I spoke to a guy about to purchase one in 1999. He sais exactly what Dan Hussey wrote " Too much focus these days on pure speed and numbers, rather than the actual driving experience. .." The Ferrari Testarossa whilst out of "trend" in '99 was still way too expensive. The Mondial Ferrari's were just affordable and quicker than the 308's and a great investment. The Mondial owner turned up and I witnessed them throw the '89 Mondial around. I asked how much the Mondial was being sold for and he said $US50,000 so about $65,000 Australian.

Dan you are totally right. I call it smiles per mile. If you have a high ratio of that, that is all that matters. A few years ago my son bought a 1979 911SC. Although faster than all the previous non-turbo models, it is still not a fast car. Yes, it gets up and goes OK, and handling is terrific. It is a real sports car, or at least, if you want to get technical, a great GT. It is enormously fun to drive--I get driving privileges because I am also my son's mechanic! People will say, "A V6 Camry is faster!", and my response is, So? I could weld a jet engine onto a VW and have the fastest car in the world but I would still have a VW with a freaking jet engine on it. A V6 Camry is an appliance and most will end up in junkyards. People need to actually drive what they yak about instead of looking at tables and charts.

This is my bucket list car, not sure why but I think it’s classical Ferrari, elegant and not brutal like modern designs. I was lucky enough to drive a ‘t’ around a racetrack for four laps and it’s really beautifully balanced, with ‘enough’ performance in real world terms. A joy to drive with that exposed gate, manual gear shift.

I got mine in 1990. It is a 1987 3.2 Cab. Have driven the wheels out of it and still going strong. Never trailed to a club event, I drove from Sebring to Mid-Ohio for a National, drove the Road Atlanta three of our times, drove to Savanah Georgia many times for track events and it was a regular at the Moroso event for many years. It was even taken to Homestead and never let me down. Not a rocket for sure, but I am not or presume of being a fast driver. With my son at the wheel no 348 can touch him. Air still freezing cold. I just replaced the clutch long time ago and installed a new top. Got the real originals floor mats in Modena. Still have the original wheels, but for daily driving I use speedlines with bigger tires. It is '87, but is has anti-lock brakes. I'm planning to keep it until one of my grandkid get to driving age.

I always like the Mondial. And with the T bringing about a longitudinal engine (used in subsequent 348, 355 variants) makes it an underrated car. Having that low slung mid engine purposeful Ferrari architecture combined with greater practicality and understated styling is very appealing.

My dad bought a brand new 1991 Ferrari Mondial in late ‘91...it had only 4 miles on it from the employees moving the car around the indoor showroom over the course of 7-8 months while it was there. I was only 2 years old when he came home with it and my mom was so mad. Granted it’s def not the most expensive model of Ferrari but it’s still a Ferrari and they are very pricey regardless. Especially if they haven’t even been driven off the lot yet at all. Long story short my dad built a 5-car garage (5-bay doors) on my parents 64 Acre property. My dad had always loved cars and already have two beautiful trucks and an old school Mustang GT350 that eventually got totaled before he finished the new garage complex building. As long as I can remember I remember getting in that Ferrari and people ALL over Wilmington area would stop and stare. Once or twice a man almost ran off the road he was trying to look so bad. Every time we were in a grocery store parking lot or at the bank, etc. people would always say they loved the car and how much does a Ferrari cost these days. But even with two people inside (and my dad is 6ft 4in 264 lbs) so that’s some weight in a relatively light car. That thing would HAUL ASS!!! That rear axle gearing, the power to Weight ratio, the big 300-320 HP and strong Tourque were more than enough to throw both of us about 2-3 inches into our leather seats. No cars exhaust system sounds better than a legitimate V8 or V12 from a Ferrari. I mean, I’ve heard Corvettes with 600+ HP and Mustangs with 450+ HP and Lamborghinis with 630+ HP and Maseratis with 525+ HP or 700+ HP even....some may come pretty close but no way they beat out that 300-320 HP V8 with those performance cats, high flow headers, low restriction true dual exhaust that makes the best acceleration sound ever. And that Ferrari of my dads is fast as fuck

It’s been well known all these years why it’s not sought after! It’s not the mechanics, the sound or abilities... it’s the looks. Simply put it doesn’t look all that good. But if you like it, it’s a nice thing since prices haven’t sky rocketed...

Thanks for the video. I owned a 1975 Dino 308GT4, a cousin owned a Mondial QV convertible and a buddy loaned me his Mondial T convertible as well for extended driving use. I like all 3. I really miss my GT4 but traded it in on a Lamborghini Countach 5000QV, so no regrets. The Mondial QV was sublime. On a sunny day, that might be my favorite of them all as with ~230bhp it isn't likely to swing the ass end out as often as the Mondial T was likely to do at low speeds. Honestly, you could be happy with any of them. That 308 and derived engines are just sweet little gems, if not the fastest cars 40+ years later with regard to the GT4. I don't care, they are all events meant to be savored... La Dolce Vita indeed! Salut!

Cost of a major is around $6500 - $7K. The engine needs to be dropped, but it also makes it relatively easy to do cam seals, valve adjustment, etc. and a bunch of other stuff while you are there. The Mondial had 2 achilles heels: 1) the original fuse box apparently likes to "melt down" although I still have the original one in mine... and, 2) the stock alternators are garbage, as I just found out :) But otherwise, for a supercar, these are relatively reliable, friendly, practical and fantastic to drive! I would budget around $2K - $3K for annual maintenance. Not that bad when you consider what a set of rotors and pads costs on a new 7 series. Or tires!
@braintreecat6 жыл бұрын
Only issue is the cost of a complete belt service. These cars used the 348 engine and the motor has to come out to do a proper belt service. Shops will charge @ $7,000 for this whereas pre T models did not require an "engine out" service. For earlier cars the belt service would be $ 4,000. Belt services should be done from 3-5 years to be safe. This car is a great model.

that's actually an urban myth. The example here can do 1/4s high 13s. I don't know any stock Odyssey that can go below 15 sec. Nevermind comparing a car that was first created almost 40 years ago to something today is not exactly an apples to apples comparison, is it?

@@ToyKingWonder The V6 Camry is actually pretty quick. Here is the latest test: 0-60 in 5.8 and 1/4 mile at 14.5 (Motortrend Oct 2017). The Mondial t Coupe hit 5.6 and 1/4 mile in 14.2 (Autocar June 1992) What's impressive though and what "Leo" doesn't get is the Mondial is 3 decades OLDER.

I have never understood the hatred of the Mondial and 400i Ferraris. I feel like people are incredibly prejudice against them or 4 seater v8 or v12 ferraris in general. Of course they're not going to be as fast or as gorgeous as their 2 seat stable mates. They're no slouches though either. They are pretty for what they are a 4 seater Ferrari. I feel like there is a warped perception as to what a ferrari is supposed to be. Most people have it in their minds ferraris are all supposed to be ridiculously fast drop dead gorgeous, people shockers, and they couldn't be more wrong. Ferraris should be a jack of all trades. Hell if not for the Mondial and 400i lots of people would never have been able to realize their dream of owning a Ferrari. So these cars have their place. To bad lots of snobs can't see that.

Actually, the top speed was 158 mph. And, comparing it to a Corvette suggests you must be fairly young. It's a 4 seat mid-engined car and may be the only 4 seat mid-engined car. It's not a sports car, but a sporting daily driver. Some people get it and some don't.
