RICKY JOHNSON - "The 1988 CR 250 is the most powerful and balanced Honda powerplant I've ridden to date, it has an electric engine type of power, smooth and pulls you back off your seat, its absolutely awesome..and it sounds incredible...the Japanese boys got it right with this one"....(Testing-March 1987)

RJ was on the Honda payroll, and his job was to win races and sell Honda MX bikes. In reality, (I had this bike), the lower rpm's were on the soft side, but mid range and up it ripped. Overall, it was fast. I never had a hard time getting a good start on that bike. It was the rest of the race that usually was a problem. :)

when i owned an 89, it had poor low end and a bastard of a power band that cut in and sent you rocketing like a mars mission. the 88 in this vid has a heavily modified swing arm for hill climbing. Would never have called mine electric engine type power lol... just gave it the nickname "the bitch"

I had a 87 back in the day. I was 14 and rode the hell out of it til I was 17 and my dad sold it. Now I'm 43 and took up riding again. 2 stroke of course, because....well I have a set of balls between my legs. LOVED my 87 CR 250

I did a ride down in Baja Mexico back in the early 90's with a group of friends. We camped out one night east of Ensenada then rode 125 miles in one day to Mike's Sky Ranch. The next day we did the same route in reverse, and me and one of my friends switched bikes. Him on my 85 xr600r and me on his 88 cr250r. Man that thing was fun. After that I switched with him every chance I got when we did desert trips. He loved my 600 because it was a wheelie king and he could keep the front tire up on it for as long as he wanted to. He died a few years ago from cancer at 48, but me and the other friends that were there still talk about that trip to this day.
@AccuracySpeaks
@AccuracySpeaks 3 жыл бұрын
That's awesome, thanks for the story! Those old Thumper 600's were wheelie kings indeed! My brother had one of the early 80's model XL 600's with dual carbs, RFVC engine, and that thing was impressive! So impressive in fact, in 97 when the XR 650L's came out that year, we each bought one the same day! We were both just expecting the 650's to just be insane in terms of power and wheelie riding torque, but I must admit remembering back on the old XL 600's, we were both a little disappointed with the new 650's, they just didn't have what the old 600's could deliver even with the extra cc's! Being that said, they still ran good, just couldn't bust out the wheelies like the old 600's! Those late 80's 2 strokes were wicked! I had an 89 YZ250WR, and that thing was a beast! My buddy raced it in Wytheville one time years ago, I always knew that bike had a little something more than most in its class because my buddy just ate the whole field up off the holeshot and he was not the best rider in the class. That thing was nasty, especially out of the hole!
@jdatwood7086
@jdatwood7086 3 жыл бұрын
AccuracySpeaks Yes, the WR was a woods/enduro bike so it was geared way low. I raced wytheville many times, used to bomb that massive stepup with my YZ125 to the bar in 5th gear!

My first dirt bike,88 CR 250 R at 14. I asked for CR 80 OR 125. My dad said, "You get a B Honer roll for the whole year, I'll buy you a dirt bike." Failed by 1 point and I gave everything I got trying to get that B honer rolled. My Dad saw how hard i tried and he decided to get me my bike. Blessed my old man soul who really didn't know anything about motorcycle. Since I was 5'8" at 13, he said I should get a 250 because of my size 😁. Originality, 87 CR 250 R would be it but it was all sold out that summer. I had to waited long 6 month when my 88 CR 250 R finally arrived at the Honda dealer. One of my 1st and greatest lesson i learn from my dad. Work hard and you will be rewarded. Especially of that self worth and pride of hard work. BTW, I DID GET A B HONER ROLL FOR THE YEAR the following school year. Miss you Dad. Love you Dad.☝🙏 Anyway, great video. God bless.☝🙏🇺🇸🏁

The motor was no joke. The light feeling of the bike was no joke. The cornering was no joke. But the suspension and straight line stability, (high speed and bumpy ground), was a joke. My 2019 YZ250 2-stroke has a similar power curve, (soft on the bottom but strong in the mid and top), and I think my old 88 CR would smoke it.

Brother I was born in 1974 so I rode the old red devel elsinores, and believe me nothing had the power and shear terror thrilling power band than those old girls, but yes this was a great model. Kind of the last of the classic CR'S. My first bike when I was 10 years old which I bought for myself, working in a butcher shop on weekends, was a CR 125 M1 1974 model and it had a power band like you were on a highway to hell. Long live the great HONDA CR. Rules the wasteland.

Love your guys Channel and a new subscriber to it and have yet to catch your show on discovery. Back in 1999 I bought my cousins husband's 88 CR 250,he was a big CR guy and did race at the time.i had the bike for a couple of years and dam that beast could fly and was in excellent shape and diddrop some money into it well. I'm 50 now and hearing those bikes gives me goosebumps imiss that bike and totally regret selling it.reason i sold it I took a nasty spill on it and shattered my left arm and was off work for 6 months. The 88 was a beautiful bike as all of them as well and love what you guys are doing to keep them classics out there and the time you put in.still love hearing that swarm of bees from the 2 stroke, keep the 2 strokes alive coming from Alberta,canada.

Speed shifting, (hold wide open, fan the clutch and shift), may sound cool. But if you want to get better starts, just let off the gas a bit and hit the next gear with no clutch. You can test it yourself on a moist dirt road. Pick the method with the shortest "coasting patch" on the road between gears. Happy hole shots! :)
