I actually had three A/D/S amps my car system WAY back in my IASCA days (1988) because they were pure "sound quality" amps, NOT ground pounders...Once you were tired of just shaking and rattling sh!t from a block away (and I was) A/D/S was one the amps you bought when you decided to grow up.👍

a/d/s was always the brand that you went with if you wanted the cleanest sound. I never could afford them, but when you saw them in a car, you knew the owner was serious about sound quality. Thanks for this series Big D!!! You rock my brother!!!!

I had both the PQ10 and PQ20 back in 1990. I sold the PQ10 but still have the PQ20 today. Was still using up till a few years ago.

I actually installed this same model amplifier just a few months ago for an older gentleman that I work with to power his old school Infinity Kappa dome mid-range drivers and old school kicker tweeters... He had a three-way setup with the mid-base drivers and subwoofer being powered by an Eclipse 4ch amp... He had active crossovers and an Eclipse head unit with an AudioControl EQ... The whole thing sounded great once it was dialed in!

I had a ph15 and it was awesome. It was in a Cadillac allante with a alpine controller in the ashtray location and a changer. Also had a/d/s components and some 8 inch sub in a 4th order. It was all installed when the car was new. Sounded awesome.

The only time I ever saw an ads set up back in the day was also the oddest car I ever saw in a sound competition. It was in a ‘73 metallic green four door, vinyl top Oldsmobile Delta 88. It was a professional set up closely guarded by its owner who was wearing a courduroy sport jacket and pants. In the summer, in San Jose Ca, temperatures in the 70’s. He placed but did not win in sq. These were beatiful amps that would have blown our budgets at the time.

I had one in 96 on my rear speakers. Bought it used. It and my Alpine 3555 amp sounded awesome. I paid almost 500 bucks in 92 for that Alpine, saved the whole summer.

I had one of these in a car that I bought in 93. I asked dealer what that was. He tells me to go to car audio dealer. Car audio dealer hypes me up and I walk out with a"custom" box with one Pyle 12. That amp is what got me into car audio. Been loving car audio ever since.

I had a PQ10 a little over 20yrs ago and its efficiency was so low, on warm days I had to remove a trim cover in my car or it'd go into thermal shutdown. When I redid that system I got a P840 that barely got warm (also mounted in another location). The P840 had full crossovers so I ran that setup with no passive crossovers at all.

A/D/S was hands down the cleanest power for car audio in the late 80s-early 90s. I ran two of their PS5 amplifiers (one for front, one for rear). I believe they were $230/each back then. I was labeled an "audiophile" at 20 years old because of this, even though I didn't have the money to buy one of their 4 channel amps and bought the PS5s 4-6 months apart. LOL Beautiful sound with extremely low distortion.

This is GREAT! I had this amp in my '87 Camaro back in the late 80s. It replaced my Linear Power thumpalicious system after the amps were stolen and I sold off my subs. One of the best sounding car amps I had the pleasure of owning and listening to. Thanks Big D for reviewing and testing this lovely amp.

My pq8 was so nice the power was so clean. It ran my 4x6 in the dash. I got all of my ads gear used had subs speakers and amplifiers.

Got a small stack of these.. Maybe someday they'll actually go in a car, or get sold. Just loved their utilitarian looks and simplicity. They were certainly durable. I don't recall anyone ever blowing one up, whereas we were servicing all the American brands constantly. Of course it could be that bassheads weren't running A/D/S amps.

I ran one of these in my rx7 for a few years just running front speakers and a ported sub. Never heard something so impressive for the age and rated power. I still have this amp and a pair of pq20s, and a pair of ps5 amps. I can't seem to get rid of them given how good they are

Nakamichi makes amazing high end products! That’s a good comparison for back in the day. I just purchased a Nakamichi home surround sound system with two rear speakers and a sound bar and a 10” powered sub. It was expensive but It’s legit! 🔊💥

I love my 2 pq10 amps. Best amps for sq. Not good on subs but worlds apart from my soundstream amps as fas as sq for the upper range. I ran mb quart reference separates 6.5 in front. 1 amp bridged per side. 1 ch for the tweets and 1 for the mids. Man it was so nice. The sound was so much deeper with the ads where the S.S. sounded good but everything was on the surface. Idk how to explain it. Just awesome amps for sq.

It seems alot of the higher end vintage amps deliver their juice very similarly. We dont see much of that anymore with the modern stuff and I cant help but feel these older units are far superior to what we get today.

Fact that that thing survived roughly 36 years without any signs of (serious) moisture. Moisture was a issue in cars back then compared to now.

I spotted one of these at a flea market a few years back, knew it instantly, flipped it over and the whole back plate was rust and clear water damage, I passed.

great amps pain to work on . had a pq20 in 1993ish had a soundstream 4 channel amp around he same time i think it sounded better above say 5khz . ran alot of aluminum dome tweeters then so im sure that's why if i ran silk it may have been different . live and learn played with alot of powder in those days (im also a big dummy) that kills your ears high end response lol ... your chanel takes me back often thats what keeps me comming back

That amp looks to be capacitively coupled in some way...perhaps common collector + floating ground like QSC does now adays where the filter caps are part of the speaker outputs. Could surely be due for new caps, which would explain the 40hz anomalies.

I think she is in need of a recap. Given some of the test results and that low freq flub *assuming its not just KZfaq compression, is indicating the caps are sad.

@OldSchoolStereo- A friend of mine, back in the early 90s, had an older brother that worked @ a High End Audio dealer, that sold High Quality Home, and Car audio. Around 1993, my friend had this High End audio dealer, install an A/D/S Power Plate 4ch, im thinking this same amplifier PQ10, or a PDX, im not sure? I know it was 40 x 4 rated though. He had them run the front 2ch's, to a pair of Alpine 4 x 6 Plate's, in a 1989 Camaro Rs. Then he had them bridge ch's 3, and 4, and ran them to (1)-10in JL Audio 10w0, or 10w1, that sat in a custom built sealed enclosure, that fit perfectly in that far rear pocket, with the sub facing upwards. That JL Audio subwoofer, loaded perfectly, off of that horn shaped, rear hatch. I would have picked a 12inch JL, but that shop was convinced, that for Sq, 10s were the best, so they talked my buddy into the 10inch. It could have been because of airspace requirements, but either way, that 10 not only sounded great, but had very surprising output, for 80watts rated, from that ADS PQ10, which you dynoed to actually do around 110watts. Well my long held opinion of these amps has finally been confirmed. I never thought they were worth their asking price be it power output or sound quality. When you pulled the back plate🤮🤮🤮😅 Single sided board ✔️ Wire monster ✔️ As always I appreciate your efforts 👍!!!

Like all stuff from this era, you’re paying 75% nostalgia tax. Worth grabbing on a table at a flea market for a bargain, but anyone that starts asking multiple Benjamins for one…pass. Compare this to the other garbage people were buying in the late 80s and I can see how they built a reputation, but jump forward 3-4 years and even budget equipment surpassed them.

I am not sure an Alpine or Kenwood of the era would have so many jumpers and phenolic. Components chosen to have a good sound and care with shielding (ok, no multi-layer FR4 or G10 PCB with ground planes or noise rejection traces...). Bad efficiency and is no longer working properly. Caps? Well, a Class AB amplifier should be used with a load when the efficiency is no less than 48% or it will heat soak and sound like doo at elevated volume/output. Below say 45% then something is wrong, the load is wrong, or the design is wrong. Just WRONG!

class A/B BJT amps are by there nature have regulated output. the efficiency sucks but no class d has the dampening to control the cone pos like an A/B (Class T and Full bridge Can get very close to A/B if done right full bridge has the added advantage of not requiring output filtering for switching freq since the exact same signal is on both terminals there is no difference in potential that's required to drive a current in the coil. and coils only respond to current as current = magnetic flux and a simple I*R=V and V*I = P(watts) but this is also heat 1W = 3.41btu so the 2500w each one of the sub i have are trying to cool a 8500btu heater coil there are some inductive losses that subtract from coil heat but it's based on tuning and the motor force. in general most large subwoofers are only converting around 10-15% of the input into sound pressure the higher the power for a given cone size the worse this gets and 10-15% is a best case at a fix frequency give it musical range and it's half that the rest of the power is all heat.

The problem you are having getting 10awg connected is that you need to use solid core. Take 1/2" of solid 10awg and solider it to the stranded 10awg and BINGO.

I have an HP audio analyzer, but did you know distortion isn't really an SQ thing....the tube amps many audiophiles love have more distortion than you'd think

@wal2 many of us SQ guys still like to see it..I never said it was a bad thing nor placed It as something we don't want...but if distortion isn't a SQ thing but many SQ channels dedicate there channel to showing distortion like distortion factory on Facebook and RTA for cars....these are just 2 off the top of my head that focus on ....drum roll please..DISTORTION...jk jk..not trying to sound like an asshole ..but I get what you mean... distortion is an audio thing not SQ but it's more on one side then the other.... many SQ guys like me can care less for Watts for its something we will hardly reach... when I set my gains, I don't use a DDM or whatever it's called but I do use a multi meter, math, and ficus on how much power I do want.... bass is a back seat and isn't the focus of my set up unlike spl and distortion plays a huge part in design along with placement and tuning... I just wish distortion would be another segment included in your test but we can't have everything we want and I do appreciate the amps you test ...

@@wal2 I just cancelled my last traditional streaming service: Amazon. I realized the content I enjoy most comes from KZfaq. It would have been tough to convince people 20 years ago that small producers like Big D, Big Clive, LGR, Cleetus, Ginger Billy, etc, would eat the lunch of billion dollar companies. Y'all did it with fan engagement (customer service) and hard work. Thanks again!

Even in the late 80's it was rare to rate amps from 20hz to 20khz like ads did. 1khz is a cheat.

Let's talk about the elephant, looks a lot like Kicker amps. So what was the connection between ADS and Kicker. These companies buy and sell so often one never knows where it starts and where it ends.
