Install of a new headunit into my 2001 Camry which has the factory JBL stereo system. The factory amp and speakers are really brought alive with this setup, definitely a HUGE upgrade.
Parts used:
Wiring harness (JBL): amzn.to/2axZfHS
Wiring harness (Non-JBL): amzn.to/2ayIDG2
Headunit options:
Kenwood Headunit: amzn.to/2ayIUc6
Newer Kenwood Headunit: amzn.to/2aprFUG
Pioneer Headunit w/ Touch Screen: amzn.to/2ayIUZl
Pioneer AppRadio Headunit: amzn.to/2axZsLa

This was really helpful in getting the correct harness for the JBL! Amplifier. Thanks! If I recall, the factory speakers are 6-3/4” in the front with something close to 1-3/4” mylar cone tweeters in the A-pillars, (usually these would be replaced with 6-1/2” & 1-1/8” aftermarket components), 6”x9”’s in the back deck. When I get to changing them, I’ll test the amp and see about what power it makes. I’m guessing by it’s sound that it’s getting no more than 45 watts per channel, which is more than twice as much if it were powered by a non-JBL Delphi head unit. I also have that problem with the crappy volume knob on mine. A squirt of Deoxit Fader cleaner F5 helps, but doesn’t fully fix the problem.

This was a very helpful video. Thank you! I replaced the stereo in my 1999 Toyota Solara Coupe with factory JBL System, with a JVC KW-R930BTS (Same as Kenwood) (The stereo that Toyota used was actually a Fujitsu Ten, Toyota Number = 86120-AA020 - I bought the car new). * However, The Metra Harness 70-8113 DOES NOT fit. For the 1999 Toyota Solara w/JBL you need Metra 70-8112. Also, it's not specified, but besides connecting the Red, Yellow and Black wires, you need to connect the Blue/white wires. The Blue/white wire may be marked "Power Antenna" (which I don't have), but it's actually the "Power On" for the Amp.

Following this video (and one for stereo removal from my car) I was able to install a Kenwood deck in my 2001 Avalon (with the JBL system). I tried to follow the wiring diagrams for the stereo and the wiring harness but got a little confused with the extra wires. Here’s where I wound up with a fully working system: Match red, yellow, blue/white wires. Combine two blacks with the other as mentioned in the video. RCAs (if available) will connect to the back of the deck. I didn’t have any cables connected to the subwoofer inputs on my deck. I had an extra blue wire on the harness, and several extra wires on the deck (including the 8 wires for the speakers, the brown, and at least one other). There was an extra antenna-type cable in the dash that wasn’t used. Soldering makes for a cleaner install but isn’t completely necessary. Wire nuts will also make for a good connection if used correctly.

I had to reference this video again. Does anyone know what that extra little antenna is for? I just replaced that Delphi piece of crap with a Pioneer. The rest stock JBL and front speakers for now. 6x9’s in the rear deck surrounds are gone, so those are disconnected for now. Just replacing that head unit makes a HUGE difference. Not only in volume, but resolution, clarity, less noise, as well, and more dynamic. That Delphi unit was like listening the speakers through a pillow. This is the first time I’ve done a head unit with stock speakers. Usually I do head unit and speakers, or head unit, amps, and speakers and subwoofer, so I never expected it to sound that good.

For an 01’ Camry with JBL, I have the same exact harness adapter you used in this video but my issue is not knowing what connections I need on the receiver. Looks like you plugged in those colored rca type plugs into the RCA outputs of the receiver? So in order to plug those in I would need a minimum of two pairs of RCA pre out on the receiver? I have a small single din that I want to utilize but it only has two rca outputs; one red (right) and one white (left). The wiring diagram on the package of that harness adapter is also questionable so I’m not sure what the purple, mint colored plugs are for. Any advice would be appreciated!
@redonKiLaus
@redonKiLaus 3 жыл бұрын
If you only have two RCA outputs, then you can use a pair of splitters to connect the left rear and right rear speakers (purple and mint) in addition to the front speakers. Not an ideal solution, but workable, space allowing. Ideal would be the pair of RCA outputs on the receiver. The wiring diagram was accurate for me in my use, so you shouldn't have any issues there either. Thanks for watching!

redonKiLaus thanks so much for getting back to me so soon. I have the non JBL wire harnesses as well and someone in a video said that you can bypass the JBL and the standard two Camry plugs will be back a lil further that you can run instead, essentially bypassing it and relying on the stereo. hey, i have a 2001 Camry LE, with the JBL included same connections as yours, i was wondering do you know where the amp is located and if its easily accessible? i have put aftermarket dual 6 by 9 speakers replacing the rear speakers and i want to know the output on the amp, the duals are 200 watt's each. and i also wanted to know if the amp is easily replaceable if it is under powering them.
@redonKiLaus
@redonKiLaus 7 жыл бұрын
I believe the JBL amp is located behind the dash - you can trace the connector that plugs into the stereo directly to it. I don't know what the output of the factory amp is, but if your new speakers are designed to be driven by a modern amplifier and not a stereo headunit, they may indeed be underpowered. The best test is truly by ear in this case, as if they sound balanced with the rest of the system, you should be good with regard to power. Thanks for watching!

On my adapter I have 3 ground wires, one ground and two amp grounds. What do I do with the two amp grounds? Can I connect all three together with the radio ground? I tried doing that but got a some static on the speakers and was wondering if the ground wires were the issue or if it was something else. (I'm trying to keep using factory amp btw) I have Jbl speakers
@redonKiLaus
@redonKiLaus 5 жыл бұрын
Unless you are connecting all three terminating into a large ring terminal and grounding to chassis, that is a no-no and the most probable cause of your static. It sounds like an insufficient ground to me. I recommend grounding them to the vehicle chassis (anything metal that bolts onto the metal body of the car, like the stereo brackets) using ring terminals under a bolt. Hope that helps!

Please help I have 2000 Toyota Avalon xls there is only 1 plug .I bought the aftermarket amplified wiring harness and the deck I'm wiring is similar to the Kenwood only jvc. There is no second plug for speaker wires and it powers on but I have no sound I was expecting the rca wires to substitute for all the speaker wires and I'm guessing that's not the case. Please point me towards the solution to wire this deck up. I stumbled across someone saying you have to wire the speakers from deck directly to factory amp located under passenger seat? Im replacing a broken factory jbl deck.
@redonKiLaus
@redonKiLaus 6 жыл бұрын
It could be that you need to enable the low-level (RCA) outputs on the back of your stereo in order to output audio through them as opposed to the high-level outputs that are integrated into the stereo-side harness plug. Just to make sure, you do have the RCA cables connected to the back of the stereo, correct? If that's the case (and they are plugged into the correct outputs on the stereo) and the stereo powers on, it should be a matter of finding out how to enable those outputs. Many stereos only come with the RCA outputs for the subwoofer channel enabled out of the box, so it's not an uncommon thing to undergo. Hope that helps point you in the right direction, and thanks for watching!

Why didn't you bypass the JBL amp and use the amp in the Kenwood? Would that risk blowing out the speakers? Is there a unique way you have to wire the harness to ensure the JBL amp is used and not the Kenwood?
@redonKiLaus
@redonKiLaus 7 жыл бұрын
You're not risking killing the speakers by bypassing the amp, but from experience, the JBL amp drives the speakers much better than the heatunit's built-in amp would, which is why I retained it. If you wanted to go a step further to get rid of the JBL amp, to do it properly, you would be looking at installing an aftermarket amp and ideally aftermarket speakers as well. Honestly, though, in my opinion, in a car of lower value like these Camrys, if the OEM equipment works properly it is not worth spending thousands on audio upgrades. With regard to the wiring harness, you just need to purchase the correct harness to mate up with the JBL system for your car model and year; the JBL systems do not use the same generic Toyota harnesses unless you want to bypass the amp. Hope that helps clarify for you, and thanks for watching!

Thank you for the great video and info. I have a Alpine INE-W940 head unit to install in a 01 Camry with the factory JBL system with the same HU you took out of this car. Would it be better to by-pass the factory JBL amp and just use the amp in the Alpine? I'm also changing out speakers to some good CT-Sounds component speakers and dampening the doors. So mail need to know if should by pass the JBL amp. And how to do that and should use the same harness you did on the Kenwood? The Alpine has front/rear/sub rca outputs.
@redonKiLaus
@redonKiLaus 2 жыл бұрын
If keeping the stock speakers, I'd keep the stock amp for sure. With you putting in some aftermarket ones, I'd really recommend looking at their power ratings and comparing to that of your headunit - if they will work together well, then I'd bypass, if not, might keep the stock amp or replace with an aftermarket one as well. Bypassing does require different wiring and a different harness. Thanks for watching!

@@redonKiLaus Thank you very much for getting back to me. I have some CT-Sounds Meso 6.5 inch component speakers and a pair of Skar Audio TX69 6x9's for the rear deck to install. I also have several really good NOS amps by Poweramper that are built for sound quality I bought after they went out of business, so probably should go ahead and install an amp to run the speakers off of then. Maybe just leave the JBL amp in the car if wife ever decides to get rid of it but with only 100k on it the cars is cheap to drive and runs like a sewing machine. So then I would just buy a harness for an amp ? Do mainly on these harnesses you solder together a lot of the same color coded wires?

I don't have any firsthand experience with the Solara version of the JBL system, but my guess is that if you wire up the amp like I did in this video, then your sub will be getting signal. The shifter is stock, but this particular Camry is a Gallery Series, which, among other things, gives you bits of leather all around the vehicle along with leather seating surfaces. I'm sure you could find a leather-wrapped shifter on eBay, which is a great source for any used vehicle parts that are not available new anymore. I'd venture to guess that the leather wrapped shifter, parking brake, and steering wheel came in all Camry models with leather seating surfaces, so it may be fairly common. If you think that's bad, Mercedes used fiber optic lines for the upgraded Bose system in the early 2000s, which made it impossible to install ANY aftermarket headunit. could somebody explain why he connected one black cable from new headunit to the two black wires on the harness that connects inside in the car? is that even safe?
@redonKiLaus
@redonKiLaus 6 жыл бұрын
That was done because one black wire is for the chassis ground while the black wire with the white stripe is for the amplifier ground, so connecting those together is the ideal setup in terms of simplicity since the ground is common. Your other option in terms of wiring would be to terminate the amp ground with a ring terminal and connect it to the chassis somewhere, but that is completely unnecessary in this case. Either setup is safe. If you need more information on this particular harness, the manufacturer's PDF manual is here: pdf.crutchfieldonline.com/ImageBank/v20170313094500/Manuals/120/120708113.PDF Thanks for watching!

I bought the Kenwood DPX 501bt and a set of wires that didn't have the RCA plugs. My 2000 Solara does have JBL. There are 2 plugins in the right rear where the radio fits. The kit I bought had female plugs for both of those what look like are speaker plugins plus power and ground to the larger male plugin. Anyway, I bought the plug that has the RCA plugs and even though it looks easier, you do not show where that white female plug goes that has the RCA connectors and the power wires from the radio. Yours shows that all of the individual speaker wires are taped up and not used. But that cable has to plug into something and you never showed where it went! It looks like one of the male plugins goes to 2 speakers and the other one goes to the other speakers and power and other controls, some used, some not. It looks like if the smaller male plug behind the radio opening has to have something to feed the other speakers, not sure if front or rear. Other than that I rearlly enjoyed the video, was helpful. Yours may not have the JBL system (no integrated amp). If that's the case, you can use the standard Toyota wiring harness. Thanks for watching!

i thought i would lose the amp if i put on aftermarket radio
@redonKiLaus
@redonKiLaus 6 жыл бұрын
If you do it the way I did in the video with the JBL specific harness, then you don't lose the amp (at least in the case of the Camry). I wanted a simple setup in this car with no aftermarket amp, and since the stereo wouldn't drive the speakers as well as the factory amp, I decided to retain it. Thanks for watching!

You soldered the ground and the negative in the harness to the negative from the NEW deck correct? Essentially connecting the 3 black cables together ?

@@ciscosarmiento6902 That sounds correct, but it's been so long since I did the install that I can't be certain from memory. Thanks for watching!

redonKiLaus ok that’s great news. So when you say head unit do you mean car stereo? Also would this allow Bluetooth?

I came back to this video because my original Toyota headunit crapped out. So with the soldering I match the colors red to red , yellow to yellow, and when I mesh the two ground wires to the one black ground? There’s also that stray blue wire next to the red is there a blue wire I also have to match? I’m a little confused and sorry if I sound dumb.
@redonKiLaus
@redonKiLaus 5 жыл бұрын
A blue wire is typically going to be a remote turn on wire for the amp. You may not use all of the wires in either the stereo or vehicle side harness depending on your installation needs and extent of equipment. I believe on this car I combined multiple grounds into one, but it has been so long since I did the install I can't remember for certain. Hope that helps at least a little bit, and thanks for watching!

redonKiLaus wow thanks for the reply and just one more question. On my stock radio I pulled out there were two black cables that came out of it. Are those the rca cables that go to the amp? One had a gray tip and one was black if I’m correct I only looked at them just to see what I’m getting into. Or are those the antenna wires???
@redonKiLaus
@redonKiLaus 5 жыл бұрын
Those sound like the antenna wires - there shouldn't be RCA cables connecting to the stock amp.

Does anyone where the blue/white amp turn on cable from the harness connects to? There is another solid blue cable labeled power antenna and that’s connected to the head unit. Do they both connect to the same place or do I not need one
