The date was January 17, 1981 at the Showboat Lanes, in Las Vegas, NV. In the championship game, two of my all time favorites were featured. Earl Anthony, who qualified 3rd, knock off his first two opponents to meet Mark Roth for the championship. In a fairly close match, then went to the end, Roth prevailed 253-220 to capture the $21,000 first prize, the largest of his career up to that time. They even mention it but listen for how loud Roth's footsteps are in his approach. He was on fire carrying everything. Hope you enjoy the match. wow! i would watch this match over and over...2 great bowlers: one with a classic, nice and easy style and the other, dynamic and powerful. awesome!

I forgot how dead the pins were back then. The change in lane conditions and equipment over the last 28 years is incredible. If Mark Roth threw that shot on today's lanes with todays balls, he'd average 240, and pins would be coming back to the foul line.

I just started learning how to bowl seriously back in late august and Roth is the guy I should mimic when bowling (He used to bowl in leagues) because I was more of a power bowler. I'm not 100% there and I still need to get more accurate but actually watching him bowl is already helping. If I can just get the accuracy to hit the same spot every time then I would be good. This guy was a beast.

same for me; used to play in a league on saturday morning (early 70's - used to leave the house when HR Puffenstuff was coming on lol) and then love to come home and watch these guys.

This is awesome. My favorite 2 bowlers of all time as well, although I do love Pete Weber as well. I was 14 when this match took place, but I remember watching anytime either of these guys bowled because my family liked bowling so much that we watched often.

Lest we forget: These were the days of NO reactive resin or particle balls like we have today. These guys had to rely on pure finesse and a great amount of bowling prowess. Roth and Anthony were the BEST of an era long ago! If both of them (Earl sadly passed away) were around today...they would still rock bowling alleys down to their foundations! Roth is still hammering down pins to this very day! These guys had CLASS, rather than the "bigmouth-know-it-all's' at local alleys.

The game has changed so much. Roth was a cranker in his day, but today guys put so many more revs on the ball it's ridiculous.

Great point about why they even mike the bowlers. One of the THREE commentators (too many as it is) is always talking when a bowler might speak, and you never get to hear what they say.

@apodino Thanks - so I was right about 80! :) This is such a great post for so many reasons. I live nearby Riviera Lanes which used to be home to the Firestone TOC. Earl and Mark and their styles of course, but balls, pins, and broadcasting styles have all been commented on comparing them to today. I also wanted to point out lanes 59-60 as being quite unique. Unfortunately, many great houses faced the wrecking ball and there just aren't many left with more than 24 lanes anymore. What a house!

MY FRIEND YOU SAID IT RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!thank you.... for me as a kid it was Saturday morning cartoons and straight to Saturday afternoon PBA! from cereal and toasting with Scobby do and josie and the pussycats to hamburgers and french fries with the classy PBA commentators! Awesome memories here!

I can see why Earl is the greatest in the Bowling world. Even in the 1997 vids of him he still has that amazing solid delivery. O_O; I hope to get that consistency with my bowling eventually. XD

Imagine putting all that force and effort into your shot to get maximum revs and you're ball only hooks like 3 boards, haha. Anyway, Roth was the man, RIP

@Nelvin78 Earl would surprise you. His practice sessions were something to behold. He would take 2 coke bottles and separate them by 1/2-3/4 of a board on each side. He would have roughly a gap of 1 board separation and shoot between the bottles. Once on TV he as he threw a shot he said "1/4 board off" and he wrapped a 7 pin. Bo Burton was like WTF?? Thats how accurate that man was. He was around for the reactive transition, He did gravitate inside of 5 and won some senior titles

@theartofsnipe I was just commenting on how big the house was. There had to be 80 or so lanes there to have the finals on 59-60. There aren't that many houses that big anymore.

@FlaRaider - I agree that the old lacquered wood lanes combined with the polyester bowling balls made consistency and accuracy a premium, since the ball didn't have the friction to bounce back and create area. On the other hand, since there weren't crazy ball cores or coverstocks, ball reaction was a lot more predictable, and adjustments on the lane were much smaller. Overall, I think today's game can be just as challenging as it was 30 years ago - it's just become more complex.

The Forum Bowl in Grand Prairie TX was the 1 north texas stop the PBA had each year when I was watching every Saturday afternoon lanes 39-40 were the lanes used and my favorite memory was when Bob Benoit bowled his 300 there and although I know his was the 5th 300 done I believe his was the 1st 300 that won a PBA tour title that center has 60 lanes and two other AMF centers here have at least 40 lanes.

@jukeboxwiz The showboat actually had 108 lanes. 1-80 were in one room, and in another part was 81-108. Unfortunately the showboat faced the wrecking ball some time ago, but there was a ton of PBA history in that center.

I don't know of any house today where you can the have finals on lanes 59 and 60. High tournament average was 219 so ball movement and pin carry couldn't have been THAT easy due to the oil pattern.

Personally I find bowling and golf 10x more difficult than football or baseball and I've played all 4 for a few years now... It's not easy when you have nobody to rely on.

I'm a very novice bowler. Has there been any changes to the game since this match? The only thing I know is I see more 2 handed bowlers.

Well, I don't know about that. It's certainly up there; but I'd consider the pitching position in baseball (whose job it is to outsmart 9 different men) to be the hardest "mind game" in sports.

@jukeboxwiz Here in Worcester, Mass. We had Lincoln lanes...56 lanes most in the state face the wrecking ball in 1988. Auburn 10 pin has 50 lanes but other than that not many houses of over 25 lanes. Imagine Saturday's...Chris Shenkel first followed by Jim McKay's wide world of sports, will never see great days or 2 great sports hosts like that again unless we dump political correctness or the fluff you see on ESPN.

Hey Wolfman, calm down! Okay, it's 4 years later and you might be calm now, but why the vulgarity? You're above that! With all the great bowling stuff you post of bowling when it was legit you should know some non-bowlers won't enjoy it without the cosmic lights and music videos. Hope all is well with you, and please watch the blood pressure... there's alot more bowling videos to post!

and to think, Roth got that kind of bend with a PLASTIC ball.. a hard spare ball in today's game.. He made people duck and run for cover when he came onto the scene. Him and Petraglia spelled the end of the strokers like Anthony and Dave Davis... and yeah, Bo and Chris.. miss these days.
