The L46 is a great engine also.

Back in the early 70s I owned a black on black 67 427 435 hp C2 Corvette with all the go fast stuff including the factory side exhaust. It had a 3.36 posi rear since it wasxa daily driver and due to the relatively weak 10 bolt IRS rear and half shafts I didn't drag race the car. It was fast. The engine would pull the car up to just under 155 mph at 6500 rpm. I never exceeded redline. Neverthe less at 52000 miles the plastic teeth on the main timing gear broke off. This resulted in internal damage to the short block. At the local Chev dealership I could get a replacement 427 short block. OR for 250 dollars more I could get a LS6 11.25 to 1 solid lifter cam 454 short block. Easy choice. The heads got new valve springs 2 new valves and a 3 angle valve job at Traco in Culver City . These and the triple carb intake were then bolted onto the LS 6 short block. Slight rejetting on the carbs and breaking on the Traco dyno. Then the serious pulls. After some more rejetting a change in the diaphragms on the end carbs and final timing best pull resulted in 478 hp at 6200 rpm. Perfect. The engine was completely docile. It's serious torque curve started at 2000 rpm and was endless. The engine pulled noticeably stronger than the 427 although it didn't grab revs quite as quickly. I never took the car past redline although at 6500 it still had throttle left. It's a pity that this combination of parts and high compression triple carbs 454 never made it into production. Eventually the editor of Hot Rod magazine offered me enough to buy the car so I sold it. Pity. I never cared about numbers matching and originality. In my world muscle cars existed to be driven and enjoyed. And at that time they were unsophisticated enough so it was alwsys possible to make the suspension brakes and engines better. I still have 2 muscle cars from that time.both are original appearance wise but highly modified under the skin. I drive both on a daily basis and enjoy them. Both are small blocks both have over drive transmissions and both will run out at over 150 mph. Fortunately lll be dead before t h e EV BULLS..T forces IC cars off the road.

I used to see a fair number of 427 Corvettes in the 80s. There was a guy who worked at a local bank branch, who drove a blue 427 Corvette to work every day from roughly 1987-1990. I'd see 427 Corvettes on the rosd more often that I'd see cars like 64 or 65 Mercury Comets. I went to 'Super Chevy Sunday' at Maple Grove raceway in 1985, in return for my Chevy-fan buddy's sacrifice of going with me to the 'Ford Motorsport nationals' several weeks earlier. I saw quite a lot of 427 and 454 Corvettes there. Contrast that with the 1 or 2 Boss 302 or Boss 429 Mustangs I've seen in person in my entire life!

The 71 Corvette roadster was truly an amazing example of American Muscle. . There were actually two different 454 options. My 71 C3 had 365 horsepower, 460 foot pounds of torque. It featured cast iron heads with hydraulic lifters. It had a dual snorkel air cleaner. Also worth mentioning is that it had the deluxe black leather interior, power steering, power brakes, power windows, tilt and telescope wheel, am/fm stereo, and upgraded carpeting. I really miss that car a good regret getting rid of it. 😩

I came across this very same car one day in a remote lake community..it was sitting on the side of the road in the grass with grass growing up around it..I immediatly recognized the hood..jumped out looked through the tore up rag top and saw the engine plate and nearly crapped my pants "425 horsepower-475 lbs ft torque 454 cubic inches-9.0:1 compression" this car had been sitting here for years..the interior was almost non existent due to the weather getting in.. When I was finished with the job I was there to do..I asked the customer about that 4 speed vette..he responded that the neighbors son bought it new then went to Nam and didn't come back..man I got F&%kin chills..he told me friends, family and strangers tried to buy the car but the father wouldn't budge..sure enough I stopped again and looked at barely readable sun bleached odometer..FOUR HUNDRED EIGHTY SEVEN miles !! Later that day I told the story to my riding buddies (Shovel Head fanatics) and a buddy of my buddy was really interested and asked me where it was..I told him.. It was weeks later and my buddy says to me..remember that vette..I said yeah..what a tragedy all around eh ? he says so and so got it !! I was like WHAT ?? HOW ?? he told me that that guy filed a complaint about the car being a eye sore then showed up a week later and made an offer and got the car..I immediately got pissed and cussed the guy for being low down..turns out that low down s.o.b spent 2 years bringing it back to life in his garage.. Now I'm not talking about working on it occasionally..I'm talking with a fever..we would ride over on occasion to see the progress and to drink beer..because this thing consumed his life..no one ever saw him once he got this thing.. the day came finally and it was astonishing ! So after a few little dialing in runs he takes off and we followed at a distance..it seems he's heading to the lake..sure enough after stopping to put gas in he bee lines to the fathers house..we stop a ways back just looking at each other wondering what the F&%k when the old man put his extended arm/hand on our buddies shoulder with a bowed head and his body began heaving ? By now we all had gotten pretty tight helping with this car and also every one of us were Veterans so after a few minutes after the old man was consoled and had calmed down a bit we were waved over..so we kick standed the bikes and walked over..he introduced us to his dead Platoon mate's father..

Wow! Reminds me of a Easy Rider story where the guy disappeared in a puff of a cloud. Great story,i thought it was kind of low down too at first, but that was probably the only way that car was going to get saved, when push came to shove for pops. How many times digging that foxhole or in the shit did we talk about our girls, cars and dreams of getting out of this crap and back to enjoying the real world. A lady in back of my house had a 73 Chevelle S3 like new with no miles on it in her garage,i asked her about it and sadly her son just bought it brand new but never returned from there to enjoy it either. Rest in peace my veteran brothers.

Amazing year for Corvette. My pop had a red convertible LS-6 with the M-22 manual trans. He was lucky to find the car with the fiberglass hardtop. He also scored as the original owner maintained all the paperwork over the years. His corvette was on of the 188. Sadly, there was a misprint on the block that coded it as an LS-5. He spent years and time attempting to get GM to open the archives to prove the internal components of the block were in fact LS-6..........But Gm was stingy with the records. As I recall, it had something to do with the strike at the Bowling Green plant in 1970.

I had a boss back in the 80s who had a 67 vette with a 427. he raced a buddy of his with a new 70 with the 454. he said after blowing by him when they started racing he then looked into his mirrors and saw he was pulled over on the side of the hi-way smoking like a bastard. he got off at the next exit and went back around to see what happened. his buddy said he tried keeping up,but that 427 just kicked the living snot out of the 454 he ended up throwing a rod, blowing a head gasket , pulled the 454 and swapped it out for a 427! lol! ☆☆☆

Those 427s were monsters I had a 69 with 390 that ran great. I can only imagine what the higher compression cars would do

LT-1 was the way to go in the early 70's w/a Vette, preferably a ZR1. Small Block FTW! BTW, this car could have been upgraded to a ZR2.

I had a LT-1 .Thought i had bough a 350 hp . Turned out , it was only a 255 hp. Ran like the dog it was . LT-1 had as i found out 5 different HP rating . Better know the engine codes real good . I got taken .!!

If you had 255 H.P., you had a '72. The compression was way down making this the only solid lifter 'Vette you could order with A/C.

I know this is an old post but why would you choose an LT-1 over an LS6? I mean...unless you just want the slower car out of the two. Especially the '71...down a whopping 40 horsepower from 1970 (LT-1 that is). It was either LS6 or, if you were lucky enough to get a ZR2 with a factory race-built L88, but th drivability wasn't too great with those. A '70 LT-1 couldn't even get out of the 14's. They were stout for a small block because of the high compression and solid cam, but they weren't even close to being in the same league with the top big blocks of that era.

Those cars were dealer built , not COPOs . You couldn't even buy a LS7 full engine assembly from Chevrolet , only the parts to build one .

No LS6 available in 1970 Corvette. Biggest engine available was 390 hp 454.

I would rather have a 1970 Chevelle SS 454 with the LS-6 rated at 450 hp but with higher compression than the LS-6 shown here from 1971.
