The 200 and 240 Ds were primarily built for the taxi market, where reliability, not top speed, is key.

Motorweek tested a 1983 240d with a 4-speed stick. It did 0-60 in about 25 seconds. The 4-speed auto probably did the same 0-60 in about 30 seconds. These cars were dangerously slow but very reliable!

I had a 230e petrol , great car , so well made , you could feel the quality. Also quite fast , 136bhp Great car , I think the best car ever made

I pulled a 83 manual 240d out of a garage. changed the plastic prefilter, aired the tires up and it went 80 the whole way home, sometimes 90. 75k miles on it, 10 years since last start.

I did 156km/h with my old -83 240D, that's 97mph on a flat road with 3 passengers.

Good speed video on your 240D, I was curious if this model could cruise at 70mph on the flat highway. I like the idea of owning one of these as a daily/weekly driver but need it to go 70mph comfortably for the roads around my NE TX region.

Hm. My Citroen 2CV with 602cc would do around 75 if pushed. 80mph would have seemed quite quick to me in those days. Beautiful, elegant car, though. These old Mercs age really well. I’m surprised nobody is making battery conversion kits for them. There seem to be plenty around.

Nowadays navigtion systems dont even come close to the old farmer buggy unit navigation system. Once youve slapped your horse 100 years ago..it knew exactly how to reach home even without any lights, electricity, satelite network etc... no comparison at all.we miss you old horsie...pls come back..

Im not surprised the engine started fine after that low milage but the automatic gearbox has probably been overhauled at least twice in that distance.

There's no reason to mess around with those transmissions. They are bullet proof. Not idiot proof though, I'll say that much.

@@petercollingwood522 The clutches wear out, they refuse to reverse,the seals fail. Oh, I replace the filter and ATF like I do on my 1972 jaguar xj6. Which hasn't failed yet.

Was waren das schöne Autos. Dagegen sind die heutigen Fahrzeuge eine Schande. Sehschlitze anstatt Fenster. Außerdem geschmacklose Linienführung.

240D has the top speed of 145-150 km/h ( cca 90 mp/h ) so this is nothing unusual

Theres deff something wrong with that car. My 1982 240D with auto would max out at 78 MPH long before that thing hit 70 MPH DOWNHILL even. You got worn throttle bushings or somethings not right with the governor in the pump.

Not only is it a naturally aspirated diesel, it's an automatic as well. My God, that's slow, dangerously slow. But love the sound and reliability though, elegance too.

Dude, there is something wrong with your car. My 1983 240d 5spd manual went over 170kph . that's 106+ mph. on flat road I average 120 to 130 kph (so 75 to 85 mph)on the highway with ease.
