A fastener by fastener tutorial for replacing the sway bar end bushings and frame bushings on 94-97 Accords.
The common symptom of a failed sway bar bushing is a clunk or knocking sound when going over bumps.
When one or more of the donut bushings crack metal to metal contact between the sway bar and the lower control arm occurs which causes the noise.
For 1994-1997 Accords the bushings are sold separately and are Honda part number 51314-SM4-020. You will need a total of 8 (4 per side).
In the video I say you can use penetrating oil on the frame bushings to make them slide on easier. I misspoke. Do NOT use petroleum based lubricants (such as penetrating oil) on the rubber and only use silicone based lubricants. Petroleum based lubes will harm the rubber silicone won't.

A 2003 uses end links instead of the stacked donut bushings the 94-97 Accords used. They perform the same function and couple the end of the sway bar to the suspension and are prone to failure just like the donut bushings. They just fail in a different way one of the studs usually separates from one of the cups on the metal link. Essentially disconnecting one end of the sway bar from the suspension. The nuts like to rust to the studs which causes the studs to twist when you attempt to remove them. Especially if you're not using an impact and heat. If you have a Dremel with a cut off wheel you may be better off cutting the nuts off and replacing them. Make a diagonal cut through the nut then place a chisel inside the cut and strike it with a hammer. If the cut is deep enough this will cause a hairline fracture that will release the tension on the nut and make it easier to remove.

I admire the knowledge base to understand when design changes have a meaningful impact on replacement procedures. Is there an easy reference you can look up to know when the changes are made for any particular part/model/make of vehicle? These kind of step by step instructional videos are gold for those with the same vehicle.

Got it all put back together the correct way and it's a whole different car. Thank you! For those doing this job with or without oe parts, when he lifts up on the sway bar with a jack stand is a must. Otherwise you won't have enough clearance to get those bushings in correctly. My problem.... 👍

Good video, I would only add, get a can of white lithium Grease. The bracket bushings can be reused if not cracked, or get new ones... Make sure you lube the inside of the bushing (which touches the sway bar). It will help keep squeaky noise out of new rubber, or old rubber.

I wouldn't recommend going under the car to kick the tires off. That's just asking for trouble.
@Bushougoma
@Bushougoma 8 жыл бұрын
+alixklimov If you're worried about a light kick then you've never had to use a sledgehammer on a tire to get some real rusted wheels off. Rust on the ring in the center of the hub which centers the wheel causes this. If you've never experienced this either you're in an area where it doesn't snow and the roads get salted or you're lucky. A vehicle properly supported on jack stands is very stable if it's supported by a jack alone you shouldn't be under the vehicle to begin with.

The car was properly supported on jack stands. We had to do this all the time in the shops I used to work in. Either a kick or a sledge hammer

@@Bushougoma tbh, I myself got a little worried, for what ever reason my jack stand fell down a notch. I ive never been claustrophobic but When I tried getting under my car, I felt myself hesitating. I didnt wanna get crushed. So I stacked a cinder block and some 4x4 wood block i had around. it was ridiculous, but it eased my mind and I continued to work on the car. i still felt uneasy under the car though. I found myself in a slight rush mode. crazy.

Just installed the moog set today. What a difference! I did the frame bushings too. I could tell the difference even on the highway. But we have speedbumps in our neighborhood and before if you went more than 1mph there was a feeling of almost total collapse. You could feel massive flex. That feeling is gone. I like the way the moog set is set up better too. Each bushing is bigger and the hard part is built into the bushing.

BTW, if you have a 94-97 accord LX or DX, there is no rear sway bar! I went to check and see if the bushings were OK or worn out like the front and found there is none! Car handles very well for not having one at all.

If you inbolt both end links you don't need to have the jack stand to support the sway, since there is no tension on the other side, btw, that was an epic way to take off a wheel!

Accords don't die, they just wear out parts like these a little at a time! This is on my summer list. Already replaced calipers to shut up the pin noise and semi frozen side. My bushings are still intact, but they had shrinkage over time which allows the clanking!! Honda engineers must have really decided to make repair shops money by making wearing out parts creak, clank, clunk and other bump in the night noises!

@Bushougoma
@Bushougoma 9 жыл бұрын
Upper, lower ball joints, or tie rods that have lost all their grease due to a damaged boot can squeak. If the boots are good I'd check the bushings. Bushings usually aren't replaced unless they're worn or damaged. So it's not uncommon not to replace them during a strut replacement. If there are no signs of damage on the bushings and you need to isolate which is causing the noise. You can try hitting them with some silicone spray wherever there is metal to rubber contact if the sound goes away those bushings are the culprit.
@efrensaclolo7021
@efrensaclolo7021 3 жыл бұрын
I just spray a silicon on it and grease it also with silicon grease and you are good to go and do it again every year.Or spray them with 303 or armorall protectant to condition the rubber.

You can also make it easier by taking off the frame bushings and letting the bar rest on the exhaust. You should be changing the frame bushings anyway. I loosened the ends, then pulled the frame bushings then put the end bushings on with the bar loose on the exhaust. Then the frame bushings.

On the bright side I was able to film a video on finding a bent rim.

Would replacing these bushings fix that problem?
@Bushougoma
@Bushougoma 9 жыл бұрын
Antonio Canales Wear on one side of the tire indicates an alignment problem due to excessive camber. The camber isn't adjustable on these vehicles so it only occurs when suspension components such as the control arm bushings or ball joints are worn. Support the vehicle on jack stands and examine the suspension as I did in the steering wheel shake video and check for play.
