This video is in response to a previous video ( • 1981 Honda CB750K cams... ) that I did some time ago where I was only asking some people if the adjustment made any difference since I could not hear a difference before and after. At that time, I omitted to loosen the top bolt.
The title of the original video was misleading and it implied that it was the actual how-to, which it was not. After reading some comments I decided to do a new video showing the step-by-step procedures to accomplish the adjustment of the camshaft chain/tensioner.
To adjust the chain, you need to loosen one (1) screw/bolt and two (2) nut caps. The screw/bolt is in the front of the cylinder block. The nut caps are in the back of the block. Here is the link to FLICKR with static pictures showing their location: www.flickr.com/gp/27219978@N0....
Tools needed:
-10mm socket and wrench for the front screw/bolt.
-14mm open end wrench for the nut securing the front screw/bolt.
-10mm wrench for the back nut caps. (NOTE: I recommend getting a gear wrench to make it easier to loosen/tighten the nut caps).
Instructions:
CAUTION: The engine block and exhaust will get very hot. The back nut caps are a little difficult to reach so be careful not to burn yourself.
-Remove the headlight, tail light, turn light fuses to reduce drain on the battery while moto is in idle.
-Start the moto and allow to warm up to normal temperature.
-Adjust RPM if needed.
NOTE: DO NOT fully unscrew the screw/bolt or nut caps.
-At idle rpm, slightly loosen the front nut first using a 14mm wrench. Then, loosen then screw/bolt using a 10mm socket.
-At idle, unscrew the upper and lower nut caps at the back using a 10mm wrench (gear wrench recommended).
-The chain will self adjust by the tensioners pushing on the chain after you loosen it.
-Slightly blip the throttle to make sure tensioner stretches the camshaft chain.
-At idle, tighten the upper and lower 10mm nut caps at the back of the block.
-At idle, tighten the 14mm nut first then the 10mm screw/bolt.
Adjust RPM if needed (1000rpm +/ 100) or as desired.
-Re-install fuses (if previously removed).
-Done. Enjoy.

Great video. My bike is the 76 400/4. I believe it has only the adjuster at the front. Would like to know if is the same procedure( idle first, loose the screw nut at the back, increase a little bit the idle and then tighten the nut again). I have this bike for 12 years now, and never find a mechanic wanting to deal with it. I live in South America). So I am afraid to messing things up . Any tips and tricks are welcome! Thanks!

DO NOT follow the video on here where the guy takes the side cover and the valve cover off. That is all wrong and confusing. Honda made the tensioners to self adjust and even my 1968 CL350 does this. This is only complicated if you make it so. Easy routine maintenance. I have done this on my 1982 CB900C by warming up the bike for 1min. Turning it off. Loosen all three lock bolts, start it back up for 10sec. Turn it off. Tighten (do not over tighten) bolts. DONE, no hot hands and works great. Great vid by the way. So many people damage their bikes doing this wrong.. Also this is something you want to do before adjusting valve clearance or setting the timing. RIDE SAFE and never wear rubber gloves working around hot things. lol

Are you talking about my video? I did not take the side covers or valve cover off. I like your idea of loosening the bolts with the engine off, though, to prevent the engine from getting that hot. The way I did it is the way listed in the maintenance manual I have. I see a reason why you want to keep the engine running. The tensioner is just a spring lever. When the moto is running in idle it keeps the chain stretched a little more. When you turn the engine off the tensioner may retract just a little and give back some of the tension. Regardless, I will agree that I will be better than no routine adjustment at all.

@@AeroRamer not your vid another where he removes the stuff mentioned > just about to do this and was glad i checked out yout tube a lil deeper this is easier way > my question is what if you do this procedure and it doesn't work . what are you replacing the tentioner and or chain and or spring and or all three >?

rharha2112 I am not a certified mechanic so I will not say I know the answer. I will think that if the adjustment does not work the chain will be so stretched that you will notice something is wrong. Perhaps more noisy than what you now is normal for you. At that point the chain may come off the gear and break something. I would look at replacing the chain in that case. Thanks for watching and for the comment.

how is cam chain tension going to affect the valve clearances?

I can see you taking out the fuse for the headlight if it takes a few hours to adjust the cam chain, 3 bolts.

So basically you just have to loosen them and tighten them again? no adjustments needed?

What is the rattle noise near the end, sounds like a machine gun, is that normal?

The sound in the video sound kind of different from what you hear next to the bike but the bike has always sound the same. Can't really say is it is normal. It is to me.

I would do it when you think it is starting to listen differently. I don’t think my CB needed it much. I get bored sometimes and start tinkering with stuff.

Enjoy ed the video but Must say i could t see the adjust er at the back, totally dark. I didnt understand untightening the one on the front first, then untightening the 2 at the back of the cylinder., then tightening the 2 at the back up again, Why not just undo the front, & tight en the the two back ones without untightening Them, then finally lock it All of at the front. My wuestion is do the 2 at the back have too be rekeased. Before tightening up. For some Reason? Waiting for your reply mate..

Follow this link for a video on a CB550 that is similar to the CB750 (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f92gfLaSy-C-n6M.html). It shows the bolt on the back side.

For more explanation on the tightening/untightening think about it this way. The internal part is a curved piece that wants to be naturally straight. when you untighten both screws at the same time it takes the chain slack away from both ends. Once the curve piece cannot stretch the chain any more that is when you tighten the screws. That is why the moto needs to be at least in idle; to help you keep the chain stretched until you can tighten the screws.

I just wish people would use the proper terminology and stop calling the NUT a BOLT! This isn't the only video guilty of this misnomer.
