I got the 440 out of storage today. I’ll show you a trick to pressurize the fuel tank so you can get it started more quickly.

@@thatalaskaguy Same here. I am still surprised at how smooth it is on acceleration. I was surprised last winter when I was able to hold 70 in fresh snow "breaking trail" at the airport. Due to some darting issues, I don't usually go much over 50-55 on groomed trails. There is a lot more there, but I don't want to pile her up, so I keep it reasonable out there. I am getting parts in to rebuild the front end before the snow flies around here...IF it actually does. Wisconsin "winters" have been a bit lacking lately. BTW, I am commenting from my "main" channel this time. There are a few videos of my Indy in a playlist on this one if interested.

@@NJP76 I always liked the feel of the liquid cooled Fujis. To me is was “Polaris power” as it really came on at the perfect RPM for climbing hills and breaking trail. I’m finding I’m now getting more interested in collecting older sleds of this era than wanting to buy new models.
@NJP76
@NJP76 8 ай бұрын
 @thatalaskaguy This is actually my first liquid cooled snowmobile. I was out of snowmobiling for around 20+ years. When I got out, liquid cooling was around, but fanners were still very mainstream. The right deal came along at the right time for this sled, and thus my re-entry into snowmobiling. I knew I missed it, but didn't realize how much I did until I got this Indy running and took my first ride on it. I feel the same as you about getting more into "older" sleds. If you ask me, the newer stuff is just plain ugly. I know many will disagree with me, but I just find very little appealing about "modern" machines. Not just the ugly factor, but my God the prices! I could mortgage a small house for less, LOL. I mean I know snowmobiling can get expensive, but man...... Currently, this Indy is the only sled I have, but would love to pick up a one-lunger sled someday. If only I could get my hands on a Yamaha Bravo or Enticer 250, that would make my day. @@thatalaskaguy

It’s kind of funny that the guy I bought the 440 from did exactly that during the late summer to get one started. He had to R&R the plugs twice to get it to work. I’ve not tried it when it’s really cold out.

@@shanegiggie I forgot what a difference the cold temps made in how they ran! I really like how the power comes on with the 440. I’d love to have that motor in a more modern chassis. I’ve never ridden Turnagain Pass. I’ve driven through there and watched videos but it’s like a 400 mile drive from me. I’m in Valdez so we have Thompson Pass. I’ve ridden by Hope back in the late 90’s, I think it was Resurrection Pass? It wasn’t too fun until we got to the end of the road or trail that we followed in. It was different riding than I was used to.

A bit off topic Alaska Guy but wondering if you have ever adjusted the weight on your skis on your vk 540. Mine steers very heavy. might be fine on ice. My limiter strap appears to be on the most loose setting. Seems as though a tighter setting would put more pressure on skis. Any thoughts?
@thatalaskaguy
@thatalaskaguy 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve not changed anything from stock with the suspension. I was riding it yesterday in fresh snow and it took a lot of effort to turn the bars from side to side on a slow speed, winding trail in the woods. So far hasn’t bothered me enough to look into changing anything. I’d be concerned if I was to let the limiter strap out I’m the sled would push even worse in certain snow conditions at slow speed. If you tighten the limiter it will put more weight on the skis and cause it to steer even harder.

@@thatalaskaguy mine appears to be "let out" all the way. way too tough to steer compared to tundra 600 ACE. I need to take a closer look and see if it I can let it out any more.

@@JereMiah-tg8to thanks for the additional info. You’ve got a 440 fan cooled engine rather than the liquid cooled model that’s in mine. That’s good news! The Fuji fan motors are super reliable and run forever. It makes around 44 horsepower. Just be sure not to run it really hard when the temps are warm in the springtime or it could seize up by getting too hot. I did that on a 488 fan cooled motor. Otherwise it’ll provide years and years of reliable service.
