You assume the fuel in the tank is water-free which is a mistake. Feed the injection pump with a temp fuel tank with fresh diesel. Change the two fuel filters. Your primer hand pump is letting air into the system just by pumping it which is why you need to replace it with the new model ($20). Verify your glow plugs are lighting. These are very hard to start with no glow. Also, the hand primer pump cannot create anywhere near enough pressure to make the injector lines shoot fuel. You can always assist the lift pump by adding a decent diesel fuel pump inline right before the lift pump. W126's are in lots of Pick-n-Pulls. These OM617 engines are easy to start if you take care of the diesel basics. I own four of these W123's and W126's which all have the OM617 Turbo Diesel engine.

Ummm... you want to crack the injection lines at the injectors and then use the hand pump to purge the air. When you cracked it at the pump you just let air in the lines.

I did just that in the video after insuring diesel was even leaving the injection pump on all lines. I immediately suspected the lift pump was weak and that was proven if you watched to the end.

its a diesel shouldn't have no problem starting it after couple of tries.

Guys, this car has an automatic transmission, and I was really surpised that both of you have complitely fotgotten the basic rule - towing on a rope is forbidden as far as cars with automatic transmission is concerned. Only trailer - to transport a car.

Um - No, there are SOME automatic transmissions (mostly newer European) that can’t be flat towed, but most all can be as long as the transmission is in neutral.

@@MurphysLawGarage The fact is that it is not recommended to tow a car with an automatic transmission (and it is so), because in the "N" ratio, the automatic transmission has no lubrication, so it is easy to damage it. This is the golden rule.

That is only true for transmissions that rely on the torque converter to pump oil to the bearings, most don’t and are bathed by the rotation of the gears - even in Neutral. In these transmissions the torque converter is only used to build pressure for shifting/clutch engagement, when in neutral these parts don’t need lubrication.

@@MurphysLawGarage The only safe way to tow Merc W126 with the rear wheels on the ground is to remove the rear drive shaft from the differential flex disk and tie up the drive shaft. If a car is towed with the rear wheels on the ground the transmission secondary pump will start to rotate the transmission and then engine. If you are going to tow W126 or W123 be prepared to also buy a transmission.

ummm bad idea to use ether on an engine that is 21.5 to 1 compression.

A sniff to ensure it can cough, spin and not have bottom end noise is perfectly fine. In fact, you hear the motor try and run on what little diesel it could lift. People’s fear of ether as a diagnostic aid on diesels is based on ignorance.
