If I could have back just one of the 32 motorcycles I owned over my lifetime, it would be my '86 650 Nighthawk. Just a great all around bike: comfortable, dependable and classic in appearance. Enough power for a highway but best suited for long, country roads. It's been 30 years but when you started yours up, the engine sound was as familiar as if I'd been out for a ride yesterday.

Your comment just sold me on this bike. There's one about an hour and 20 minutes from me. I was planning on taking the course but I saw this bike on marketplace for a good deal. Can't pass it up. I don't think I should wait to get it.
@davidj.7779 Жыл бұрын
@@RodknockRhett Jump on it!! You wont be sorry. Just make sure the frame is aligned. Take a bottle of water along. Splash some on the pavement in front of the bike and roll through it, making sure the front and rear wheels track in the same line. It really is an excellent ride. Thanks for letting me know. Ride safe.

A cold blooded beast, it needs a while to warm up, but suddenly -voom- see you later. Doesn't produce much electricty below 2000 rpm, but loves too rev all the way to red line. In town it's hard to get it out of third gear, meanwhile sixth gear red line will put at warp speed. The cb650sc nighthawk ruled the middleweight class till 1985 and Yamaha's 750 maxim x came along liquid cooled with 5 valves and 92 horsepower

Man, your bike is beautiful! Over 30 years ago my 82. Nighthawk 650CS would literally run away from my buddies brand new 883 Sportster. I loved that bike. I own several bikes but I am currently in the process of resurrecting/customizing a 1985 Nighthawk that was vandalized. It will be mostly stock except for the color. I love these bikes and once you ride it you'll know why! I can't wait to finish it!

I love motorcycles, all kinds of motorcycles. And although I plan to get the collection below a dozen I still have more than a couple dozen. For me, it took riding and having a lot of bikes to appreciate the 83 to '85 Honda CB650SC Nighthawk. I've had three now and my mechanic kept one of them. After 47 years of riding and More than double that many bikes, this 650 remains in the harem. It was hard letting the 700S Nighthawk go, but I kept the CB750 Nighthawk with a small fairing and GIVI bags. At this point I look for Goldilocks bikes not too hot not too cold not too big not too small not too fast not too slow, you get the idea. I've owned 250-300 cc bikes and I would pick this Nighthawk over that 300 every time. 250 cc's are much better on dual purpose and off-road bikes. For the street I like the 450cc class and up. And of course I'm including the Ninja 400, but nothing smaller. And yes I owned three Ninja 250s, as well as four Honda Helix 250.

What'd you end up deciding?
@williamw7043 жыл бұрын
Great bike man! Yours looks great, I picked up a 1983 model with 5,000 miles on it earlier this summer also. Awesome for how low maintenance it is with the shaft drive and self adjusting valves. I've put new springs in the front and nice shocks on the rear. I think the CB300 looks fine, but I'm past my time with the lower CC bikes. I love the 650 because it has the 6th gear so you can cruise on the highway at pretty low RPMs. I think the 300 class gets buzzy at highway speeds. If you're relatively new though, it might be smart to keep the 300 to at least get a year or two of experience. Its really cliche, but I learned so much starting out on a 250cc thumper. I think had I started on a 4 cylinder 650cc would have ended up hurting myself. The modern 650 and CB1000 are really impressive looking and performance wise... tempting but I think I'll stick with the Nighthawk for a while at least. Hope you enjoy either bike you keep.
@AussieAJK3 жыл бұрын
That’s what I ended up doing keeping the 300. I did the MSF course this summer so the 650 was my first bike and when it was running good it felt like a bit much. I’ve got a thousand miles on the 300 I feel ready for something bigger but I don’t regret it, in fact the cb300 is very good in the corners but I am hoping I find another nighthawk 650 or 750 in the near future.

What size and brand rear shocks did you go with? And what size? I was told by the person I got it from that people on forums like this rfy brand and I've been checking them out just don't know what to go for size wise.
@williamw7042 жыл бұрын
@@rj1234100 I went with Progressive 430 Series rear shocks. Theyre the 13 inch version which keeps the geometry the same as stock. Unfortunately my bike threw a rod last week while I was on a road trip 12 hours from home, so it all went to a scrap yard lol! Big loss haha...

@williamw7042 жыл бұрын
@@rj1234100 Yes along with the progressive front forks it made a huge difference to ride quality. The bike felt very stable in turns and much better riding two-up. Knowing now how long that bike didn't last I might have gone with less expensive options. Some forums I see people putting tons of money into these old bikes, but in my opinion it's not worth it unless you know the engine is good.

@salvadordollyparton6668 ай бұрын
if you like the bike... just keep it. jesus. you're not gonna lose money holding on to it a while longer. as long as you keep it in decent shape. it'll maintain that value for a while, maybe go up a bit in years to come. and always good to have 2 bikes. you can set one up for one type of riding, or taking trips or something. not gonna get away with a ton of gear on a 650, but you could through some bags with enough clothes for a few days on it. cause that 300, i highly doubt would be very comfortable for long rides... and you're definitely not getting much on there.

Make sure the ring clamps between the carbs and the engine are tight. A little bit of air seepage there will make it run like shit, won't be able to turn the choke off. After that mine ran better and better the more I drive it. Loves to rev. Blow the doors off any Harley made!

Hey man I know this is late but at 3:46 your saying you don't understand why the previous owner would've taken that cover off to get at the toolbox container, its because there's a cover that goes on said box and has a latch to open and close the container that is easier to access when the cover is off, but not necessary. Bought an 84 nighthawk a month ago and refurbishing to be my first bike, almost finished aside from paint and cosmetics.

you don't think you should keep the second bike, when you have 2 cars, and barely use one? well, i'd start with getting rid of that other one... but then, i'm not scared of a 650 nighthawk... i thought about getting one for just a put around bike, but i think it'd be too slow and boring for that, for me. just having one real bike anyway. wouldn't mind a 750 one day just to cruise around. but that'd be my 6th bike or so in the stable. i mean, the virago is gonna be for my daughter... if i don't get a 650 hawk for her. not nighthawk. i just wish they'd put a chain and disc on the damn things... then they'd be fine. and i don't see where the hell all that weight is. i mean, there are a LOT of liter bikes that weigh less. so again, don't see how anybody could see them as really powerful just for that.

god people get on my nerves with the whole "it's not whatever size" like this is 286cc... seriously? how many bikes EVER are exactly what's advertised? and if it was 300cc, none of you assholes would buy it, cause it has a one of piston that doesn't fit any other bike, or rods, crank, whatever. so, now it's priced out of the class. and like that whole 14cc is EVER gonna make an actually noticeable difference. oh, it's got .15 more horsepower... who cares? and it's not about being "technical" it is a 300... that's the model. period. doesn't matter if the engine is actually only 100cc, the model number is 300. but if you think a 650 nighthawk is "powerful"... and don't really trust yourself with it... i just don't know what to say there, other than if you're that worried why are you out of your bubble in the first place? a nighthawk is not powerful. they're not fast. they're HEAVY, air cooled, drum rear brake, not gonna be fast. even in the 80s when rear drums were more common. might have one of these, and still be quick, but not all. they're not bad bikes, honda has made very few actually bad motorcycles, if even more than one. but a "claimed" 72hp when new, is like 50 at the wheel, and probably even less now... cause... shaft drive... THAT i don't get. all the stupid little shaft drive bikes of the 80s. i have one too.. seems i'm destined to always have one damn yamaha, and i'm stuck with a 535 virago that needs everything, cause it ain't a honda. but that thing is absolutely gutless. not because of the engine, but weight and shaft drive. there should be no sub liter bikes with a shaft drive, at least 800.
