The 7th meeting of the season, and I went to 5 of them, Stoke knocked Man U out of both cups despite Man U being drawn at home in both cups. Even as a Stoke fan I have to say that George Best was the greatest player I ever saw live, lucky to have sees him in his prime.

I've watched 1000s of matches but I think this is the first time I've ever seen a centre-half (Buchan) take corners.

Vinny Samways what a classy centre-half Martin Buchan was.

I watch all these uploads just to see him. He loved the feinted shot followed by the brief push to the right then shoot. Again and again he did it.

scherben There's some great football in this game in particular, good effort considering the pitch.

Tavy@ george best still had the skill here to be the greatest player in the world. But as i watched the game i noticed again he was becoming lazy. He could still do amazing things with the ball like hitting a 50 yard pass with both feet right onto his team mates toe with out his team mate moving an inch. And the crowd loved all this, even both set of fans. But he was getting lazy and the george best from 3 years before would be running to take corner kicks and shys, but in the last 8 month and longer george was happy to let some one else do it. Plus you can see he is putting a bit of weight on. Becouse this isnt the same george best we saw in 1969 when he tore rapid vienna apart single handidly. A thinck here george can see he isnt going to win any major cups again and at only 26 years old. I had no idea how good george was when i watched the 1968 european cup final between man utd and benfica. As in the whole match then extra time! My mate said to me watch it all becouse george just tears them to bits while there constanly kicking him all night, then he just takes the piss out of them with his socks at his anckles, even pele, eusebio, maradona, cruyff and all the rest couldnt do what best did to them that night. If it was today benfica would have ended up with 5 players on the park. George just took the ball for a walk and himself, it was as if he was playing in a school play ground lol

He seemed ok to me, he had changed a lot since the European Cup win & he strolled around doing just enough & joy to see these great long passes that Beckham would emulate.

The decline is beginning to show here. Sporadic involvement. Top speeds acceleration waning to fly through players & mis & hit passes. This link shows the level Best should have been at around 27/28. Which he wasn't. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j9efhsl1tci4mmw.html

@seltaeb yes your right. I noticed best didnt seem as fast maybe, but he was still the greatest player in the world after the european cup win in 68. But i also noticed he started to stroll about more and at times not even get the ball for 15 minutes, thats what i saw watching him in a game in 1970 at old trafford. But he was still brilliant to watch when he had the ball, and alot of his goals were breath taking, scoring from really hard tight angles and with alot of power. But here when he goes to beat a player he looks a bit unsure and panicky? That was never the george best two years before or a year even when in 1971 he was playing the best football of his life, the amount of brilliant goals he scored from january to december, in that year alone they did play stoke about 7 times and george scored at least 5 goals past gordon banks, but it was how great they were, he made banks look really bad on 4 of those goals, he had him on the mud crawling around as best sent him the wrong way twice that i saw. Then i saw two others, when george beat his marker who tried to trip best in the box but best rode it but some how his balance kept him on his feet and as he rode the tackle some how in the same movement while a bit off balance from 7 yards out but to banks right side at the end of the six yard box george just hit it so hard it went into the roof of the net with his left foot and banks had no chance, he didnt expect it. Its one of my favourite goals. Then the famous goal at windsor park when against england best clipped the ball over banks head as he threw it into play? To kick it up field. Then they both chased after it but best got to it to head it in. Banks waved no goal no goal, so if banks already knew that then why did he chase after best like a mad man while trying to pull him back wich was a foul? Becouse banks knew it really was a goal and he blunderd. That year alone best made pele look like an average player. Best always made all the best keepers in england look average and at times really daft, he did it to big pat jennings loads of times and peter bonneti and the liverpool keeper at least 5 times in two seasons, and gary sprake of leeds, he did it to all of them in the old first division, plus thats not counting when banks played with leister city as well.

Tavy@ at the end of the 1971,72 season george best knew it was all over for him as a man utd player! Unless the board at old trafford signend at least 7 brilliant players for man utd. And i say brilliant not good, becouse good wouldnt have been good enough! And it was hard for best to take at still only 25, but 26 years old in 4 weeks! It was so cruel for a player as naturaly gifted as George Best was to then watch the team disappear right infront of him. Pat crerand said "And its not just one or two changes at the same time its six and seven when a great team stays together for a long period of time. And george is a very clever guy so he would have seen this coming before most people and it really did kill him. Becouse he was just age 15 when he joinend the club he was still a kid, still growing up as they say. Sir matt busby would say to georges landlady "give him bigger steaks and more potatoes he needs to put on more weight hes to skinny" and he was right, george was really scarily skinny and i thought hes going to get snapped in two a mean thats how skinny he was, we had to try and protect him from big 13 stone full backs. Tbh i didnt thinck george would last that long becouse he was still only about 5ft and 4 inches in height and about 6 to 7 stone in weight, am not kidding here. He was age 15 and 4 months. I said to some one "but hes got great skill and control and pace, once hes by you he leaves you for dead. Wich was true. And he could do it on any wing, but it was his height and weight that worried us. Denis law said he should grow at least another 5 inches in 2 years and put on at least 2 stone, becouse he has to run around the shower to get wet lol but denis wasnt kidding on. We thought on his debut once he got crunchend a few times he would maybe go quiet, as so many great young players do. But i told george to take it and give it back and they will respect you for it. I didnt need to becouse they couldnt catch him lol as at 17 years and 7 months old george best had grew to 5ft9 and weighed 9 stone and was solid. And brave, he wasnt tall but he wasnt small either and he was the perfect weight for the way he played and we beat burnley that day 5-1 and george scored a brilliant goal and the rest was history"

Charlton & Law also had past their best, still good to watch, Leeds would be the same come '76, only clever Liverpool & Bob Paisely, not Shanks but Paisley throughout his Liverpool tennure going right back to the 1960s Liverpool team would bring players in replacing older players but holding on to players like Tommy Smith & others, they signed unknowns knowing what they would bring. No player was to big not to be shown the door & it hurt them but Paisley knew it was the only way to stay at the top. After the 'Boot Room' came to an end that Liverpool way ended as did the trophies.

GREENHOFF!! Oops, silly me not yet. The early start of stupid kids running onto pitch which in 2yrs became yobs disrupting games & wholesale violence & damage, cue fences, cue 100+ Liverpool dead. From this basic event. Such is life.
