This should work for the 1988-1999 Suburban, Yukon, and Tahoe. It should work for the 1988-1998 Silverado and Sierra. It sucks when it happens because you can not get it out of park. Most of the people it sounds like if you wiggle it and keep trying you can get it to finally shift out of park but eventually you will be locked in to park. The dealer with charge at least 250 dollars to fix this, but you can do it yourself with just a flat head screwdriver and a little time for under 100 bucks. Thanks for watching if you liked the video or it helped you out please give it a thumbs up and subscribe. Also check out the other fixes for this year of vehicle. Thanks for watching see you on the next one.

FYI - It is VERY difficult to snap the part onto the ball studs, at least it was in my 98 truck. My original part was missing so there was a little surface rust on the ball studs. I scrubbed them with a wire brush then put a little silicone on them. I had to use a long screwdriver to press it on, it was a total PITA! You feel like the part is going to break, but it will eventually snap on. Thanks for this video, I really appreciate it!!

You saved the day!! Spot on for my 98 Silverado! I replaced my trashed transmission cable a year ago, which had rusted apart underneath my feet. And I was now scratching my head as to why I was having problems again, i.e. stuck in park. I was getting ready to look in several other possible areas for the problem, then I stumbled on your video. Huge Thanks, and thanks for taking the time to post the very helpful video!!

Mine just started doing this. I was looking and looking and this made sense by what i could see. I unplugged and now i can get it out of park but i definetly will replace the part. That's why i stick with this truck because. They are old enough that most issues are known and not expensive to fix. I feel sorry for others who have newer vehicles and have to get the dealership to fix them. Thanks man you saved many many allot of headaches.

Video was a great help. Would add that on a 2004 Suburban, there is what looks like an ECM and a vent tube blocking access to the part. You can pop the vent piece out, and a 7mm socket can remove the bracket for the ECM-looking box. The box drops, and there is the part you need access to. Hope this helps, and thank you for a very helpful video.

Thanks for the insight on how this solenoid fits in. Just a couple things I did different. Unclip the arm from the shift lever, shift works. Unclip the device from both ends, work it out to the bottom and you can disconnect the electric plug a lot easier. After you get the device snapped back in place, with the vehicle in park, slide the round part as far aft as possible then push the white tab in to lock it. Otherwise you may not get the safety feature to work. The round part needs to be as far aft as possible so it can lock the shaft with the indent in the shaft.

🎉🎉🎉😊I been stranded several times lately on 99 Suburban since our friend fixed brakes n tire rods. Its my painter work truck very stressful n not like I wanted to take a nice vehicle instead to jobsites or face a $300 dealer repair on the ol beast plus towing or lose work . If you left it sit long enough it reset. . Geesh so simple n frankly imo a way dumb safety feature .. I couldn’t get the wire plug out but unlocked the lever for now. I tht it would be a $300 plug harness .( as in hubs big truck land everything is $$$$$$)

Thank you Señor, for the insight of that actuator. It’s supposed to lock the little bar in place to prevent the truck from shifting into park; but the little mounting hole and the bar go mounted on some ball joint studs, on the shifter and the column. I think you have to put use some seam sealer or Gorila Glue on the terminal and actuator mounting hole, to mount it back on the column and shifter. In my case, there was no bushings or anything where it buttons to the ball joint studs.

I have a 2001 chevy Tahoe z71 & your video is awesome & explains it SOOOOO much better than any video I’ve watched. It seems it’s much easier to access on your GMC from underneath I literally couldn’t get my head in there to see from near the pedals 😅 so I took the knee panel off & there’s the metal plate in front still that I may have to take off 😂 but I was able to get the green clip off just not the wires yet. Having acrylic nails & limited hand space is my enemy at the moment. Chevrolet dealership also just told me that the part I need is called automatic trans shift lock so I’m hoping they’re right. Again, thank you so much for your video & very helpful information. I’m hoping this is the issue because I already had my trans gear shift cable changed from it being stuck in park cause right now we have to shift it from underneath truck & I can’t do that by myself. Hope I can get this last part disconnected so I can see if that’s my issue.

What MG question concerns is the speed sensor..it fluctuates-🙁🙁 On my model the speed sensor unit is 90% contained in a housing on the transmission/tailhaft. Can I remove this myself or does it have to go to a shop? PLMK when you get a chance. Thanks man-

I was stuck after picking up a brake booster that I ordered from a parts store, I would've had to pay towing plus who knows what to get it fixed on my Chevy Express 2500 2007 work van. I googled gmc park shift on my phone, got this video and saw the green wire and shape of the shift interlock solenoid, stuck my head under the dash and found it on the drivers side of the steering column, disconnected the plug and VOILA! Thank you very much sir. Here is a tip for you and others. If we trust Jesus the Christ as our saviour, through His undeserved mercy, He will save us from a crisis eternity and transport us to be with Him forever. Great video, thanx. Question: When you pushed the sockets onto the knobs, did you have to use a lot of force to get them to pop into place? Thanx...

Great Vid, Just an FYI if your stuck…. if you turn your key one click to accessory you can put your truck in neutral and then turn the key to start.

Dude....you rule! Finally a usefull utube video! I just got my 99 tahoe back today after shelling out 450.00 dollors forba brake booster replacement. I was on my way home and stopped for gas. Bingo....cant shift. Popped the wires off and went on my way! I drive heavy trucks and grew up in the 70's when you actually had to have a brain to drive. All the old cars would shift without a foot on the brake. All heavy trucks will start in gear. DUH! .I wont be fixing it . I will just keep using the common sense god gave me unlike todays drivers who need automatic breaking and cars that park themselves.

The small white tab on my replacement unit is completely out of the adjuster block. How the heck do I get it back inside so I can fully insert it once installed? Thanks!

I tried that and it didn't work for me. The part was broke so I have replaced it, and even when it didn't work I tried unplugging it and it still wouldn't go into drive.. but did make progress going into Reverse and Neutral it almost goes into drive and will if you pull really hard and hold it down, so I'm thinking it might be the trans cable or the shifter spring or gear selection mechanism
