These TV commercials for Roman Meal bread date to the early to mid 1970s, promoting the "light brown bread with natural whole grain goodness". Roman Meal bread is still sold today. It is baked with whole wheat, whole rye, flaxseed, wheat germ, honey, and malted barley. According to the ads, the entire whole wheat kernel is preserved in the process.
Roman Meal Company was founded in Tacoma, Washington in 1912 and focused on whole-grain products, including bread, hot cereal, and snack bars. The company was founded on the principles that Canadian physician Robert Jackson believed to have been the components of the healthful regimen of Roman soldiers. The trademark is now owned by Flowers Foods.

In the 1950's - 60's Mom always packed our lunches with egg salad and peanut butter sandwiches on Roman Meal. I can close my eyes and easily recall the flavor of that unique bread.

I'm likely younger than most commenting here (20s), but I still recall that even in the early 2010s that bread being possibly the best I've ever eaten (at least from a store brand). DARN GOOD STUFF. I'm not surprised at all to see they've been loved for decades.

He does, doesn't he? A roomful of aspiring actors auditioned these lines. Eventually, this man was chosen for his superior ability to hide his pretense. That, or he's the inventor of Roman Meal bread and truly believes what he's saying.

I remember this product. 3 hours after first eating it I couldn't sneeze with confidence. More fiber than bailing twine. Right up there with buckwheat pancakes or a breakfast of Rusketts. Seems like Roman meal did a better job of getting sunny Jim peanut butter off the roof of your mouth too.

If you're a fan of Roman Meal Bread, look for Nickles Light 35 bread. To me it tastes very similar although the texture is a bit different. It's also a significantly lower carb option for those wanting to lose weight on a keto diet or help control diabetes.

I think the Nickles light 35 contains chicory root fiber as a filler to keep calorie count low? It’s a decent bread but who knows about its nutritional content with that filler. Their Navarre bakery plant is only 15 min from my house!

This was some of the most misleading advertising I ever saw. It fooled my family when we got Roman Meal Bread, only to find that the "natural" ingredients the late Clint Ritchie (from "One Life to Live") spoke of here were but a fraction of the whole roster of ingredients, which also included sugar (more sugar than honey), enriched white flour (again, more white than wheat, rye or bran), and Calcium Propionate as a preservative. Also misleading was the orange-tinted wrapper the bread came in, which made it look darker brown on the grocery shelf that it really was; it was just a shade below white bread. And it didn't taste that different, either. If you want honest-to-goodness whole-grain wheat, rye or bran bread, get it at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's - and be sure to check the fine print on the wrapper!

In the early1970s no one ate "healthy", the foods back then were just healthy. .....Then there was the hydrogenated era, and the GMOs, and "diet" foods. ..so now we get cancer, and heart disease, but the alzheimer's and dementia keep us from remembering why.
@erickrobertson7089
@erickrobertson7089 2 жыл бұрын
What a good observation. Heart disease was a relatively unknown disease until the advent of margarine. At one time we all ate organic and processed foods were a luxury. Now it's the other way around.

"press X for doubt"...don't be fooled by the rose-tint childhood nostalgia buddy ! The 70s were the era of industrialization of food everywhere, it was getting less and less healthy..."enriched flour", extra-gluten added to help panification, "flavorings",... Especially in bread, where I live (France), the seventies were the decade of the "industrial white loaves" that nearly killed our baguette artisans. It was getting so much out of hand the government had to take a decree in the early 1990s to save traditional bread, forbidding most additives and mandating bread sold in boulangeries had to be made on premises.
