It's good to see that you have found a successful method that works. I'm always leery of doing paint work over plastic repairs. I watch a guy who calls his channel DIY auto school, and he says that all the strippers have been modified due to environmental regulations, and even the aircraft stripper is not very good now.

This Plastex product is a real eye opener for me. As luck would have it I was looking forward to my next project being an 82 Katana 1000 or gen I GSX-r. The Katana 1000 I scored turned out to be the winner. I've got two rear mud guards and both are cut off. The nearest replacement is in Japan for over $400.00 so I'll be using this video as a tutorial to try to fabricate my own. Thanks.

With the rear fender you’d want to plastic weld it instead. Plastex doesn’t work on polyurethane . If you look at my zx7 videos you can see me fab a rear fender for it

You’ve mentioned a few times in other videos that patience isn’t your strong point. Well, watching this I have to disagree because most of what you were doing was painstaking to me. I’m sure I’m not alone when I say it would just be so much easier to either find good replacements or pass the work to the professionals. Seeing what you have done previously with bodywork and paint I’m sure it’s going to look fantastic when you have finished and it will be a credit to you. I’m really looking forward to seeing the finished job, really hope you stick with the Skoal Bandit plan, and seeing what the new engine turns out be 😀👍

Cheers Chris. It’s a labour of love, I love doing body and paint work, and it’s way cheaper than buying new or paying a pro. My patience is a challenge because I tend to rush into things, if get too far ahead of myself . Sometimes the “think before you act “ advice fails me LOL

@@true-moto-restoIf you do decide to go the Skoal Bandit route the majority seem to have green wheels which is probably period correct. I personally think they look best with gold wheels for the proper racer look; you can find pictures online easily enough. It’s also important to get the correct shades of green, some seem to be too light without enough depth of colour. Obviously you paint your bike just how you like it, that’s what’s important. Just thought I would offer a couple of things to consider 😂👍

@@christyrer9530it will be Skoal bandit, I have the decals already and the paint. Paint has to be colour matched to the decals , and unfortunately , u r correct that some of the green is a bit pastel in colour and would look better a bit richer. However, I can’t deviate from the decal colours or it will look even worse. It is what it is , wheels will be the same green as the tank and upper fairing More difficult is finding a green vinyl to match, so far no luck. May have to go white

My plastic welding looks like I did it blindfolded, I bought the correct rods and used a snap-on gas soldering iron with appropriate attachments but still an abortion… Well worth the effort as the front cowlings are very expensive now.

Practice makes perfect, I’ve never used the gas welder, I’d like on try one, I wonder if they’re hotter and harder to control? Yes, The plastics are very expensive now, and I have also learned from someone who has several 85 and several 86 models that not all the plastics are interchangeable like you’d expect.

Are you going Bandit 1200 engine and harness? Got to be about the same or more hp to the wheel. Very cool if you go that route.

Not sure if you're aware of it, but the baking soda/crazy glue method works amazing for fixing busted fairings. I "tack" the broken piece in place and then completely grind out the crack to about an 1/8 of an inch gap with a demel bit, leaving just the tacks to hold it. Then put a layer of masking tape on the paint side to create a channel. If you have watery glue, fill the channel with baking soda and drip the glue onto it. If your glue is thicker, fill the channel with glue, and sprinkle the baking soda on to it. You need to do this a couple times to get the proper thickness, but it dries fast, is super strong and sands nice too. You can also build up weak areas using the same technique.

Thanks for commenting !!! Yes, Im aware of that method too. I personally prefer the plastic welding and Plastex method for ABS plastic as they both allow for a bit more OEM type flex in the repair area. However the superglue (thin glue) and baking soda, I use for fibreglass repair.
