Boxing historian the late Bert Randolph Sugar ranked this in the top 5 of the greatest fights he had ever seen. He said you could practically hear the punches whistling as they were being thrown (or launched) by both boxers. Bert recalled that the straight right that Lyle connected on in the 1st round literally lifted Foreman off the canvas about two inches. He was incredulous that Foreman survived it. A tribute to Foremans toughness.

The difference between a really good fighter and a really great fighter is the ability to get off the deck and come back and win. Foreman proved himself to be an all time great here. He got hurt really bad, was put on the floor twice, and mustered the courage to put Lyle away. I can't say I ever saw Tyson do that - ever. Tyson was great if he could physically dominate his opponent, but if the guy was strong enough to hang in there and offer real resistance, Tyson was in big trouble.

That's something almost no Tyson fan can ever admit. If someone was able to resist Tyson's barrage in the first couple rounds he couldn't hang in there and he could never take what he dished out. I see something new every time I watch this fight. How Big George got up after getting KTF Down by the Lyle perfectly timed right hand, with Foreman's face on the canvas...I have no idea how he got up. Although there were key moments where they left themselves open and just brawling - Ultimately it was Foreman who disciplined himself with some technique towards the end to get back on top. It was years and years of training that allowed him to do that while his brain was scrambled from that last Lyle onslaught. Boys and girls, you don't see this in the heavyweights anymore. :) Wow.

But kept on coming. A little over a year earlier Ali clipped George with one solid right and down he went...for good. Some would say it was the heat. That George had punched himself out vs Ali. It's just puzzling. The Ali right came with a fraction of the force of Lyle's punches.

Take nothing away from Ron Lyle -- that was George Foreman he was fighting and he went toe to toe with this fighter. At any time this could have gone either way. Both fighters were excellent, tough and Lyle was heavyweight champ material. He should be equally applauded. On any given night Lyle could have destroyed the best. Tyson would have had problems with a man like Lyle. He dropped Foreman how many times? You just never knew when this man was going to go because he kept coming back with accurate powerful punches. I think it was more of a matter of who got tired first. Both men were unbelievable.

What this fight really shows is how much heart Foreman had when not at his best...knocked down twice against a real hard puncher and clearly out of sorts, he somehow gets up to win..a sign of true greatness..you can compare this fight with Tyson v Buster Douglas..the difference being that Tyson also not at his best doesn't get up...

***** I'm beginning to agree with the theory that it takes one great champion to inspire the development of younger fighters. Ali, like JOE LOUIS before him, was one of those figures. The heavyweight division has been in a slump since the Tyson days but the Middle and Welterweights have always been more energetic and popular. What has hurt the sport is the lack of FREE TV coverage. When Ali was active, many of his Title defenses were on nation wide television. These days just about every title defense is on Pay-Per-View and that can get pricey! Ali's "promos" were legendary and so were his fights; but people also had the chance to either cheer or jeer him. And if a fight was on "closed circuit", it would be broadcast on Free TV within a couple of weeks. These days, who is there? Maywether? Pacman? Great fighters but I think their popularity would have been double or triple what it is if we had seen their careers develop in our living rooms!
@pulsarstargrave2569 жыл бұрын
***** I'm not as well versed in the Fight Business so I can't say either way. I just know that The NFL, NBA and NASCAR are major sports and they don't resort to Pay Per Views! (Lord, help us if some nimrod ever proposes that the Super Bowl should be PPV!) TV ads pay the bills and if Pettis can go on a Wheaties box, I don't see why Pacman and Mayweather can't! I think both boxing and MMA need to stop drinking the PPV kool aid and go back to the basics. They could still use the PPV option for major Title bouts but they shouldn't be the norm!

I tend to agree. Except here he got to talking (as he'd do, "vs. Kenny Norton, in Caracas, Venezuela in 1973..."), as already impressive action was taking place, and a shift occurred and missed entirely because of it that George had Lyle in trouble for a bit, lots of punches thrown between them, but George maybe about to take Lyle to the mat, THEN he goes nuts as it proceeds to happen, as if it came out of NOWHERE. Someone less verbose for this one would have an opportunity to call the incredible back and forth with the proper economy to have us all on our feet the whole while (well, the fight already did that, my bad). Nobody's perfect. He gets his Mulligan (smile).

As a boxing crazed teen, I was in Vegas and heard Ron Lyle was working security at the Dunes in the 80's. My buddies and I went in and it was him on the casino floor. We wanted to say hi but were underage. He wasn't having it and was just focused on why there's these punk kids around the gaming tables. He was hollering to get out without even acknowledging us as fans. We left and moved over to the other side of the casino. He re-appeared and started running after us, literally chasing us. I thought it was a scare-tactic, but he maintained his run all the way to the door. Petrified, we ran out of the Dunes onto Las Vegas Blvd and back to our room at the Tropicana.

I don't think he made much money during his career (at least not the millions that guys make today). Back then the purses were much smaller. He probably made some big money when he fought Ali for the title and fought Foreman, but outside of a few fights, I don't think he made a lot of money. Plus, he had some legal problems here and there. And him being an ex-con probably didn't help him find additional employment. I remember watching this fight live on a Saturday afternoon. You almost had a sense of danger when Foreman entered the ring during this era, that you were about to see power so overwhelming that someone could be seriously hurt. I have a friend who was a cameraman for the Frazier fight in Jamaica who said the sound of Foreman's punches was like someone hitting and smashing pumpkins with a baseball bat, and that he was literally sickened by the beating Joe took in that fight. This was a slugfest to the death. In the end, Foreman just had too much physical strength. Like Norton said in the commentary..."This is a real heavyweight fight Howard...Total guts here and power".
@kelvinkloud6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for friend info. He indeed blew the great Frazier up bad. Probably just considering basic blunt impact power, foreman may have hit harder then anyone. Max Baer matches that or is very close. Shavers, Tyson, Dempsey all had vicious power but it was a combination of hand speed which created the impact. Not as much blunt torque power that George, max and maybe Liston brought.
