Indeed. 1500lb chassis, 900+hp engines. And for the era I thought the CART cars looked better than any open wheel car. Let's not forget the talent pool!

There were many, many issues with CART. But it still is the best American open wheel racing there ever was.

This was a great series at the time: 4 different chassis, 4 engine suppliers, and a huge variety of tracks. 3 drivers in contention for the championship in the final race of the '96 season! Glad that Indycar is adding some of the old tracks back in but in my opinion they have a long way to go to match the old CART series.

So glad that today's coverage is much more extensive. Post race interviews especially on a season finale, and some analysis of the season overall are a must. But it's something we take for granted, because if you look at the ending of this coverage back in 1996 it's cut off so quickly.

I was at this race standing mostly at the bottom of the hill just before the right hander that went up to the corkscrew. Herta had been dominant all day as you'll see, then white flag came & I was totally expecting him to come around & take the checkers but noooooo....

I've just recently gotten into Indy racing, and watched the 2018 season. I just watched this race, and I'm impressed by how much quicker the cars seem, and the racing in general seems more competitive.

Thanks so much for publishing this! I was at the fence in turn 5 for most of the race so I missed "the pass". I did however snag a Budweiser Racing banner and a Texaco Havoline banner strung between some bushes in the foothills before I walked home to Toro Park. A great day --- and I still have those banners.

rob mush Straight 4 with very large turbos (like the old BMW F1 engine)? Could sound very similar if they make them rev high enough.
@robminmonaca6 жыл бұрын
ScrewCaptain27 maybe if they make them a 2.5 turbo V6. However INDYCAR still wants to make things cheap in terms of engines and chassis. If they would get rid of the spec rules maybe indycar will really get huge again.

rob mush they will keep the current 2.2 liter v6 but they will get enlarged to 2.5 liters have bigger turbos and higher psi in the turbos and the engines will have higher rev limits in the next 2 years this engines will have near 1000hp.

CART cars were the best cars in Indycar history. Small displacement V8 twin turbo with multiple chassis constructors. This was the best racing and the nicest sounding cars that were fast! This was also when Indycar attendance and world popularity was at its highest and gave F1 a run for the money! HEY, INDYCAR - ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION??? Bring back the small displacement V8's with all the old tracks and your series will be #1 again and will attract more drivers like Alfonso to not only try it, but stay to race the full season!!!
@Masca796 жыл бұрын
Organic Mechanic '90s CART cars were the best (open wheels) cars in RACING history.
@adri94286 жыл бұрын
Not a single brand wants the V8 to come back. Even NASCAR is exploring the use of V6 engines. IndyCar has had lots of conversations with pottential engine manufacturers about what they want, and if they wanted V8, it would have already been agreed upon. But they want the V6 twin turbo to stay to even consider making the investment.
@robminmonaca6 жыл бұрын
To bad Tony George and IMS hated everything CART was about back then in the 90s and only cared about sprint and midget car drivers.
@Masca796 жыл бұрын
They did not hate. They envied and have had loads of money to do it.
@robminmonaca6 жыл бұрын
Mascal I mean Tony George didn’t have to purge the sport like he did in the 90s with the 25/8 for the 1996 INDY/IRL 500. He had to be driven by other heads of Motorsport then. Especially F1 and NASCAR. I also read somewhere that he was also being guided by AJ Foyt because he hated Penske with a passion back then and helped Tony in the early days of the IRL. Tony had a couple of good ideas but he felt like he had all the money but by 2009 his family business was losing money like crazy and his sisters kicked him out to the curb and then Things started to get a little better.

For those of you who say that Zanardi's pass is illegal: Look closely and carefully! He was already ahead of Herta before he got off the track, so basically there's no advantage for him and it's a legit pass.
@Jikldk6 жыл бұрын
He was only ahead because he had no chance of staying on the track for that pass, he totally overshot that corner.
