This video shows how to properly adjust the cam chain tension and valve clearances on the Honda CB350F, CB400F, CB500K, CB550, CB750 family of motorcycle engines. Cam chain and valve adjustment is the first step in the regular engine tune-up process; this adjustment must be performed every 1500 miles (2400 km) along side an oil change and ignition timing. The cam chain should be adjusted prior to the valves to ensure proper camshaft placement. Learning the skills to be able to perform your own 1,500 mile (2,400 km) is crucial if you own any vintage motorcycle and it what makes these vintage Honda motorcycles so reliable.

Great, underrated video. Watched a few others to try and do the cam chain on my 750 and this was the most detailed by far. Thank you!!

These are absolutely great videos. Takes me back to when I was a mechanic and these bikes were cheap used bikes everywhere. Thank you for sharing the skills and knowledge of these 40-50 year old machines that will likely outlast the plastic junk of today that might outperform these old things with a blink of an eye, but will they be around in 50 years like these old things?

they will definitely out last the junk plastic motors of today... i still haven't seen a plastic engine on a motorcycle but maybe im looking at the wrong brands.

Great video -- The service manual for my '77 CB400F states that the engine should be running at 1200 rpm when you loosen the cam chain lock + adjustment bolt, then you can tighten them (while the engine is still running at 1200 rpm). My '77 CB750F manual says run the engine at 900-1100 rpm when doing this adjustment. Why do you adjust the cam chain tension with the engine off? Thanks!

Hey I have a question. I just finished rebuilding my 1980 cb750k a little over a month ago. I am now seeing some oil coming out of one on the spark plugs after the engine has been running for a while. The smoke from the oil burning on the engine is what brought this to my attention. Could that be from a bad valve cover gasket or bad valve seals. I've already received my new gasket and 16 new seals. But I don't want to dive into the seals if I don't have to. The bike starts and runs great. No exhaust smoke. Any ideas?

I have a 1979 cb750f and I believe the valves were bent when the timing chain slipped. I am wanting to remove the head without pulling the engine from the frame, to replace valves or do a valve job. Do you know if that is possible? My guess is the head bolts are too long to allow clearance to pull it.

Great video, thank you. Do you happen to know the proper clearances for a 1979 cb750F. I know the F model valves are bigger, and Possibly a tighter fit? Any advice would great!

Very nice explanation. Thank you. I thinking of buying a CB350 Four and noticed the kickstarter compression seems a little flabby, as in very little pushback. Is this common or could there be an issue with valve clearance as you describe? It may be a little hard to do a complete compression check on the bike. Hopefully I'll be able to get a compression gauge on it and dribble some oil in the spark plug holes to verify rings or valves. Are these notoriously loose motors? The starter doesn't work and the bike won't start. Carbs are dripping which may contribute to flooding as it sits. Thanks

Good luck with the 350...did you get it? Yrs ago, I had a Trail 70 that wouldn't start...relative lack of compression. I brought it to JAF Motors in Schenectady...the problem was NO CLEARANCE on the exhaust valve! Gee, when I got it home, it fired right up, and it was a tiger after that! It was probably making another 2 horsepower! It's amazing how a few thousands of an inch can make that kind of a difference! But you have to solve your carb issues too!

No, the CB500T is a very different bike in the same family as the CB450 and CL450. Check out our playlist for those videos, we have a video on how to do the valve adjustment for the CB500T there.
