1998 Ford F150 Alternator Replacement

Had to replace the alternator on a Ford F150 4.6 V8 engine. No matter what vehicle these engines are in, installations are nearly all the same.

Thank you for this video! I replaced my alternator yesterday following the directions in this video. :) Before that the only "work" I have ever done on any vehicle was change a light bulb. Thanks for saving me hundreds of dollars!!!

Very helpful for me! I was leery of jumping into this after watching a different video, but yours broke it down so well. Thanks for the captions and clear images! Um, the Christmas light thing at the end was a bit...awkward. Very brave, though!

Thanks! Doing that came in handy when the serpentine belt shredded when I was on my way home from work about a year later! Wife brought me a new one and it took about 5 min to replace it. Back on the road! haha.

Should be the same for 97 4.2L ?

I don't know for sure. If the alternator is in the same place, I would tend to say "yes", but I'm no mechanic and there could be some differences. The general procedure is the same, disconnect the battery, replace the alternator and reconnect the battery. Swapping out the pulley was interesting. Let me know how it goes!

Great video I know that it's old but I had a mechanic replace my alternator on my truck and he got lazy instead of doing what you did he took the radiator hose off of the thermostat mounting and cause antifreeze to go into my spark plugs now it's misfiring and he claims that he didn't spill any antifreeze into my spark plugs that thermostat area is right just above the spark plug well I would never let him work on my truck again😢

Thanks! Oh man, been there! I've had my radiator hose blow off a couple of times, replaced the cap and it hasn't happened since. Seems to be a common problem. Fingers crossed. Hope you get that fixed soon if you haven't already.

The new alternator I got only has 6 grooves but my belt is 8. What can I do?

You may have to swap out the pulley from the old alternator to the new one. It's a little bit of a pain.

Are you sure you got the right replacement alternator? Might call the place you go it from (or another store) to see if they come up with the part number they gave you. As long at the shaft size is the same, you should be able to swap the pulley. There is an automatic belt tensioner so pulley diameter doesn't have to match exactly, but should be close.

What if the battery doesn't charge after the new alternator is back in place. Changed mega fuse as well

Make sure you don't have any wires hanging loose you forgot to reconnect, but that kinda points to the alternator not being the real problem. The battery could be too low or bad. You can take it to a battery store and have them charge/load test it. Corroded or worn cables could also be a cause. Finally, the replacement alternator could be bad.
