Went to toyota dealer for my 99 corolla, they said it was going to be $580. ($300 starter, rest labor). Decided to look up videos and prices for starters, and thank god. took me around 5hours, which included a trip to home depot, and then another trip later to advance auto parts to buy extensions etc. Sure i used 5hrs of my day but i saved so much money with some effort. Never worked on a car before or do anything with tools. FYI, advance autoparts does free starter check and you can borrow tools for free in case $$$ for tools is an issue. thank you so much for this video!

I just did it took me an hour if that. You don't need to even lift the car. It is a lot easier going in from the top. Take out the fan assembly by removing the 2 10mm bolts, the overflow tank hose and the fan plug with the 2 zip ties that hold the wire to the fan shroud. Then simply lift and wiggle out the fan shroud. you have access to the 3 bolts you need right there.

good work! manage to do it myself with basic tool. Took 4-5 hours. Save myself $500 if taken to auto shop!! the thing I needed was a jack and stands so I can get under. my corolla show sign of clicks and almost got stuck at the parking lot. took 4 try to finally start it and drove home. I knew the starter was going bad and it can die any day. wasn't going to take the chance. I spend $190 for the jack/stand kit and starter. starter test out bad... you don't have to remove oil filter, wiggle it's way out and around the pipe, it will get out.

The starter on my 1999 Toyota Corolla had been clicking for few months now and I wanted to repair it after this Covid-19. However, today the starter completely died and now it doesn't even make a clicking noise. As directed in this video, I removed the battery etc and tried removing the bolts but given its a 21 year old car, the nuts and bolts have just been jammed in. Any tips? Or any recommendation on finding a cheap mechanic in New Jersey who may have the right tools to remove these jammed nuts?

I had a hard time with getting the top bolt back in, but that's mostly because I was trying to get it started with the socket and extension. If you jam your hand in there and get it started it isn't a horrible ordeal. I bought a kit with plunger, contacts, washers and screws and such but just ended up using the two contacts and the plunger. So next time around I'd just get that kit instead(oh, I repaired the starter, instead of buying a new one). If I were to do it again it would go way smoother, but you can say that basically about anything you fix on your car after the first time.

When your on Drive (forward) position which wheel is working ..is it the left front wheel or the right front wheel on Toyota Corolla 1998 ?
@brobinson8614
@brobinson8614 5 жыл бұрын
Chris Victoria it’s meant to be both, as often both front wheels spin on a slippery surface. But I’ve seen plenty of single wheels spin too especially if stuck. There’s some sort of differential in a front wheel drive too so if one wheel gets grip then it slows right down and pulls the car forward. However if stuck and only one wheel is spinning, I was told that if you slowly pull the handbrake up (on rear wheel drive) you can get the spinning wheel to slow and then the wheel thats not spinning starts to move. It’s quite hard to do because you need to keep just enough power to prevent from stalling but not enough power to spin the wheels, plus not enough brakes to stop it either. The aim of that technique is to get both wheels to slowly turn to pull the vehicle out. (as fast spinning wheels don’t grip) I’ve tried this on several vehicles including front wheel drives (foot gently on the brake pedal). And it’s only partially effective, only slightly helping, but never enough. And often doesn’t work. Usually you’re too stuck anyway. Also not good for the brakes clutch and engine to try more than a couple 5 second attempts. If you notice no movement then get a friend to help tow it out. Or let the tyres down to low as possible pressure but not flat as you still want to drive after. As a low pressure tyre has a wider contact area, plus grips more that a hard tyre Bits of old carpet on boards helped once. Rocking forward and back with quick clutch grabs on and off helps too. Anyway that info is for anyone really.

NutzAboutBolts I completed the job this morning. My biggest worry was where to put the jack stands. I jacked up the car just behind the front tires, just behind the notches. Put the jack stands where the notches are. That worked fine. I didn't want to put on a dirty oil filter, so I bought a new one, which meant an oil change while I was at it. Your instructions were great, and the only real difficulty I had was getting the top starter bolt back in. Once that was in the rest was a breeze. Thanks again for the video. I look forward to doing struts and tie rod ends next. One of the front wheels wobbles too, and I need to figure that out.

Thanks for the video. I bought my car a 2002 Chevy Prizm...(which we all know is the same as the Corolla) for a WHOPPING...are you ready for this???>..... $200.00. yup 200 bucks for a Beautiful solid machine. the previous owner was a junkie, who simply wanted her next fix. Well the Starter was acting up and instead of having her mechanic father simply put in the wrench time, she opted for some quick cash. When I showed up to check out the car (Ive previously seen the car multiple times since she worked where my woman works) the starter was constantly crankin. If the battery terminal was connected, it was crankin as if you were turning the key. when disconnected it stopped obviously due to lack of power to the unit. Welp i hand over the cash, get the title, had a friend touch the terminal long enough to turn the motor over and pull it back off. I decided id take the risk and attempt to make it the 12 miles home without the battery connected. yeah....... I made it 10 miles lol before the car said yeah buddy nice try...NOW FIX ME lol so I attempt to do the same trick of turning the car over and disconnecting the battery again to make it the remaining distance home where i planned to swap the starter the following week since the car was not my primary vehicle. yeah ummm.... something about running the car outta juice seemingly corrected the starter issue. it magically was functioning fine as if nothing ever happened. SOO after a few errands that afternoon with my GF in my truck tailing me in case of what I was sure to be a failure of some sort.....Nothing. nope no issues. so we ran the car like this another 3 months as her DD until on occasion you would turn the key and just get the dreaded single CLICK. after a few turns of the key it usually would turn over and VVWAHLAAAA scooting along. welp it finally kicked the bucket this morning. it will still start, after about 20 attempts at starting lol so i grabbed a new starter from Advance Auto on my way home from work tonight for 90 somethin bucks with a 22$ core charge. ive installed many of these over the years on mine and others vehicles, however was beyond frustrated at the location of the top bolt. not being able to at all get a visual of it pissed me off beyond words earlier when I gave it a glance over so i could knock it out in the morning in the daylight. was glad to find your video showing you can indeed get the top bolt off wothout habing to get eyes on ...OR pull a bunch of other shiiooootttt out to do so.

These starters can be rebuilt with a Dorman starter re buld kit for around 15.00. There is a video here on you tube that will show you how to rebuild them. This may help you save some money from buying a new starter.
@NutzAboutBolts

+Justin May yeah you can do that, usually the start contact prongs are the cause of the problem. Over time the contact prongs get worn down and it's not getting the connection that you need.

you don't have to remove the intake. If you take off the intake boot then get an extension and (optional) a swivel head ratchet, you can get at the upper bolt from near the battery. , Under the "collector" for the intake manifold

I'm very new to car repairs, and under Torque specs you have a torque wrench listed ..is this another tool I will need to buy, I assume it is,..but I'm not sure why it's not listed under tools but under torque specs instead. sorry for the noob question
@NutzAboutBolts
@NutzAboutBolts 7 жыл бұрын
yes its another tool you can use if need be, I didn't listed in the tool section because sometimes you can hand tighten certain parts if you know what you're doing. If you don't, then I would suggest the torque wrench so you don't over torque the bolts and break them.

under the torque wrench you have 29ft ft lbs, but when i click on the link for amazon they say its 30-250 inch lbs and not ft lbs... is this a mistake on your end, or have you maybe linked to the wrong tool ?
@NutzAboutBolts
@NutzAboutBolts 7 жыл бұрын
Rittmanite you can convert inch lbs to ft. lbs. 12 inch lbs = 1 ft. lbs.
@Rittmanite
@Rittmanite 7 жыл бұрын
okay, but you want 29ft lbs and the one advertised is Torque range 30 to 250-Inch pounds and 250 divided by 12 is 20.8 ..but i guess under 29ft lbs is what we would need so we don't break them ..right ?

Anybody having problems with the top bolt the one you need to use an extension to recover not threading in after the new starter has been put in

Maybe with a power tool you could force it back into form. I did this putting on my new alternator. Add an extension if need be. I myself am trying to replace my starter. I pulled out my battery. I am about to remove my radiator and fan to avoid going under the car since it's on the street. Any tips???

Wow. Much more complicated than it should be. Job can be done from above by only disconnecting three electrical connections and two mounting bolts. Look for better directions on you tube. Best video I have seen is under 4 minutes long. Needs some special tools but is pretty easy and straightforward.

Top bolt is impossible to find and bottom bolt is seized on and there no room to get it off. And this is why I never went in to become a mechanic. I get way to frustrated when companies don't design things a litter better so things are so stupid hard to do yourself.

I did not have to takeoff my oil filter or splash guard in order to get the starter out or the new one back in. I would not take the extra time to takeoff either of these items especially not the oil filter which will require you to put more oil back into the car and just have things get a little messier than they have to be.

The top mounting bolts is impossible to find. Got my fingers in there - nothing. Cannot find it with the extension either. Great job F-ing Toyota. Toyota sucks ! F them. The starter on a '96 Honda Civic is a piece of cake. Right on top of trans. Super easy. I miss my '96 Civic. Everything was so easy to fix on that car. Toyota is the opposite. Gonna sell my Toyota.
