1998 Martin J-40
Martin's are widely known for their Dreadnoughts.. AKA.. The D-28's.... The D-35's.... The D-18's... Etc...
However, there is "Dark Horse" in the Martin lineup called the "J" Series... Underrated... and Under-appreciated...
IMO.. This Martin J-40 is the most well-rounded and balanced guitar in the Martin guitar lineup... Not as boomy as a Martin Dreadnought..... Not as hefty and bulky either... Just right in the middle..
To me, it is the perfect size to play both sitting down and standing.. Kind of like a slightly enlarged Martin OM body shape..
But the price point is $4000.... Let me repeat... $4000..... For a guitar....
With that amount of money, you could buy a used Toyota Corolla....
So is this Martin guitar truly worth the $4000 price tag?

I have owned one of these for 25 years. JC-40 same guitar except it has a cutaway thus the "C" in JC. Purchase price 25 years ago $2500.00

I have a 1995 J40 purchased new for 1700. (In 1995). I have a more than a dozen other guitars including another Martin, a Taylor, a Rhode Island Guild 12 string, and some others. Nothing sounds like a J40. I recently had it in the shop because the binding had come loose. When I sat down and played it after being away from it for a few weeks a felt overwhelmed with sound. I like other guitars for other reasons…mostly comfort. It’s a big guitar. The neck on the current neck has been widened and the bracing is changed. I have no problem with the neck. So if I sold it today I’d get more than twice what I paid after 25 years playing it. Not bad.

You should try Elixir Medium Light strings or Ernie Ball Earthwoods. Those 2 are probably the best acoustic guitar strings I’ve used personally. It’ll pair nicely with the J-40 too

Amazing how small and tinny your recording made this guitar sound. I bought a 1995 J-40 about two hours ago. They sound a whole lot bigger with a much deeper tone. Just for reference, I tried a couple Collings, other Martins and a Bourgeois Banjo Killer before buying the J-40 because it sounded so much better.

I played a used one today at a guitar store for the first time. It played like butter so smooth. The action was perfect, low and very easy to play. Overpriced for the condition though. I'm not sure what year it was. Had several long scratches on the front body i noticed right off the bat and the tuners were oxidized, discolored from sweat or something. Definitely was played a lot. Sounded and played great though. Don't think i'd ever pay $3K for it though in that condition.
