Here I take apart my 1979 XL500s Speedometer and replaced it with one that works.

Blows my mind to see this video - I am frankensteining together two 79 XL500S speedos right now. Very helpful to see someone more knowledgable deal with the speedo - and to see you working on the XL500 in general. I appreciate all the videos, couldn't have been better timed. - Michael

Both the speedometer and odometer on my 79 xl500s do not work. Hoping it is just a wiring issue and not that the gears are ruined. Agree with the general consensus here, your videos are great and extremely helpful! Thank you and keep em coming!!

I separated mine using a dremel and so was able to glue it back together using black silicone sealant

Do you think a cracked lens could be repaired on the Speedo ?

If you can find a spare speedometer with a good lens you can switch them out.

I doubt anyone will see this but I have an issue we're my speedometer won't go past 45mph exact same bike and speedometer I just replaced the cable on it and it works fine up until 45mph then it just stays there and comes back down when I go below 45. Do I just have to replace it or is there something that can be done

You need a new one. Probably weak magnets inside.

Brilliant video. I've just imported a 1979 xl 500s from America over to England, lovely condition bike, unfortunately the speedo is missing, can't get them for love or money over here. Anyone interested in selling their spare one's, or any bits left over from repairs . I'll pay a good price and pay postage. Thanks

My speedometer doesn’t go below 20/25 mph but works fine above that. Do I need a new cable?

Not the cable. Just wondering if the mph is off by 20. If it’s off by 20, your needle moved.

@@WeekendHobbyMechanic I was riding off road and then I guess it moved and it doesn’t go below 20 even when the bike is parked. Is there any way to fix this?

Does the needle move when the bike starts to move? If so the needle moved. You have to split the speedometer apart and pull the needle off. Add a bit of Loctite and place it back in the right position. (O mph).
