Glad to see you’re back on the Torino. If you want to wake that 400 up some more for cheap, swap the timing set out for a set for a 1970 351 Cleveland. All 351M and 400 car motors had a timing set that retarded the camshaft 8 degrees. They did that for emissions. But it hurt the power output also
@Vile-Flesh
@Vile-Flesh Жыл бұрын
That is very, very interesting. The 400 is so underrated and such a good engine. I drove one from 1997 to 2007 everyday with an Edelbrock dual plane intake and Holley 600 vacuum secondary 4bbl carb . Still have the car and the 400 but EVERYTHING is so worn out.

@BlackLabGarage
@BlackLabGarage Жыл бұрын
@@PatandDoopypoopy Well Dalton @PoleBarnGarage isn't wrong. The 400 is a good engine but it is limited by it's open chamber heads and low compression. The pistons are way down in the hole like a Ford 360 is. The 460 is a better designed engine with more potential. I'm doing the same thing. I'm replacing my 400 with a 460. More power and better fuel mileage. I have Summits version of the 268H cam in my 400 and it's ok but the stock cam with a straight up timing set pulled better from idle to 2000 rpms or so. With his 3:25 gear he is better off to stay with the stock cam and just put a straight up timing set on it.
@PatandDoopypoopy
@PatandDoopypoopy Жыл бұрын
@BlackLabGarage Yes agreed. I wasn't comparing to the very superior 429 460 engine. Built several. My simple failed point wS the 400 really responds to cam and good chain. Hindsight I shoulda quietly moved along. And the 8.1 comp is great for 87 gas. Tighten up the cam lsa helps cranking comp.

The 400/351M probably get the most hate of any of the old Ford V8’s… that one sounds pretty good. I know simply swapping out the timing set in them for a performance one makes a big difference

I know you're not too fond of the ol 400 but with an off the shelf cam whether you go with an "RV" grind or a light street cam, some headers, and work the heads just a touch, she'll really wake up with what you've already done. You'd need at least a 600 carb on there, a 750 would be better if you tuned it to sip the fuel until you push your foot through the floor. That's what I did with mine and it absolutely shreds my tires if I get into it. It also just sounds great which is half the fun. They do also like a little more compression. It's just a big 351C, taller deck height and I think we all know that Clevelands are most gooder than a lot of stuff out there. Absolutely love the car. Most gooder, most gooder.

I bought a 1973 Gran Torino Sport back in 1976. Same color blue with blue lazer stripe, white vinyl top. Great driving car, 351C 2V so not a lot of power, but I really enjoyed it. In the 80's I swapped the block for a four bolt main, 4V closed chamber heads, four barrel and hooker headers. Wow what a difference. Now I have a '73 Mach 1. 4V closed chamber heads are a lot harder to find these days!

I had a twin to this car, same drivetrain, FMX, factory 3.25 Traction Lok...... it would come around on a wet road and kill you, demanded respect from your right foot..... at 190,000 miles( I was the I-don't- know-what multiple owner of this thing) the #4 plug looked a little funny....... when I finally broke the car down and sold it for parts, I found a cracked #4 cylinder wall, and it had apparently been that way for thousands of miles..... never affected the running of it in any way.

I have been enjoying the videos on the Torino. My mother who is deceased had one like this but red when she was a teenager. I only have two photos of it from the side and the rear in backgrounds of old photos. She used to tell me she'd chase guys around the town circuit with her 351 Cleveland. Before I was born, she supposedly caught my dad with another woman in a bar and chased him with it. He jumped behind some bushes and she ended up in a drainage ditch totaling it. True story (what I was told anyways 😂). But makes me think of my mom. Thanks Dalton.

It must just be me but the ultimate carburetor is a Holley 650 Spreadbore: small primaries give good economy and very snappy throttle response due to high air velocity and getting smacked in the ass when you stomp on those back barrels. And yes, he really looks up to you.

It's a 72 fastback torino. I used a cloyes double roller chain. 4degree advanced on all cams. No headers. Simple dual exhaust. But headers would of added for sure. Made big gain on my 351 clevelands. They aren't terrible but they were never designed to be a performance engine. They were made to be relatively fuel efficient, reliable, and emissions friendly. They did that very well. The same basic cam, intake, carb warm up on a 460 would blow the 400 away, and bolts in the same spot 🤷

I like the way you work. I am thinking about buying an old Jeep but I do not have the skill set of you nor I dont have a place to work on it. Keep up the content I will keep watching!

Don’t take this too seriously because I love my father if I was to pick a new dad you would be it! And I got 20 years on you buddy but the way you interact with your son it’s beautiful!

To your comment on the guys hootin about 4.11 gears, a few years back I swapped a 3.55 in place of I think a 2.96 in an F150, I loved the acceleration and all, but it didn’t like 70mph, I couldn’t imagine anything taller than that in a daily

Turned into a nice ride. One thing about a ford 9" opposed to a Chevy rearend. Pulling the whole assembly beats changing gears in a GM. JD the junior mechanic is coming along just fine. Needed that idler arm too.
