Paul Page's Delta Force Indy intros are quite possibly the greatest in sports, period. They're mini-movies.

The editing on this particular intro always gives me goosebumps. Why can’t events be introduced like this anymore?

when i go back and watch these Indy 500 intro's with Paul Paige, and the Delta Force music, I get goose bumps and remember some of the best auto racing ever seen in my life time.

Paul Page, Delta force music, and Indy. There's just something great about that

This intro is awesome. It's like the middle of winter right now and I'm pumped for Indy '09. Wish the intros were still like this

On television, maybe. To many of us, a man who died before we were born will always be the Voice of the 500, due to the way our families raised us. As it stands, Page shows here why he deserved the title: he got the AESTHETIC of it all. This wasn't/isn't just a job...presenting The Great Indianapolis 500-Mile Race (his phrasing, 1987 radio broadcast) is a lifetime achievement, and oh how hard is it to live up to. The last two on ABC certainly haven't.

I think that's the only one he doesn't have. I'd like to see that, not because I've seen it already (I wasn't even born!) but because that race formed the basis for the classic racing game by Papyrus.

Paul Page IS and will ALWAYS be the VOICE of the INDY 500! Just like Donald Davidson is the brains of the history of the Indianapolis 500! 'nuf said!

I love these intros. It used to piss me off (still does) when they show the wives of racers, however. I wanna watch the damn race and not some chick cheering or crying.
@VampireYoshi16 жыл бұрын
It was the greatest opening they ever had. The build up, the Meaning, the Power and the GLORY... ...some people have said they got away from Delta Force because it was 80s music. Screw that: THE INDY 500 THEME SONG (its real name...) is friggin' immortal.

I have the abbreviated one that was aired at the start of the race portion of the broadcast, but I don't have the one from the intro of the pre race.

I remember that game. Greatest individual video game race I've ever had was on it, when I was closing like Rick Mears in 1982...in the MARCH-COSWORTH, on the Penske-Chevrolet Marlboro Car #25...thus representing Al Unser, Sr. that year, who "would have been" gunning for his fifth win. Caught him off turn four for the final time, and pulled what would,, many years later, become "a Hornish."

Stinking Emerson was way below the white line! He ran out of room and drove Jr into the wall! He should have been DQ!

Al should've let up and let Emmo by to win, by that logic.

He was on the Radio Network broadcast this year with current Voice of the 500, Mike King. I think I preferred listening to him, actually, especially when he corrected King on the latter's line of "It looks like Helio is certain to win," with "Well yes..........but..." But this...is Indianapolis.

1:18 - Given that they were six laps up on third, this is the ultimate damning testimony upon modern, artificial-parity communist American 'auto racing'. No matter how many passes they force to occur these days, as though the legendary track were merely one giant ping-pong table, it doesn't FEEL like this did, anymore: because we Know the difference. No rev-limiters, no 'aero-penalty' for leading: they were head-to-head, for all the marbles, in a duel on racing's Mount Olympus: with hundreds of millions watching with eyes as wide as dinner plates. And there's only one way to bring it back. ... Not that the current generation will EVER accept such thinking, of course.
@markbrazis54447 жыл бұрын
Actually I agree with you. I hate the ping-pong racing since 2012 with the DW12s. The staged passing with rigged cars is not real racing. 1989 battle was as real as it ever gets.

The part starting at about 0:37 applies very well to this year (2012)'s finish as well...

Had meant the last two announcers, since Page...and even he was something of a cariacature of himself in his later years, as another fan noted. But you're right...I get reminded by ABC of the way Saturday morning cartoon shows present auto racing...explosions, literally-flying upside down cars, and trying to throw wrenches in others' cars at high speed, because it's "Not like people take real motorsports SERIOUSLY, right? Give me a break..."
@VampireYoshi18 жыл бұрын
I submit it was the Greatest Pass of All Time; what it meant, what it stood for, the skill needed, and three passes, inside/outside/inside, inside an eighth of a mile distance.

Does Champcar have 1989 as well? That was the one that forever hooked me, with the Borg-Warner turning in the background.

@ptstephani14 жыл бұрын
No matter what, Indy is the best race. Regardless of the split of Cart/ /IRL, Indy is the most important race of the year, without a challenger. 1989, maybe more than every race run before or since, demonstrates this.

I'd say more than the last 2 years on ABC...while maybe the actual race broadcast is "just" OK, the way the present the Indy 500 has been terrible the past 10 years. They act like its one big ABC commercial, then have these stupid opening themes and bizarre graphics instead of giving the race the dignity it deserves. I went to just my 1st Indy last year and videotaped the coverage...when I got home and watched it I was cringing with that dumb "Gathering Storm" opening they had for it.
