I test drove one from a used car lot back when it was about a year old. Also silver, it had a 305 Chevy/auto. Not great on straight line, but still handled better than anything I’d driven at that point in my car enthusiast life. I still would have bought it if I had the money, but I didn’t. A cousin had a 305 4 barrel Camaro of around the same year and we got 115 mph out it one afternoon, at least according to the speedo. Great video.

I knew a kid in high school that had a brand new 81 Turbo Trans am, not his first, he wrecked an 80 Turbo pace car, yeah, his old man was rich, any way he let me drive it one day and I was not going to be happy unless I got all 3 boost lights on the back of the hood scoop lit up, let me tell you it took a long time to get there, but I did, the car was an absolute stone, so I can only imagine what the 301 4 barrel is not capable of!, I personally don't understand why people are paying stupid money for these, they built so many of them, but if you're going to get one it needs to have a Pontiac 400 and a 4 speed!

Because the 400/4 speed cars are through the roof now. I bought one (in 1999) before they were all the rage. Now since the 400 cars are out of range, people go to the next thing in line which are the 301 cars.

The 301NA in the 1980-1981 had the W designation in the VIN and the 1981 was dubbed 301EC Both of them were the HO versions of the 301 V8 For instance, the 301EC is referred to as "high performance" in the official GM service manual for the 1981 TA equipped with the 301NA. Little information is available nor was it publicized by GM in order not to piss off the 1981 Corvette buyers.

Steve, did this car have the WS-6 Performance Package? Those wider "snowflake" wheels are part of that package. Also, faster steering, harder suspension bushings, firmer shocks, bigger anti-roll bars, stiffer springs and ... four-wheel disc brakes. As for the T-tops; all they do is weaken the unit body, generate squeaks and allow water into the car ... Firebirds and Camaros are better off without them.

The 11th digit of the VIN will be an "N" if it was made in Norwood, OH and an "L" if it was assembled in Van Nuys, CA. The VN cars had paint trouble more so than the Norwood cars due to the water based paint used at VN.
@michaelmchugh2923
@michaelmchugh2923 2 жыл бұрын
@@googleusergp I just looked 11th digit is an N. So I have a yearone catalog, it gives some info. According to this catalog my car is one of 2866. 305 4spd solid roof, black on black. Do you happen to know how many were black? Also my car says limited edition on the door handles. Do you know anything about that?
@googleusergp
@googleusergp 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmchugh2923 If it's a Y84 (Black Special Edition), it should have "Y84" on the cowl tag under the hood. Most Norwood cars that were Y84 Black SE cars had that stamped on the tag (not all, but a better chance on a Norwood car).A 305 powered "Chevyiac" Trans Am may be "rare", but it's hardly desirable, unfortunately. Those door insert decals/appliques sound aftermarket. You want to see Y84 on the cowl tag, sales invoice or Pontiac Historical Society report. Without that, it's merely a black 305 equipped Trans Am. You could get a Y84 without T-tops, but they were rare. But without Y84 on the paperwork, you don't have an SE.
@michaelmchugh2923
@michaelmchugh2923 2 жыл бұрын
@@googleusergp so I can see a WS4 on that cowl tag. The outside door handles are the only place it says limited edition. But the car dose has chrome or stainless steel window trim. I'm thinking one out of 2866 that's black on black would be more desirable then cars in its class.
@googleusergp
@googleusergp 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmchugh2923 The WS4 means that it's a Trans Am (which can also be confirmed by the "W" in the VIN). The chrome trim (if it's the thick style trim) is likely the RPO code "D85" Decor Package. Nothing special there. No, being a "Chevyiac" detracts from its value, sorry. Not desirable at all, unfortunately. Not to say it's not a nice car. The trim tag has items that only concerned with Fisher Body as they were a separate division of GM and only cared about what they had to worry about. Post the rest of the cowl tag. No worries about the numbers there, those are not the VIN #s or anything like that. The VIN is something like 1G2AW87H*BN123456. That's 1G2 for US made Pontiac, A for manual seat belts, W for Trans Am, 87 for two door coupe, H for 305 V8 with four barrel, Chevrolet produced, aka RPO code "LG4", * is a random check digit, B for 1981 model year, N for Norwood, OH assembly and 123456 is a hypothetical production sequence. Those door handle inserts were added from someone that shopped the J.C. Whitney catalog. The only way it's "worth anything" is if it's a Y84 T-top delete. You need to find the build sheet, get the PHS report on it or, have paperwork such as the sales order or window sticker to prove that. Otherwise it's just a 1981 black Trans Am with a wheezy 305 small block. Yes, I know the Pontiac V8s weren't power houses in 1981 either, but you want a Pontiac with a Pontiac engine, not a Pontiac with a Chevrolet engine, aka a "Chevyiac".

Close, 1973 and up shaker scoops were not functional. It was an emission and supposedly noise issue for them to be functional. We got the tag, we can brag: 80 for 1980 model year, 09A for the first week of September 1979 production, 2FS87 for Pontiac Firebird, L for Van Nuys (Los Angeles), CA assembly, 74B for Carmine Deluxe hobnail interior trim, 15L and 15U for Platinum upper and lower exterior paint, W for water based paint technology (which was what Van Nuys used back then due to air pollution regulations), A51 for bucket seats. Can't make out the last code next to the processing number on the last line. Van Nuys trim tags were less informative than their Norwood, OH counterparts. We got the VIN, we win: 2 for Pontiac, W for Trans Am (correct), 87 for two door plain back coupe, W for 301 V8 with four barrel, Pontiac produced, aka RPO code "L37", A for 1980 model year, L for Van Nuys, CA assembly and the rest is the production sequence. I spot RPO K30 cruise control, C60 AC, N33 tilt wheel, AU3 power locks, C49 rear defogger. That's not correct about the tail pipe splitters. The 301 and 301 turbo of that year all came with them. There is no RPO code on the build sheet to denote the splitter exhaust. No, those are not the original keys. The original keys did not have the plastic cover. Those are replacement keys. 1980 keys are coded C for the ignition and D for the doors, 1979 was A for ignition and B for the doors. Those codes (along with others) rotated every four years. Strattec (part of Briggs and Stratton) made the keys and locks for GM and many other car makers. The fuel filler door appears to have been replaced as 1980 and 1979 did not have a bird decal in most cases. That's usually a 1981 thing. No, that's a repaint inside the trunk as the jacking instructions and aluminum wheel warning decals are missing. Those are available reproduction from Osborn Reproductions among other places online. There were about 22,254 Turbo 301s made for 1980 (I own one of the 5,753 that were hardtops and turbo. My parents bought it brand new). The 5th wheel was swapped out as 1980 would have had a space saver spare originally. Both the 301 VIN "W" and 301 VIN "T" were carbureted. Both had an M4ME Rochester Quadrajet four barrel. The turbo was "complex" for the time because it was a new concept and only used from 1980-1981. Overall, pretty good presentation, but a few facts needed some more details. LOL.

It's certainly a beautiful car, and I love the fact that it is all original, including the FIFTEEN INCH wheels. But the 1979-1981 Trans Ams (and Firebirds in general) are the worst looking and least desirable of all the second generation models. What was GM thinking when they put that horrible front end on it? If it were mine, I would convert it to the '77-'78 front end, even though that would ruin the originality of it. One really cool thing about these cars is that they can now be insured and registered as collector cars, which means no more emissions tests, and you can now put as much power under the hood as you want (Just keep it carbureted. NEVER put a computer engine in a classic car) As for Mustangs, Ford ended the Mustang in 1979, and when the next "Mustang" arrived in 2005, it was a computer car. Not something I would want.
@grand73am
@grand73am Жыл бұрын
A lot of people disagree with your opinion on the styling. GM was probably thinking they want to sell more Trans Ams. And they were right...since with the new nose in 1979 they sold over 117,000 Trans Ams, more than any other year in history. And that was with only a limited supply of Pontiac 400's left, so the vast majority had the Olds 403 by necessity. Excellent showing for the 2nd gen platform that was 10 years old at that point. 2nd place was the 78 with about 93,300 sold, so the 79's far outsold any other year. And a lot of people still desire them, like me. I like 77-78's, but I liked the new nose better, along with the better looking tail lights, so I prefer and own 79's.
