For everyone watching this in 2021, free-all is the best rust eater and penatrant oil to use. Its expensive, but trust me it works. This is the best video out there for this vehicle.

glad you liked the video. What is funny about this video is that my usual ball joint installer tool was faulty so I had to use the good ole' hammer press method (whack it in!). Ironically after much thought the hammer method if you're careful works just as good.

Great tutorial! Really helped me a lot. I'm not sure why the suspension fork needs to be disconnected. I ripped a bolt head off trying to free it, but it turns out I could do the entire job without getting it loose at all. Also, some have commented about how difficult it is to get that ball joint out. I second that! I was ready to give up with the ball joint's bolt ending up all smashed and misshapen after repeatedly banging. I found I REALLY had to brace the entire assembly tightly against my feet, put a hammer or something metal below the ball joint bolt to kinda hold it in place, then WAIL as hard as I could with a sledge hammer... then it finally BUDGED! It was a happy moment. After that i just kept wailing and eventually got it to pop out. So DON'T GIVE UP... just keep whacking away with force... it really does take a lot of effort. Also I had trouble getting ball joint nuts back on cuz the ball joints kept spinning. Be sure to clean up your nuts and bolts well, WD-40 them, and use a large (4") C-clamp to squeeze them tightly while you tighten down the nuts. It's tricky. Car's driving much better now - no more scary clunking from my suspension! All thanks to this guy. :D

This is is a great video. I have one tip on the ABS sensor: You can gently tap on the back side of the sensor(side opposite bolt) and remove it. I figured this out after breaking the passenger side trying to "wiggle" it out. The cost for a new one is $28 at local Autozone and one hr. of my time anyway.

great tip! I've used that technique in the past but I'm always leery on damaging the face of the sensor (I've actually ruined one in the past). Do whatever works but just remember that prying or hitting away at a sensor can potentially damage it. The pitfalls of corrosion....

The upper ball joint is also replaceable , the old one is pressed out with a hammer , the new can be knocked in with a hammer or use a socket and vice . The new one comes with a circlip to secure into the groove .As it is a large circlip , after fitting I use stainless locking wire through the eyes of the clip for added security. I have 2 Accord V6 Coupes in the UK . When breaking all the taper joints ,use a 2 lb + ball pean hammer ( not a 16oz chippies hammer ) and strike the casting firmly at the end .You are separating a taper joint that is not corroded . One blow properly directed is usually sufficient , if your not replacing the top joint , use a drift and hammer as the striking area is smaller . A 'C' clamp is not necessary simply gently tap the base of the joint until the taper locks in or place a jack underneath for the same purpose and just re tighten . Use old ATF and not WD40 . WD40 means 'water displacement formula 40 ' its not a penetrating fluid . ATF does a great job on corroded parts as it has both higher lubricity and better ' creep' ( the ability to get between parts ,hence all the special gaskets and seals in an automatic transmission gearbox) . If you mix it with a little pump petrol you get the same formula as the old ' Plusgas' penetrating fluid . I used the same mix to undo the engine bearer to bulkhead bolts on a P51D 'Mustang' that had been at the bottom of the North Sea since April 1945 . The bearer and bulkhead behind the firewall being aluminium is not a good place to apply heat but the old ATF out of my Honda CRV with petrol did a great job on those and many other seized bolts .

that is interesting, I always thought the front upper ball joints were part of the upper control arm and that the entire assembly had to be replaced. I'll have to look into this further as I swear the honda's that used the double wishbone suspensions had a replaceable lower joint but not the replaceable upper joint. Thanks for sharing that knowledge as I would've otherwise not known.

Several different manufacturers on EBay UK , I can't remember which one I used but all follow the same fitting principle . Search Honda Accord Upper ball joint . I think 2003 Type R on are the same . All 4 upper and lower for about $60 . If you can't order them in the US I'll be happy to send them over .

@ LongTimeTTFan - detail is a good and bad thing. Some criticize for me talking way too much with too much detail but here is my thought - if you're going to show and tell then you might as well explain what the part/component does and how to PROPERLY repair something. Some vids I see online just show how to pull it out without explaining anything and I've always believed that knowledge is POWER. Its your car - safety is paramount no matter how insignificant a part might seem.

I thought the whole point of this video was to show HOW to remove the ball joint. You start explaining at 12:30, turn off the camera to do the actual work to break it loose and then at 12:35 it's out!. Then at 13:48 you explain how yo are going to put it in, turn off the camera, do the work and 11 seconds later it's done. You missed the whole part of the video!
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 8 жыл бұрын
1. I didn't have a camera person to help film and you can't point out a joint and hold a camera at the same time. 2. To remove the ballpoint by using a socket and literally point it out. I did show the setup so it is quite straightforward. 3. Reinstallation is done NORMALLY using a ball joint clamp BUT the one I rented was faulty and so I used a hammer and tapped the ball joint in (it is remarkably easy). 4. I did explain at13:50 that I ran into a problem with my ball joint clamp tool and explained the process of how to install it. 5. I will admit this video wasn't my best (in fact probably one of my worst) but the general procedure and concepts were explained.
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 10 жыл бұрын
@Dongha- The upper joint was still very tight so there was no need to replace the upper joint. Upper ball joints can be quite pricey when purchased from Honda. I tend to use genuine Honda parts as I find their quality to be considerably higher quality (and more expensive) and if I'm going through the troubles of removing major parts on my car that I'd rather put in high quality parts once than to replace it over and over and over again.

I would of gone with Ingalls Ball Joints they are the same as OEM Honda which I always do buy OEM Parts but when it comes to suspension I like to Upgrade my balljoints, suspension, camber kit ect since my V6 accord is lowered. feels so amazing and just the comfort after replacing everything. but over all great video so helpful to those that need it.
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 10 жыл бұрын
@ LaCountry8l8 - yep Ingalls joints would be a good alternative to the stock Honda ones. Too bad they're not easily found in my neck of the woods (at least I haven't seen them in stores). The US or other countries likely have more access to alternative part suppliers. Yes having a tight suspension is always great and makes the car handle very differently with a LOT less "SLOP" in handling. Thanks for the comments - I wish my balljoint installing tool worked better (it was stripped) so I had no choice but to resort to using a hammer to install them which works but I'd prefer to use the ball joint press.
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 10 жыл бұрын
@ Scott Duty - I knew the joints were loose when the car needed a wheel alignment and the stealership said the lower joints were getting a little loose. This Accord is a V6 model so the front end is quite heavy putting and the roads here have many bumps and potholes leading to premature wear. I've had a 91 Civic that was on the original ball joints at 500, 000 kms! YMMV

Hey buddy. I thought the video was informative and pretty straightforward. While some viewers found it lacked info and other thought there was more than enough, there are several ways to do any job. That being said, everyone wants their "work" to shine and criticism is hard to swallow. My advice to you is to thank others for their comments, good or bad, learn from each one and make yourself better. I have been behind the camera for many years and I produced stinkers. great job on the editing and audio. If you aren't comfortable showing your face on KZfaq get some close shots using a tripod and show a few action shots. Don't say seven words when four will do. Good luck.

Is there any chance of looking at the base of the lower ball joint for the "B" without taking things apart? I'd like to have my parts ready before starting. It's sad that this can be either $50 for two lower ball joints or $380 for both arms. Great video! Love the detail and tips.
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 10 жыл бұрын
@ Timmym734 - sadly you gotta remove that knuckle off the car first and use a dremel or wire brush to remove the dirt and corrosion off the top of the ball joint to look for the marking. But I look at it this way - if you need to replace a ball joint then it won't matter whether it's serviceable or not because it will need to be fixed either way for the sake of everyone's including your own safety right?
@Timmym734
@Timmym734 10 жыл бұрын
I really just want to tear it apart once and get it done, due to time, work, no 2nd car, etc. Obviously I'd like to save money, but if I have to get the whole deal then I will. Gotta be safe :) I'd be too nervous to drive around if I felt things weren't done right. Thinking about all of this gave me an idea. I may order the knuckles AND the separate ball joints. Whatever I don't use, I'll return. Thanks for the advice! It's appreciated very much.

I appreciate your good work here in clearly explaining how to do it. I had forgotten what a pain it is dealing with rust. How do you know a lower ball joint is bad? Does the handling suffer or do you just look for tire wear or looseness?
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 10 жыл бұрын
you can tell by prying in between the lower control arm and steering knuckle (where the lower ball joint is) and if there is movement or "play" then the joint is bad. There should be NO play on a good ball joint. The other tell tale sign if the car is on a hoist and you give the tires a wiggle by holding the tire at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock position. Depending where the play is (top or bottom) is how you can tell if the joint is worn. In this particular car's case it was the dealership that tried to perform an alignment on it and realized that it was worn. As fas as what happens this is what occurs when the joint is worn: 1. Suspension geometry goes off kilter which means the car won't handle the way it was designed to. 2. If it's really badly worn you can often hear the front end "clunk" when hitting bumps. 3. Tires wear down faster (remember your geometry is off). 4. Car can't be aligned properly (again geometry related). 5. Poses a huge safety risk b/c the joint could eventually snap and break apart completely disconnecting the steering knuckle from the suspension. 6. Handling is worsened (b/c of incorrect geometry). Whenever a joint begins to develop any degree of play it gets replaced. Aftermarket joints for example are roughly $35 each and there is NO excuse not to service them. Safety for you and others on the road are paramount.

Few pointers. Wasn't necessary to loosen the fork. Always use a center punch to remove the axle shaft.to prevent the risk of damage to the end. Ball joint separation tool can also be use to loosen top arm ball. joint . If using a hammer you should pound closer to the ball joint.

Only suggestion I got is there is a wonderful tool called a pickle fork, it works wonderfully to separate balljoints and tierod ends.
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 9 жыл бұрын
I actually have 2 pickle forks but stopped using them b/c of the constant tearing it does on my tie rod end and ball joint grease boots. Even the tool I used in the video isn't quite up to snuff as far a popping off a steering knuckle's ball joint without doing some tearing. Each to their own I guess - I've had nothing but bad luck with pickle forks :(

I believe the tip is to use a pry bar to pry at the lower ball joints to check if they're loose instead of wiggling the tire at the 6 and 12 o'clock position to determine if there is play in the joint. You'd put the pry bar between the ball joint/steering knuckle and lower control arm and pry it back and forth.

I sound really Canadian? LOL I guess it is no different when I say someone sounds very American or British... I of course don't know differently but it is humouring to have someone point that out. yes most of Canada does use salt on the roads in the winter which causes rust. If you'd believe it, the rust on this Accord isn't really much rust at all, in fact it is considered minimal by my standards. If a car came from Eastern Canada then it is REALLY bad, so bad that I avoid working on cars from those areas.

It varies from shop to shop and from country to country but as a general rule of thumb this would've cost about $500-650 CAD at the local honda dealership. Ball joints alone are $150 each (I believe that is what Honda's current prices are in 2021). If you're in the US you probably should expect to spend about $400 for the same job b/c parts in the US are SO much cheaper than they are in Canada.

I believe the new ball joint from Honda did NOT come with a new castle nut and it also did not come with a snap ring. There is a revised installation procedure from Honda that doesn't require the snap ring anymore. If you buy aftermarket ball joints they do come with a new castle nut and snap ring. Not sure why the discrepancy but Honda at the time of this video excluded the two parts you're asking about.

+Angel Fuentes Angel make sure your CV axle is installed correctly AND that the internal and external races in the joint move freely . I would recommend you remove the axle and move the joints back and forth to make sure there is no rubbing or binding within the joint. Sometimes if the races are misaligned it will cause you all sorts of grief. Your CV axle could've been dislodged without you even knowing it when you were servicing your ball joints. Did you double check your ball joints too? Are they pressed all the way in?

you never hand a brake caliper from the the hose. The hoses can be damaged or compromised if they're not properly supported and that could lead to catastrophic brake failure. Never hang anything from your brake hoses.

piercedasian Okay thanks. Also by the way how do you know if your lower back joints are bad?
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 9 жыл бұрын
FRJae get the car onto a hoist or securely support it such that the car won't have ANY chance of falling off your support stands and give the tire a strong "wiggle" at the 12 and 6 o'clock position. If the joints are loose your strong wiggles will reveal play in the joint.

How do you tell the ball joint is bad?
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Chong jack the car up and make sure it is secured. Grab the wheel at the 12 and 6 o'clock position and wiggle back and forth. Is there play? If yes then ball joint is bad. You can also jack up the car and pry at the knuckle where the ball joint "plugs" into the control arm. The gap is tight but you can easily get a pry bar in there. Pry at it. Does it move? If yes then it is loose and needs to be replaced :)

Why turn off camera while actually removing ball joint?
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 4 жыл бұрын
Ah good question! In my description I did stay that I really struggled with this video due to the nature of the work and lack of a tripod or help to dim so I couldn’t film and do the work properly. This is probably one of my worst vids on my channel and the next time I have to do a ballpoint I will be committed to refilling this so that everyone can see how ridiculously easy it is to do this job.

did you take a close look at the ball joint to make sure there isn't a snap ring on your version that is preventing it from being pounded out?

Turn the castle nut upside down. Don't beat your components, use a fork, they're stupid cheap.
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 9 жыл бұрын
yep that is another way to prevent the castle nut from getting mangled. I've always had bad luck with pickle forks so I've opted to use a ball joint separator as I usually don't ruin the boot on a ball joint using that.

+DUNN RITE I'm actually hitting the nut with not much force at all - done moreso to just loosen the tie rod from the knuckle. It was very stubborn and hitting the the knuckle wasn't quite enough to break it free. I do emphasize quite clearly in the video not to pound away at the nut. What I should've done was put a caption at the bottom of the screen to emphasize the fact that I'm not really pounding on that nut. I'll keep that in mind for next time.

You lost me when you started pounding on the ball joints to break the connection. You have a ball joint separator, why didn't you use it on the tie rod/ UCA and save the whole process lots of unneeded hammering and cussing...? That tool is one of the most used of my general suspension tools, and not too pricey. Every DIYer should have one. Also, as per Honda shop manual, only use a rubber/ plastic mallet on the drive axle end so as not to potentially damage the wheel bearing from impact force. Otherwise, a good video.

@piercedasian 8 жыл бұрын
+douglas747wct Sorry this wasn't my best video as it was actually a struggle to film hence why there are sections that should've been included in the video. The reason why you do not want to use a ball joint separator on the tie rod ends is b/c it isn't necessary. Tie rod ends are very easy to pop out by a few light smacks with a hammer (as exactly performed in my video). The issue when using a separator is that I've found the rubber grease boot tears far too easily (maybe my separator is too big) so rather than damaging the tie rod end boots I opt to give them a few smacks and they often come out with very minimal effort. The ball joint on the other hand I was pounding out b/c that's how you remove them and if you're in a pickle to get them back in a few carefully placed hits will also get them back in. NORMALLY I would use a ball joint press clamp to put them back in but with my luck when I was doing this vid it was damaged (the guy that used it before me screwed up the tool). However, the hammering method actually does work well and is definitely a suitable way to install a ball joint if you have no other option to get them in. The video looks like I'm hammering hard but I can assure that I'm a lot gentler than my video shots suggest. To be honest with you I think I dislike this video the most b/c it isn't completely representative of how I NORMALLY would present the fix. Thanks for that feedback nonetheless, I'm always looking to hear from others on how to improve things. Thanks for watching!

sorry, this specific vid wasn't one of my better ones as i was the sole cameraman and I was struggling to find my tripod that day. If I ever do a ball joint job again I am committed to remaking this vid to show all the detailed steps. My sincerest apologies.

jayr soriano My apologies Jayr - I agree that in this specific video I didn't show myself banging the ball joint in/out b/c I didn't have a helper to hold the camera while I was doing the work. Sucks when I can't quite author the video in the manner that I would for my others videos. Believe me when I say that I try my best to provide high quality content and admittedly this isn't anywhere near the quality of my other DIY vids. Sorry it wasn't up to your expectations.
