I remember this race so well. This was my second 500. I remember Michael dominating the entire race and his car dying on the backstretch with 11 laps to go. I wore shorts to this race and that was the coldest day ever. I think I wrapped the Indianapolis Star around my legs to block the cold wind. It was much harder to follow the race in these days unless you listened to a scanner or the radio broadcast with headphones. I remember tracking Michaels car closely and even counting the seconds for his lap times and I knew something was wrong because it was taking him too long to pass in front of us on lap 188/189. I always hoped Michael would win this race. Hopefully the pandemic is over for next year and those stands are full!!

ABC screwed up the shot of the closest indy 500 finish coming to the checkered flag. Along with the cold temp and half the field leaving on a stretcher, thats what I remember most.

Yep. I assume the director pre-chose a set of cameras for the finish moments and didn't have the sense to jump in and say "forget that, stay with the cars."
@yourmom-qq4tq6 ай бұрын
They were good at that, watch the last two laps of 1982 they were obsessed with the wives.
@MarsJenkar2 ай бұрын
@@BobGeogeo They seem to have learned their lesson; nowadays they have the infield homestretch camera track the cars all the way to the line, at which point the camera stops tracking them, adjusts the zoom a bit, and then focuses on the flag stand. Which is honestly a very good way of doing it, since it shows the race all the way to the line, and keeps the flair of showing the checkered flag being waved.

Aside from the memorable finish, this race and the whole month was a “bloodbath”. It was hard crash after hard crash with numerous injuries and sadly claimed one life (Jovy Marcelo). There were changes to this track next year such as reconfiguring the walls and replacing the low lines with the warm up lane.

The day before this race it was hot and humid with high temperatures in the high '80's, low '90's. Then a cold front rolls in overnight, and the low temperature was under 40. There was almost a frost that day. Looking back on it, I think the race should have been delayed an hour to warm up the track. Most of the crashes we saw would not have happened that day if they have waited to start it. Air temperature gradually went up to low '60's later in the afternoon. I sat in turn 4 that day. Wished I was in 1 to see the double pass of cheaver by the andretti's on the start.
@MarsJenkar2 ай бұрын
You're probably not wrong that the start should have been delayed, for the safety of the cars and their drivers. Lap 137 was where the last crash happened. The last two cautions were Buddy Lazier's blown engine and Michael Andretti's fuel pump failure. Apparently the track warmed up just enough for the last 50-60 laps that the drivers were able to cope. By the numbers, it was a massive bloodbath of a race. 13 cars crashed, 6 engine failures, 2 other mechanical failures (gearbox for Ted Prappas, fuel pump for Michael Andretti). Only 12 cars were running at the finish, and only 4 on the lead lap.

Ah yes 1992: -> The year where the temperature was so cold that two cars spun during Formation Lap. One of them is the pole sitter. -> The year that look like the Andrettis showed their most dominant display only to binned it by the end. -> Rick Mears career ending crash. -> Still to this day, the closest ever finish in Indy500 history. Scott Goodyear highest finish in his CART career, he had another chance in 1995 but got Black Flagged for ignoring penalty

pre-start crash and spin of Roberto and Gash. Left hand turns only means the right side tires heat up quicker than the left. Both drivers tried to punch it and hooked left. Sad and just an indication that this would be a very hard race.

That race had its fair amount of crashes on the day and quite a number of injured drivers, namely Mario and Jeff Andretti, Brian Bonner, Emerson Fittipaldi and others I can’t think of right now, also that was dashed unlucky for Micheal Andretti to retire from the race with only a handful of laps to go, when will the run of bad luck at Indy ever end for the Andretti family.

The coldest Indianapolis 500 race produced a wreckfest. This race as of today is the closest Indy 500 finish with LittleAl vs Goodyear. Along with LittleAl's famous Indy 500 quote! Ford returns to Indycar with the killer Cosworth engine giving Michael Andretti a massive advantage against the non-Ford powered engines until with eleven laps to go. It didn't win the 1992 Indianapolis 500 and Michigan 500 or even the 1993 Indy 500. However, Ford absolutely crushed the Chevrolets at the 1993 Michigan 500 taking all of the Top 5 spots.

Did anyone ever figure out what exactly was the cause of so many cars crashing out with extreme snap oversteer in turns 3 and 4 this year? There was never anything like it before, or since. Had to be a some combo weather issue: tires never warming properly for their compound, and loss of rear downforce due to the relative thinness of the air, as when a late spring cold front as powerful as this comes through dry, thin-less moisture-air sweeps down from Canada and pushes out out the thicker heavier air, a scenario which maybe was so unexpected it was never accounted for in the aero calculations. Something went badly wrong, to use one of my favorite Bobby Unser-isms 'for certain sure.' It's incredible to watch literally the same wreck caused by the same thing happen over and over and over again in an Indy 500. Very lucky nobody was killed (if Stan Fox hits Gasche a couple feet to the right differently, we likely would have. Stan's luck unfortunately went badly the other direction 4 years later...)
