Tubby Smith looks to guide the Wildcats to their 2nd title in 3 years. I do not own or profit from this video.

Rick Majerus was such a good guy and a great coach. I miss seeing him around the college basketball world.

I watched this game back in ‘98 as a 13 yr old kid and I don’t remember us (uk) being down for so long like we were. Glad I was able to rewatch this.

How awesome was this? Tubby Smith receiving the championship trophy from his boss CM Newton.

Majerus should have rested his starters early or mid-way of the second half because the starters had tired legs due to Kentucky's depth. But give credit to players like Evans, Mills, and Sheppard for making big shots in the comeback.

astute assessment. kentucky clearly had the superior squad- helluva coaching job by majerus to keep them in it.in the final analysis the kentucky program and everything that came with it was just too much of a juggernaut for tubby to handle- pitino was a better fit.. he had star power.

Jeff Sheppard and Wayne Turner should have their numbers retired. Both of them played huge roles and sacrificed a lot in those championship teams.

Turner had a very poor outside shot, I can't give him a lot of credit, Shepherd was one of my favorite players!
@stevemcintosh67114 жыл бұрын
@Roger Edgerton I don't know the game very well? Sheppard wasn't a point guard, he was a shooting guard, that's how ignorant you are of the game! Turner was the point guard! Sheppard never played the point! Tubby Smith is the coach, not Pitino!
@stevemcintosh67114 жыл бұрын
@Roger Edgerton As for MVP...that's great..he played well for 2 or 3 games to gain that title..yes he was a good defender but not a great offensive player, he was turnover prone because he often drove into situations he couldn't control! He had his moments, but he was never a great player!

Agree - especially seeing the success he achieved with Saint Louis in his final years. Unfortunately his health had become a major problem by that time so I am not sure how long he would have been there.

And another major event happened in Minnesota the day before. We had our worst March Tornado outbreak on the day before this. It is still considered a defining weather event in Minnesota.

Tubby smith should have rick Pitino on his permanent Christmas card list for leaving him a loaded kentucky team .
@stevemcintosh67114 жыл бұрын
I loved Tubby but he was wrong coach for UK, didn't want to recruit. I agree, he owes Rick Pitino for that title!

Ummm...this wasn't a very talented Kentucky team, at least by Kentucky standards. And they were overachievers, who should have lost 2 tournament games. This team wasn't "loaded" by any stretch of the imagination. To their credit, they were hard workers, grinders, and had a lot of heart. But if you remember: Pitino supposedly left Kentucky, because they weren't as talented this year as they usually were. Which is why he bolted to the NBA.

@@stevemcintosh6711 So emotional. The evidence is all around you Mac. Everyone know that most of UK's banners after 1950 are tainted. Of course that means that CBB is tainted, since UK is the blueblood of bluebloods. But it's cool Mac. 😎 l won't say it again.
