1997 Honda Accord Lower Ball Joint Removal and Installation (5th Gen)

This is a 5th generation, 1997 Honda Accord Special Edition. You can't use a vanilla ball joint kit from the auto parts store to remove the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle as there's nowhere to brace the top tube.
I use a 1" pipe to pound it out. I place the knuckle on a wooden pallet to hold it still without damaging anything. Special thanks to my wife for the pallet idea and for filming. :)

Great video! Recently got new tires and the tire tech told me I have a bad upper/lower ball joints, tie rod ends, and would wave the alignment fee if I was to give them my business. They were quoting me an outrageous price for parts and labor. Looked on line for parts, purchased front and rear for a fraction on what they were asking. Now, looking on KZfaq how to perform this task. Once completed, I’ll be getting that alignment. Thanks!

What brand ball joint did you get? I’m hoping the one I got came with grease inside but were you able to find a way to put grease in?

Mevotech GK9643 from RockAuto. I did not add any grease, but it's still working fine. I guess it was pre-greased.

so my bearing is sticking up like .25in and joint cant come all the way out. any tips?

That's very strange! I'm no expert, but perhaps it's not an original spec part? You'll probably have to remove it first.

I had to cut the stud off completely and then blow a hole completely through the ball joint. Once it is out I intend to brake hone the hole as it is completely stupid to be that tight in the steering knuckle. Also a good time to remove the wheel bearing from the steering knuckle and clean around wheel bearing with a bench wire brush to remove the rust. The other side, the steering knuckle I will glass bead clean and then put grease on both parts so as next time it will come apart easier if you need to replace the rotors. Truely a stupid design,,,,,,,,,,,,,
