Game 7 of the 1991 World Series needs little intro, but here goes: Jack Morris throws 10 scoreless innings, Gene Larkin knocks in the series winning run in the bottom of the 10th, Twins win the World Series.
This video is the original CBS broadcast with Jack Buck and Tim McCarver, including pre and postgame coverage.

Not a Twins fan but I remember watching the entire '87 WS rooting for the Twins because Kirby Puckett was one of my favorite players EVER, I even emulated his stance and everything. And then I remember this '91 series even better because I was in HS and about to enter semi-pro ball. Those were FUN times, that's all I wanted - baseball was FUN. As soon as it stopped being fun - I stopped playing. But watching the Twins when Kirby was in center field - was ALWAYS FUN. Kirby is straight up one of the greatest players to ever play - who doesn't get that statement made about him enough. He's one of the greatest center fielders to ever play the game on either side of the ball - and THAT'S SAYING SOMETHING. It broke my heart the day he got called up to the club up in the sky. But now he's in the REAL majors - and I bet he's still knocking it out of the park and climbing center field fences to rob home runs from all time greats......sincerely yours From a New York Mets fan who will always LOVE the '87 and '91 Twins because you beat the '87 Cardinals and '91 Braves lol. BTW - smartest thing the Twins did was acquiring Jack Morris - one of the biggest of the "big game pitchers" of the 80s and 90s.

Cool kudos for Kirby! I just finished watching espn 30-30 about the 86 Mets. I was a senior in H.S. that year and rooted for the Mets because one of the few cable stations I had was WOR out of N.Y. and watched them the majority of the season (didn't get Twins games). The Mets sort of became my National League team that year. I remember that Buckner play like yesterday...what a series that was too.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen another 3-2-3 double play turned in any game. It was only possible because Bream, with chronic knee trouble, five previous surgeries, and running with a cumbersome brace on his right knee, was one of the slowest runners in baseball.

Twins fan and native Minnesotan. This series was truly one of a kind and a story book in every way. I can think of no words that can honestly describe what we were all so fortunate to have added to our Major League Baseball legacy in these 7 games. It wouldn't have been possible without this great Braves team whom I have always respected as equally as our great Twins team. To them both: Thank you.

As an old Twins and Minnesota sports fan I treasure games 6&7 of this series because even if a Minnesota team in the last 32 years could have made a championship game how could they live up to these games? Even more than mourning the fact that Minnesota sports have been sub par for so long, I mourn for the NL not having the DH anymore. We’ll never have another game like games 3&4 that set up games 6&7.

Unreal that after this amazing 1991 WS, and also an amazing 1987 WS, that the state of Minnesota did not bring up the creation of a new stadium for the Twins, to the point that they almost got contracted after the 2002 season.

I certainly miss their opening and closing music and montages. Really shows the nobility of the game. Fox is worthless at that. What I DO really like about Fox is their pre and post game crew with Burkhart, A-Rod, Papi, and Hurt. Best possible coverage to mix and match would be CBS’s music and montages, Fox’s pre and post-game shows, and the ‘80’s ABC broadcast crew of Michaels, McCarver, and Palmer.

I like that they didn't have to deal with low temperatures. When I was a kid, WS games were played during the day and earlier in the fall.

My dad always would tell me the greatest games are often 1-0 games. He told me this as a five year old in 1993. I think this was the game why he said that. And now i totally understand why.

In the 5th, when Lemke was on 2nd and Lonnie Smith bunted, Hrbek's foot was still on the bag when he caught the throw but Smith (who foolishly stopped running) was ruled safe.

I forgot the rouser they played over the speakers when the Twins came up in the first inning. Start Me Up by The Rolling Stones. Now that’s a rouser compared to some of the stuff they play today to fire up the crowd which is more akin to a soporific.

I'm a Twins fan but i felt bad for Smoltz. Had he been a seasoned veteran like Morris he might have talked Cox into letting him stay in the game. Bobby Cox made a lot of bad decisions in this game.

Smoltz said that himself, he said later that being as young as he was at the time, he didn’t feel like he had the standing to argue with his manager the way Morris did, which certainly shows his competitive fire, but the truth is it wouldn’t have mattered because he was removed on the second mound visit of the 8th inning, when the manager is required by the rules to remove the pitcher. Once he goes out to the mound when either he or the pitching coach has made a previous visit that inning, as Mazzone had in the 8th, the pitcher is automatically out of the game, so he isn’t allowed to change his mind at that point.

I was in high school for the 87 World Series and in college for 91. Watched every pitch of both. Both years the Twins won all four games in the old dome. Almost unfair.

16:25 Greg Olson, Braves catcher, got a nice ovation from the Twins crowd. Greg was born in Minnesota, and went to the University of Minnesota. He made his MLB debut in 1989 with the Twins, where he played in 3 games in 1989. He then became a free agent after the 1989 season and was signed by the Braves.

The games were definitely better when broadcast on the networks. The FOX games seem like sort of "canned broadcasts." Love Lasorda in the booth for managerial insight. Tonight it's "Johnny Wholestaff" For the trophy!!!! So much better. Now it's the FOX World Series Pregame show. Not a fan. It sucks how so many 90's Champs had my Padres on them. Winfield, McGriff, Shane Mack, Mike Pagliarulo, Joe Carter, the Alomars, Sheffield. So many great players for us to not win ourselves. Kirby was such a good guy. Minnesota should be proud he was theirs. Damn, those were the days when pitchers cowboyed up 10 IP. #RIPKirby

The only World Series to end on a HR was the 1960 WS but it's ranked number 27 by ESPN in ranking of the WS. To this day it's still the only WS game 7 to end on a HR

It's also a joy watching a World Series where the network doesn't try to show all their celebrities pimping their shows. Nobody gives a damn, FOX. Get it right. The 3 networks did it right. Great series.

He was at 126 pitched. Middle of the Braves batting order was due up. Gant, Justice, Bream. He'd have gotten the 11th but that's probably as far as they'd push it

Ear Weaver of the Orioles would always boycott the player introductions after Game 1 of the ALCS and after Game 1 of the World Series. Just one of the teams would be lined up on the field. Weaver rocked.

Pat Olsen was an entrepreneur that started a manufacturing and oil exploration company after he quit playing baseball, so he was rather wealthy. Obviously the home fans would have the easiest time getting tickets but there would be some for sale to the general public. If I did my math right, that meant he'd attended every World Series game since 1948.

That 8th inning was too similar (both the top and the bottom). Both the Twins and the Braves got out of bases loaded jams thanks to inning ending doubleplays Ironically, the Twins firstbasemen, Hrbek, was involved in both doubleplays

I always thought Morris must have thrown an enormous number of pitches in those 10 innings. It turned out he threw 132. Smoltz threw 100, Stanton 20 and Pena 24 for a total of 144 pitches for Atlanta. Also, screw Ted Turner. He's as bad as Bill Gates.

Had Lonnie Smith scored, and everything else stays the same, then he would've had a WS victory with Philly, St.Louis, KC, and Atlanta.

I don't get walking both Puckett and Hrbek who up to that point done absolutely nothing in the series. You just don't walk the bases loaded with only one out. Atlanta gave this game away and the series

Wow Bobby Cox sucked? Intentionally load the bases and let the right hander face the lefty needing only a sac fly to win the series? No reason for the second intentional walk. Just gave his own pitcher no margin for error! I'm so disillusioned, Bobby?

You obviously know nothing about baseball. Once Knoblauch sacrifice bunted Gladden over to third, any long fly ball was gonna beat them know matter who hit it. Your best bet at that point is to load the bases so that you have a force out at any base and then throw to 1st to complete a double play, or worst case you throw home for the force to keep yourself alive for at least one more batter. Same strategy the Twins used in the top of the 8th when they intentionally walked David Justice to load the bases and pitched to Sid Bream, who grounded into a double play to end the inning.

@@SuperfanDK Cox had a RHP vs a RHB with 1 out 1st & 3rd! NO WAY you load the bases! It's too easy for the batter with the bases loaded! (I know more about baseball than 99.9% of the population, I bet)

Both the Twins and the Braves did that same strategy in the 8th inning of intentionally loading the bases to set up the force and it paid off for both of them as both innings ended with a double play. But it backfired for the Braves in the 10th. Though I remember Kelly once saying that he would never have his closing pitcher intentionally walk somebody. Pena intentionally walked 3 guys.

@@jayNicks10 Yeah, but look at the closer Kelly had compared to what Atlanta had, the lack of a strong closer was a problem that kept coming up for them during their entire run in the 90s ('95 being the one year that it wasn't).

@@shawnsheikh1183 So you would rather pitch to a batter who had batted .284, 20 HRs, and 84 RBI on the season and had 12 RBI in his postseason career (2 ALCS and 2 WS); instead of either Jarvis Brown (the DH going into the inning) who only batted 37 times and had 0 RBI on the season, and never had a postseason hit; or Gene Larkin who only had 19 RBI on the season, was 2 for 10 in postseason at-bats, and had a leg injury that slowed his ability to run the bases? Stanton may have gotten Hrbek in the 8th, but that was when the bases were already loaded and Atlanta still had an inning left to respond. Cox wasn't going to push it with Hrbek in a game-ending situation with a base open, and I doubt that there were too many other managers that would in that situation.
