@South Main Auto Repair LLC I know you didn't need to use it in this repair, but you mentioned an air hammer adapter for ball joints in the knuckle. This is how my Tacoma is set up. Changing ball joints out of the knuckle is a major pain with a standard press. You wouldn't happen to have a name or a link for that adapter, would ya?

Off the replace several ball joints. As well as tie rod ends and front axels, sway bars. Every boot is ripped on the odyssey I’m working on.

It's a packed episode! You get Mr. O. turning a wrench the wrong way, Mrs. O. in the shop, innuendos about putting it in, taking it out, and making sure it goes in straight ("that's what she said!"), comparing NAPA to Dorman (Dorman: "Hold my beer, I'm gonna make the part even cheaper and worse), AND changing a ball joint on a Hondoo Odyssey! Now I don't feel so bad turning a wrench the wrong way when I'm 45 degrees to the wrong side of reality and upside down, trying to do something I probably shouldn't even try doing. BUT WAIT! You also get Mr. O. speaking fake Japanese, and asking NAPA NOT to become a sponsor! All this on a Saturday? Amazing! :)

In the old days, I've changed many a ball joint by beating the heck out of the stud to remove it, then put a jack stand under the new joint and let the car down with the jack to have the car's weight press it in! This is why I don't miss the old days!

Finn Balor True enough. But there are also many where the entire control arm must be replaced or have other issues that make the job more difficult. I’m actually not a huge Honda fan boy but they do seem to try a bit harder to make their vehicles easier to work on than most.

@@sharedknowledge6640 what I've always found is Honda's really good at taking an existing idea whether it be their own or from another manufacturer and really polishing it and perfecting it I'll give you an example variable valve timing was introduced by Fiat in the 1960s and didn't really go into Vehicles till the 1980s then there was Honda that came out of left field and learned how to perfect it now every car has VVT

Finn Balor Honda engineering is hard to beat. There’s a KZfaq video of a guy changing a head gasket on a 500+ HP turbo Integra in a parking lot at an event in under an hour. Try that on most cars. When you can get 400+ HP reliably out of a Honda 4 banger with a stock lower end that says a lot. Toyota had the old Supra 2JZ inline 6 that was similarly over engineered but they’ve not done nearly as well with most of their other engines.

I was just talking to my NAPA rep about the chassis parts. He said they had a change in we’ll call it upper management. I just bought a NAPA chassis ball joint and it looked and felt like the old ones they sold.

Eric O / South Main Auto videos really paid off for me this week. First up, I replaced a brake line that had rusted out on my Focus. First time working with NiCopp (yup, it is absolutely amazing to work with. I have NEVER made a brake line that actually looked exactly like the original before! so thanks for tip number 1 there) and I was using a cheap bubble flaring tool because it was all I could get on short notice, and my old school 45 degree double flare kit just won't work on the Ford. My first attempt at making the line, one of my flares leaked. Of course, we didn't find this out until I had installed it, and put fluid back in the master. I quick had my son hold the brake pedal down, while I removed the leaking line, made up a new one, and installed it. Thanks for tip number 2, so nice to NOT have the entire reservoir of new fluid just pour out all over my car while I was making the new line up. Second try worked like a charm. Tip number 3, I gravity bled the front brake after employing tip number 4, when the bleeder won't crack open easily, try tightening it a touch first, then loosening it up. I almost couldn't believe that the 14 year old NY bleeder screw cracked loose without breaking . . . same can be said for the flare nuts on the brake line. If that wasn't enough, the son in law comes to me today with a check engine light on. Codes are for lean condition in both banks. We hook up the code reader, head into live data, see the O2 readings quite low, and I can feel that the engine isn't terribly happy at idle, so I says to him increase the RPM's for me up to around 3k to 4k. As he revs it up, I see the O2 readings steadily climbing, from near 0 (.012 on one side, and .02 on the other) up to 0.8. Ok, we're done here. You have a vacuum leak, go find it. Turns out, there were two. The clamp that is supposed to hold the intake tube onto the throttle body was just kind of dangling around doing not much of anything, and a rubber elbow was split half way around (of course, the BOTTOM half where you can't see it). From problem, to diagnoses, to problem solved in a matter of minutes. I absolutely would not have even known where to start with that diagnosis if not for your videos. Thanks to you, instead of bumbling about with it for who knows how long, I quickly, and confidently went straight to the problem, verification, and solution. This is why I watch South Main Auto! Oh, yeah, and one other thing, I managed to strip the forcing screw and nut on my Harbor Freight wheel bearing press kit, and thanks to you, knew already that I could buy the OTC version off the web, and have a pretty decent setup for not a whole lot of money. So, I don't know, I've lost count as to how many of your tips helped me out this week, but I think you should probably just go ahead and send me a bill for your services lol.

It’s interesting how different repairs are in the Rust Belt. I’m down South, and we almost never have salt on the roads. People here ignore their suspension until it breaks. I don’t, but I have a bad back. I notice every vibration.

I did this job on my 04 a while back. Pro tip, if you're replacing the whole control arm (easier for the regular home mechanic) and you cannot get the ball joint off the knuckle, take a spindle socket to get the driveshaft out of the way, rest the knuckle on a jack, and give that darn ball joint your all with your favorite hammer. Eventually it'll come out. I had to do this because the ball joint came out of its socket on the control arm and was *very* stuck to the knuckle.

Very true about napa chasis ball joints did a 4runner a few weeks ago customer brought two entirely diferent ball joint and the boxes were identical 🤷🏽‍♂️ Only problem with the astro ball joint press was the fact the toyota cupa are not included had to imrpovise.

Great service job as usual, the specifics about the 555 suspension parts are particularly helpful. We haven't seen this brand in our area just yet (the lower region of NY) but are going to ask around for them next time we need front end components.
