Another classic game by 86 Celtics, this time Bird and co. destroyed the Bucks in Game 1 of 1986 EC Finals series.
Celtic fans began leaving Boston Garden in the third period. By that time Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Dennis Johnson, Danny Ainge and Bill Walton, their heroes, were on the bench watching their substitutes put the finishing touches on a 128-96 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.
128 points overall, 39 assists and 56% shooting with great defense. Basketball poetry.

I agree too. But it's amazing how much difference just a year makes. In 87, the Celtics had to come from 8 down with 5 minutes left in Game 7 to beat the same Bucks team. I guess that's what happens when Wedman is replaced by Dorky Fred Roberts, Walton by super clumsy Greg Kite and no Lenny Bias. Still though, the 87 Celts should've beaten Milwaukee much easier than they did.

Poetry in motion, basketball at its finest there. Those Bucks were a great team but they had few chances, really. Celtics were everywhere, so many offensive threats knowing how to work as a TEAM too, great rebounders, great team defense. You got prime McHale, Parish with his terrific longevity, DJ past his peak but still doing his thing, Walton showing he could still do it for one last time, Ainge coming into his own, Wedman and Sichting on the bench too, then you have peak Larry Bird to lead them... That's game over for the rest of the league. Terry Cummings was a 6'9'', 230 lbs, great athlete full of muscle, and Bird was making him look foolish out there. Walton looking like his pre-injuries self at 3:12.

Who needs to expend tons of energy with a dozen dribble moves, crossovers, and step backs in hopes of breaking ankles? Bird somehow completely freezes his defenders in place with a few well-timed nods and fakes, and then steps by them like traffic cones the instant he sees their weight shift. And he did it to good and great defenders alike, for the better part of a decade.

This Celtics team was definitely awesome. I am a Lakers fan, and was ecstatic that Magic, Kareem and the rest broke the Celtics curse over them in 85. But this season, the Celtics beat them in both regular season games. The Lakers were ousted by the Hakeem, Sampson led Houston Rockets in the Western Conference Championship. Had the Lakers went again to the finals against Boston, I don't think they would've beaten Boston in this one. They were just clicking on all cylinders and pretty much unstoppable.

That must have been such a demoralizing team to try and defend. McHale was probably the best pure low post scorer in history, Parish and a healthy Walton were absolute beasts around the hoop, and, Wedman and Ainge were lethal perimeter threats and Bird could score from anywhere he felt like. Add to that three of the smartest and best passers for their position ever in Bird, Walton and DJ and there is simply no way you can defend this group. If you don't double you'll get made to look foolish, if you do double you'll get made to look foolish, if by chance one of those elite scorers misses you have to deal with an absolutely brutal offensive rebounding group. Jordan/Pippen/Rodman might have been better on defence, but for sheer depth of offensive talent this group was unbelievable. I honestly think they would have fucked up the 92 olympic dream team in a 7 game series.

So smart, from 1-12, and as the years go by here, that IQ, fundamentals, and teamwork, to me, would become more and more difficult to beat. The best basketball ever played in the NBA in my opinion. Bill Walton was a virtuoso basketball player and so was Larry Bird. If Walton had ever been healthy {which he wasn't} I still feel he was the best player of all time. {I realize though you can't say that because he wasn't healthy.} Bird loved Walton you know. So did McHale. They loved him. Loved playing with him. Thought he was a phenomenal person to be around. Jamaal Wilkes who played with Bill at UCLA and later was on that great championship team with Rick Barry at Golden State said playing basketball with Walton was the funnest thing he ever did. They were 40-8 at the All Star break the year AFTER they beat Philadelphia for the Title.............and then Walton hurt the navicular bone in his foot an that was it. Bill Russell lead USF to 60 straight wins while in college. As a professional he won 11 World Championships in 13 seasons something which to this day is unrivaled in athletics. I still have him at #1 or #1A on my all time list {with Michael Jordan.} Wilt Chamberlain was my first basketball hero. {Mickey Mantle was my first sports hero.} Chamberlain was the greatest force the game has ever seen and its most dominant player ever. Wilt is in my all time top five along with Russell, Jordan, Wilt, Kareem, Magic and I'd have to say Lebron {that's six.} I laugh when people say Wilt couldn't dominate like he did in his day. Yes he could. Kareem was just an unbelievable player. He was the most unstoppable offensive force to ever play and his sky hook was the single most devastating weapon in the history of sports.............any sport. I remember Kareem's first game {as Lew Alcindor} at UCLA. He scored 56 points against USC {and Paul Westphal.} Kareem's teams lost a total of two games at UCLA. They won three straight NCAA Titles. Kareem was 7'2" and he could jump {all of those guys Russell, Chamberlain and Jabbar could all really jump along with their size. They were all leapers. Russell was a "quick leaper" too.} Kareem was an absolutely phenomenal player. Remarkable.

Depending on what rules they play by 80's when they called traveling, 3 seconds, palming, high bounce, carry, goal tending ect) or the no rule NBA now will determine if those teams win by 20 or 40 every night.

Well, with art like this, beauty indeed is in the eye of the beholder, and that play starting at 3:08 is the most beautiful execution of basketball I've EVER seen: The late-great DJ starts with a FANTASTIC gutsy save, over to a HEALTHY (yes!) Bill Walton, who pushes it up to the underrated, oft-forgotten Jerry Sichting, who then makes a bullet of a pass to a charging Walton who SLAMS it home like he was still a hippie kid at UCLA!! The 1986 Boston Celtics, one of the greatest teams I ever seen to grace the hardwood. Nobody was gonna beat them and they knew it. The combo of Dennis Johnson, Larry Legend Bird, Kevin McHale, Bill Walton and Robert Parish was just magical and when in top form as you see here, Unbeatable. Bill Walton, Although from California, his dream was to play for the Celtics. The day he called them he got lucky, Larry Legend Bird was there, and it was by Larry Legends Nod, Walton was hired and his dream came true.

The team of the 1980's was the LA Lakers but the best single season team was no doubt the 86 Boston Celtics. I live in California and am surrounded by Lakers fans and to their credit, most of them admit the 86 Celtics were the greatest ever. What a great decade though. Boston, LA, Philadelphia, Detroit, Atlanta, Houston and Milwaukee. If not for the Lakers and Celtics, the Bucks and Rockets probably would have titles of their own from the 80's, especially the Bucks.

The reason the Bucks were getting destroyed in this game is because the Celtics just coasted past the Hawks 4-1 and were relaxing while the Bucks just won a brutal 7 game series against the Sixers with Erving and Barkley and were exhausted. Games 3 and 4 of that series was much much closer at the Mecca, but the Celtics just were too much for the Bucks in the 4th quarter. Bucks had the lead in both of those games until the last few minutes of the game

I agree the 86 Celtics were the best I have seen-the 87 Lakers are #2. As far as the Bulls there many Celtics, Lakers, and 76 teams that were better. The Bulls won a lot of rings but never once faced a great team in the finals only good teams making them appear better than they were. I have seen every NBA final since 1962 and saw many great teams in the 60s, early 70s, and then all of the 80s but have not seen a truly great team since the 80s.
