@albertbatfinder5240
@albertbatfinder5240 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can take off either of the back wheels, but not both!! I’ve done it. I took off the passenger-side rear wheel because I wasn’t entirely confident and I figured less weight on the free-floating side would be safer for a first try. Also interesting is the rear fender which is attached by just one bolt. A wheel-nut sized bolt so you can take them off in 30 seconds with the wheel wrench. There’s no rear wheel arch, so changing a back tyre would be tricky otherwise. While we’re at it... you don’t have to Jack up the car. You set the ride height to maximum, put a prop under the chassis corner, and lower the ride-height. The wheel in question automatically lifts off the ground. Quite magical.

@@AbdullahBasit24 There was always something. You never felt totally secure on a country drive. And good mechanics were getting scarce. By the end, to only things older than citroen cars were citroen mechanics. There was also rust, the silent killer of many cars before the 1980s.

Growing up in the 60s, my parents owned a small restaurant. One of their customers was very proud of his (new at the time) Citroen. I recall he gave us a similar demonstration, as we all watched. He even showed us how he could use the suspension system to change a tire without a jack. Needless to say, he received a round of applause and few chuckles. Good times.

@@crabbyhayes1076 - Aww, drat! I was hoping you’d met my dad. Before I was born, when Mon and Dad lived in Queens, and after I was born when we lived in Brooklyn, they were both doing well financially and sold their powder-blue VW bug and bought a powder-blue Citroën-something … I don’t know what model, but we had it a long time, and from my dim recollection it sure looked like a DS. Anywho, whenever Mom or Dad would start it up, the neighborhood children would gather around to, as my mom put it, “watch it rise up on its hind legs!” And she’s also told me there was a Moroccan food restaurant nearby where my dad would forever be showing off their Citroën, neither of my parents being car people but both being francophiles (they met in Paris) and big fans of modernity, Kennedy, the space age, the ‘64 World’s Fair, all of that. Oh well, it was a long shot, but I figured: how many Citroën cars could there have been in the USA? Thanks for the reply, cool about Paul Goldsmith, I send fond regards to your part of Illinois!

@algrayson8965
@algrayson8965 4 жыл бұрын
@@netmatrix75 - The hydraulic suspension is not expensive to maintain until the car is old and everything is worn out and rubber parts are deteriorated from age and heat. The greatest killer of old Citroëns, besides crashes, is rust. They were made back when rustproofing was very much ignored. The frame boxes were barely painted inside. Spray-on undercoating cracked after a few years. Capillary action drew water, in the winter salt water, against the metal, causing severe corrosion. The way the skeleton frames were assembled, with hundreds of lap joints spot welded, as well drew water into the joints. If the accumulators ("spheres") are repressurized before the diaphragm is torn or punctured, they will last for a very long time. And the fluids should be changed on schedule. Many old "LHS" cars were damaged by not changing the (DOT3 brake) fluid annually. The best I could find was Castrol LMA (Low Moisture Absorption), which has a different label now. The reservoir is open to the air, allowing the fluid to absorb water. Failure to change the fluid results in corrosion of the steel and aluminum parts in the system. Also, in the USA mechanics ignorant of the cars poured oil or antifreeze in the reservoir. The later LHM (a special hydraulic oil similar to MIL-H-5606) cars suffer from failure to change the hydraulic fluid every two years, pouring brake fluid in the reservoir, pouring antifreeze in the reservoir. Ignorant mechanics would pour 80W-90 GL-5 oil in the transmissions, damaging the brass synchronizer rings, instead of the correct oil, 75W-80 GL-4, which leads to slow synchronization and nasty crunching noises. I had to buy a 5 gallon pail of 75W-80 but now I see it on the shelf in auto parts stores. In manual shift cars the driver can compensate by shifting more slowly but in hydraulic shift cars the shifting speed doesn't compensate for weak synchronization. As the engines have cast iron blocks, iron (meehanite) sleeves and aluminum cylinder heads, changing the coolant every two years is essential. At least these cars were made when copper/brass radiators and heater cores were the usual! Note: I have 3 SM radiators and one DS/ID crossflow radiator for factory air conditioning prepped cars. I had a full set of A/C parts with the two condensers, one on each side of the front end, below the bumper, and an A/C bellhousing and compressor bracket but burglars stole them, most likely to sell for scrap to buy meth.

For a European car it is a very large example. These cars were very desirable even back then. This is a fine looking automobile and to find one that is in very good running order is rare these days. This was a real revolution in design when they came out. And for as large as they were they would scoot on down the road very fast and they were very stable on any kind of road surface because of it's suspension. I got to drive one when I was seventeen and the car was a brand new 71 model. I really put it through it's paces that afternoon for about 2 hours.

To change a tire in the rain is a torture. To have to do it in a downpour is worse. In the 60s had to do it and was lucky enough to be in my dad’s Cirreon. Stop. Park. Quick trip to the trunk. Grab the jack-stand. Attach it to the slot in side of undercarriage. Back inside. Move the suspension lever and marvel at the car jacking itself up. Grab the spare and tool from the trunk. Pull the big cotter pin from single central nut holding the tire to the axel. Spinner off. Remove/replace nut and tire. Tighten nut, replace cotter pin. Throw it all back in the trunk. Change suspension lever and car side goes back to ground. Put that in trunk. Return to drivers seat. Drive away. Takes longer to list than do. Loved that car. Still do.

Not really, the second gen C5 also had Hydractive as an option. The production of C5 X7 ceased in 2017, so there's that.Too bad the C5 X7 wasn't available as a 5-door liftback.

For some reason, just yesterday, I had this weird dream that a car like this pulled up in front of my house with a bunch of rough-looking characters in it; I wanted to ask them about it, but they didn't look particularly friendly. It was odd, given that you almost never see these cars on American roads. It would be an excellent car for a gangster movie, with its strange, retro-yet-futuristic look and its unusual moves.

still, the car can be driven as soon as the engine starts. It will get up as you drive away. The hydraulic shift will work very quickly while the big red "STOP" light is still on. The only time the manual height control lever is needed to be moved is for tire changing and lifting the car to prevent "high-centering" (dragging bottom on humpy driveways). The normal clearance of the bottom of the car is 150 mm (6").

Had a BX, then a Xantia, raising the suspension was very useful when we had floods. (Though the Xantias air intake needed modifying.)

Very obsolete. Space-wasting inline mid-engine that sticks back into the cabin. Wouldn't pass safety or emissions standards. Very underpowered for its weight and engine size. Construction from many bits and pieces spot-welded together is tedious and expensive. Flat side windows are very dated. Even updated few would buy it.

@@marcosmoreno4049 ...and it's easier to change a flat tire without any fatigue. You can drive safely Ds on 3 wheels because of its Hydraulic Suspension. There are many videos on KZfaq, you can see. Even with two flat tires, you can brake and keep control on the car. Just because of Hydraulic Suspensions.
