As a Mitsubishi technician that sees both 3000GTs and Stealths on a regular basis for repair...these things are nightmare cars...but the people who own them, love them, and are willing to do anything to keep them on the road...these cars cause some kind of psychosis in their owners...

I remember reading an article back in 94 or 95 in Motor Trend or Car and Driver or something where the compared the 3000gt, the FD rx7, 300zx and the Supra. Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Mazda sent engineering teams along with the car to make sure their cars were running at their best. Toyota sent the car on the back of a flat bed with a few pairs of spare rear wheel/tires. That is confidence in your product.

I couldn’t disagree with this video more! I’ve had a 91 Stealth RT TT that I drive every summer and love for the last 6 years. For a 90’s car it’s incredibly fast and I haven’t to spend more than a $1,000 on the vehicle in the last 6 years. I’m a lucky guy and get to drive a lot of very fun vehicles but my Stealth is my favorite because no one knows what it is, it handles better than most cars of today, it looks great inside and out, and it takes me back to a simpler time.

@alitheretrokid
@alitheretrokid 8 ай бұрын
@@NIVEKFFORHS I've owned 3 3000gt's/Stealths, are they as dead reliable as toyotas/hondas? No. But, their unreliability is often exaggerated because of poor maintenance. The engine block/heads are really strong. Like 450+ hp safely on stock internals. The timing belt/water pump should be done every 60k miles or 10 years, which people dont do then the belt breaks and they blame the car. The ECU capacitors always go out which makes the car runs like shit or not at all, but is like a 1 hour $20 fix for anyone that can solder. 2nd gear synchro's wear out every like 100k miles depending on how hard the cars driven but new synchros are a couple hundred bucks and changing them yourself is possible if you are patient. People perceive them as unreliable because they are 30 year old cars that rarely get the maintenance they need.

Just the other day I just bought a 92' RT/TT Stealth, Not stock but I absolutely love the car. One thing to mention the biggest things to maintain on these cars (3000GT or Stealth) Is the timing belt. If you do not take care of it and replace it when needed, The car will self destruct. So if you're gonna get one, focus on the matience bits and they'll treat you right.

I own a 1991 3000gt vr4 and i have to say all of the things he said are wrong. From the engine power to the engine's fragility to the having to pull the engine out. I'm sorry but these cars are fast as hell. I'm faster than a 2015 Audi S4 and with little mods can keep up with a stock corvette and still corner like no ones business. I rev the crap out of my car and have yet to have a problem. This car was way over priced and is complicated. But you dont have to pull the engine for any reason and can hold 500all wheel hp on stock internals.

I know this is satire, but sorry, those cars were state of the art when they came out. Styled by Dodge's Pacifica design studio, the car was indeed built by Mistu with various shared pieces. Nothing of the time had DOHC, combined with twin intercooled turbos, 4 wheel steering, and AWD with a 6 speed manual. Nothing! And your owner of this car is a complete wuss. Drive it like you stole it! At the time, they ran mid to low 14s in the quarter.. that ain't slow!

This owner has had the car for 17 years, he's likely become a "hypocardriac" from all the bad stories on the forums over this time. I bought my R/T TT around the same time he did and while I found the stories disturbing, it was the unobtainable and unserviceable parts that ultimately made me throw in the towel and sell it, after having lusted for it for 10 years. That and the lack of headroom became really annoying over a short period of time. But yeah, you gotta open up that throttle every so often to keep things working properly. It's not going to make your bottom end bearings or synchros die that much faster... and if you have to be so careful, you never really owned the car, it owned you.

Electronically controlled suspention, electronic sport exhaust, active 4 wheels steering and car alarm with remote control was just a few bits he didn´t mention at all. This car was groundbreaking for its era and time, so yea... it was rightfully expensive. It was better equipped and faster than some Ferraris and most Porsches of that time. I fell for the Stealth TT's after seeing a black 93 used in the 1994 made-for-TV Bandit series which were loosely based on the Burt Reynold's character. Guess GM didn't want to donate any Trans Ams. They did a lot of fast driving, bootleg turns & skidouts (while clearly using the actual 6 cylinder exhaust sound with boost on the soundtrack which is very cool) but only jumped it once. Guess they wanted to keep the shows budget in check and not wreck a 40K car or two repeatedly

@Whitestorm2
@Whitestorm2 6 жыл бұрын
There are many many stereotypes about the reliability of the 3000GT platform that are COMPLETELY wrong. The engine doesn't have to be removed to do exhaust gaskets, or change the turbos, or do vacuum lines (maybe you're thinking of the 300ZX?) In fact, when you compare them with modern cars they're pretty damn easy to work on. If you maintain them, like most other cars, they will last forever and they are NOT fragile. They have a few weak points in the drivetrain when chasing more power but otherwise they are SOLID. Search it on KZfaq, there are many 3000GT's making over 1000hp with a built engine, and many making 500hp+ reliably on stock internals. You can rev to the 7k redline all day and the car will not complain, even 8k is pretty reliable when stock if you just raise the rev limiter. You can throw it into a corner hard and the AWD will keep you planted. Parts are not too hard to find with a few companies and individuals making all the parts you could need. Parts can get pricey but that's because the car is niche and there is not a lot of competition. It seriously drives me crazy on how much misinformation there is out there on these cars EVEN WITH THE PEOPLE THAT OWN THEM!!!

I almost got one of these in high school, my dad and I were returning from Florida in his C5 Z06 cross country and came across a dealer having a hail damage special. This was just after Katrina and all of their cars had severe price cuts due to the hail. My dad knowing hoe much I loved dodges at the time pulled over and we test drove this exact model in dark green. I loved the car, I though it was incredibly fast for what it was and sure wanted to get it but my dad got cold feet thinking I’d hurt myself with all that power. I had nearly forgotten all about this part of the trip, thanks for taking me down memory lane.

Engines on these were not fragile, the bottom ends hold up 500hp with the 1st gen cast crank, 2nd gen forged crank can handle 1000+, the 1st gen transfer case however was prone to breaking with hard launches, a problem they resolved with the 2nd gen. As with any performance car, following the suggested maintenance is key. Also not a DSM, its USDM, Made in Japan, not Normal Illinois, look it up.

Ugh, it was fun to listen to how each car was great in it's time period, or funny, or obnoxious. Now it seems as though something has changed and EVERYTHING sucks and nothing is good. The reviews used to be much better but have lost their soul. Some of the new reviews, I can tell that you are very hard trying to recapture what it was that made them great. However, something has changed.

For the time this was a very high tech and impressive car. In 1991 the Corvette had roughly 50 more horsepower with close to double the displacement and 2 more cylinders. You had to pay $65K to go to a ZR1 if you wanted to go fast. The quality of materials and durability was way superior with Mitsubishi. The weak point on these cars was the premature failure of valve stem seals and oil burning. Otherwise, they were solid. Parts have been drying up for a long time. This guy did a great job of preserving this one. The factory seats in that condition are stunning.

After owning an 09 E60 M5 for 2 years and a 91 Stealth TT for 11.5(still own it currently) I can honestly say that if I had to source a used engine and trans for the Stealth every year it would still be cheaper than the M5 maintenance wise, with that being said it always surprises me when other owners claim their cars are fragile, maybe if they actually maintained them they would have less of an issue with actually driving them. Also in line with the other comments posted here, serious amount of misinformation regarding this platform, starting with the first 5 seconds of the video, I mean at least look at the wiki so you can have close to factual information on the vehicle you are reviewing. I like how the weight gets brought up, which compared to most grand tour cars today isn't that bad, it certainly wasn't great when comparing it to its competition back in the day, but still not as big a deal as people make it out to be considering the competition wasn't exactly miles ahead of it performance wise despite the weight difference. Oh yeah, with a decent exhaust system, it sounds a shit tonne better than the competition, none of that nondescript "import" bassy/fart sound that V6's typically make, its actually quite throaty, even with the cats gutted/downpipe and stock cat back. Fast? Not by today's standards, no, but it certainly held its own in the 90's, my Stealth is BPU which based off the automotive forums and guys who coughed up the coin to dyno the car after installing basically 3 bolt ons(Intake, downpipe, boost controller set to 13-14psi) it makes roughly 400bhp, not great these days but its not like you don't have options for more power at surprisingly affordable prices even today.

I like this vid but I don't think using inflation to compare $ to $ with a modern car is a good comparison like you did with the Kia Stinger. I think that you are underselling how far tech has changed in the almost 30yrs when you do that, not to mention how all tech is far cheaper and more reliable now than it has ever been, like the talk about vacuum lines those would never exist in a modern car let alone one worth $50k. I think showing options that are from the period like mentioning the Toyota's MR2 Turbo or the BMW Z1 makes more sense and for a better comparison.

It's a great comparison, shows how much cheaper cars are nowadays. People complain that cars are expensive now which is dumb.....I mean my wife's $26,000 Accord has leather, navigation, 180HP with 35+ MPG and will deploy side curtain air bags if it feels itself rolling over. All for 26k. That's nuts

I have a '91 and '93 3000GT VR-4. I love those cars. My '93 has 145K on it and runs beautifully, I'm not afraid to lay into it either. The notion of them being fragile isn't the motor or even the trans... it's when you start putting a lot more power into them, you could grenade the transfer cases. People tend to bolt on bigger turbos and such without upgrading other things and destroying the parts that weren't intended to take huge horsepower. If you keep these suckers stock or mild modifications and keep up on regular maintenance, I doubt you'll see many issues (of course, any car that's 20 something years old will have its parts that don't age well, but that's not exclusive to this platform).
