Step 1: DISCONNECT NEGITIVE BATTERY TERMINAL Step 2: remove intake hose Step 3: mark wires from old cap to new. This is a common leak problem with Hondas. Highly recommend to replace the internal seals of your distributor while doing this. Little more work but less headache down the road. Even in this video you can see the oil from the valve connection to the distributor. Replacing the seals inside the distributor and to the cam can help this. Just remember the distributor is part of the engines timing so make sure to mark all your postions ie. Rotor head, wires and the rotor shaft position to cam.

I would leave the wires on the cap and align them back in the new cap. So the firing order is correct.

Thanks a lot for your easy to understand, well made video. Really like ALL your videos. They are very good information how-to resources for a new DIYer like myself. Just wondering if you will be doing a video on Throttle Body removal/cleaning or Throttle Position Sensor replacement anytime soon. Thanks again.

what made you change the rotor and cap? could you do a diagnosis video of how you coukd determine a bad cap and rotor?
@bigfootbillunknown9511
@bigfootbillunknown9511 6 жыл бұрын
It's good sense to replace the Distributor Cap & Rotor, when doing a Tune-up. Best to be safe, than sorry. Many things, you can't see inside the Cap that may be broken, cracked, corroded or intentionally fould up by some mechanic. For Example: A #2 pencil, run around inside the Distributor Cap, will cause the engine to misfire. When in doubt, change it out.
@gfriedman99
@gfriedman99 6 жыл бұрын
You cant diagnose a bad cap and rotor. As it slowly degrades performance will decrease but it happens so slowly that you cannot tell. If it is really bad it could cause misfiring. Thats why these should always be changed at regular intervals. Same with your pcv valve. I do mine every 60k

@iamthelight1823
@iamthelight1823 Жыл бұрын
It may cause misfires to happen and always mark wire order from old cap to new. Remember, the distributor is part of the engine timing. If you are having this issue, you will need to use a timing tool to get the timing right.

What was the initial issue? My 98 was working fine yesterday. Now it cranks but will not turn over. The temp is just over freezing and the humidity is high. I guess it is a cap/rotor, but not sure. Not looking forward to a tow if I can't get it started.

I just paid $900 to have Midas replace my distributor cap, wires, and plugs because I told them my was stalling while driving on the freeway. They take the car for a drive 5 times before the car stalled on them. Their conclusion was the cap. WRONG!!! The very next day the car stalled on my way to work and I pulled into the center turn lane. I tried 10 times to start the car! After a couple of minutes, it started and I got to work late. I watched several videos and determined it must be the main relay getting hot. After it cools, the problem goes away and the car starts again. It might've been the ignition system with a key getting jostled, but the car should start right away if it was that. I believe it's that main relay and I saw how the mechanic soldered the connections back on better.

gymnasticscoachdan My car didn't stall on me while I was driving, but it would always take forever to start when it was hot outside. The problem eluded me for years until I came across a forum saying that the main relay could be the problem. I changed it out and I haven't had the problem since. Hopefully you haven't had any further problems.

No. A bad cap and rotor will degrade performance but the engine should still run. What could make the car stop randomly could be dozens of things. But an oil leak in the distributor could cause that.

Hi! I saw oil leak on the right side of distributor so why did you change rubbers inside distributor too? I would like to remove distributor motor out of engine and change rubbers for no more oil leaking but I don't know how. So could you make a video and sharing with everyone how to change rubbers inside of distributor please?.
