I converted my 1969 chevelle from all around drum to disc/drum. I got a new stainless steel line kit, a new master cylinder, a new combination/proportioning valve (from master power brakes) , new hoses , new calipers, and new wheel cylinders. The valve I got came with the necessary flare nut (although NOT stainless steel) to adapt the rear line. I had to cut the rear line and re-flare it with the new nut. The whole setup came out looking pretty good and performs great. Good info, good video

Did you keep the distribution block on the frame rail when you installed the new proportioning valve? Or did you get rid of it? I have same car and recently did an upgrade but think im missing this step as my brakes now are worse than the drums
@Nova.1971 Жыл бұрын
@@jeffdillard3201 The new set up comes with the new proportional block that mounts to the master cylinder. You need to remove the old block and use the new one as it splits the flow correctly to the rear drums and front discs. Have you got your brake warning light hooked up also? How did you bleed the system? Mine work fine.
@rustedhorsepower5132 Жыл бұрын
@@jeffdillard3201 oh no, you need to change the block / valve. The front drum/rear drum proportioning valve is calibrated for quicker pressure to override drum spring tension, while the front disc/rear drum valve actually slows the front disc to prevent lock up. I wasnt a fan of having the valve right under my master cylinder, so i modified the prebent kit to put the new front disc/rear drum valve on the frame, the same as the old front drum/rear drum valve location. Even if you were to go to a frt disc/ rear disc, you'd need a valve for that setup. Beware where you buy your valve, and what threads it uses. I believe mine came from master power brakes, and came with a flare nut(line nut) threaded to the rear port. I didnt know why, until i found out the rear port was metric, M14x1.5. So...i had to again modify my new prebent kit by cutting the flare on the rear line, swapping the threaded nut, and re flaring it,...not fun on stainless steel. So if you can....avoid metric threads. The electrical connector on the valve was also different. But once the car was fully converted to front disc, stopping was like night and day. So was steering and suspension as that was all redone at the same time. I hope this helps.

Back in 1976 I swapped my 68 Camaro to front discs from a 72 Monte Carlo. Never changed the valve, didn't know any better. That car never had power brakes. I remember the pedal felt different after the swap. I had to push hard, and the car slowed down pretty good.
@Nova.19712 жыл бұрын
Ya they make that valve differently for power drum or disk brakes up front and different for four wheel disk options as they do for non peer brakes.

Yes you’re correct this is made to fit a wide range of GM vehicles so you don’t get every adapter. Thanks for pointing that out and watching.
@reevesautomotivefarm96142 жыл бұрын
the first pick is a distubution block for 4 wheel drums they did not have a propotioning valve like front disk rear drums. proportioning valves are used to drop the rear brake preasure or the rear drums would lock up. drums work on way less preasure than disc. That said looks like you are doing a great job on your Nova. Had mine for 32 years now, still doing upgrades, LOL

The part about the original block.... The picture in your book IS correct. MC lines go to the top of the block. Front brake line to the front end,,,, rear brake line out the back end.

So two adapters are needed. Do you have any references for where to get them? I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm asking to help anyone else who needs to do these part replacements to have a better set of brakes, and give them something to help them get it done relatively quick.

Ok, bled all 4 wheels. Truck stops & pedal is hard. Two lights are on; ABS & BRAKE. I'm so tempted to push on that valve under the black rubber cap. It'll probably squirt brake fluid in my eye!
