Roy Clark could absolutely shred. He was in the country music world in terms of popular music but had a massive range. I never understood that when I was young. Still not a country music fan but much respect to this man and others in the genre.

You need to search for the clip from The Odd Couple tv show in the 1970s where Roy was a guest star and played lots of stringed instruments but saved this piece for the showstopper at the end of the episode. It is very much worth seeing. It’s pure acoustic and you see his hands working all his talent and magic. The bass slap and pluck he does in that one is amazing.

The fact that he had such controlled rasgueado and even golpe with the plectrum STILL amazes me. I gave up the pick because I was not able to achieve that level of precision. It is really interesting to note that he borrows from both Classical and Flamenco traditions in such a way as to honor both but using a completely different technical approach than either. Your response and commentary were wonderful. Cheers!

Roy Clark is a mutant. lol He won the national banjo championship at age 14 and 15. From the reactions I've seen on here I would recommend Tuck and Patti's cover of Hendrix's Castles Made of Sand/Little Wing. It's quite the interpretation through his guitar playing and her vocal. Anyone who hasn't heard it should give it a listen. Need to listen to the full studio version (6 minutes). One track guitar and one track vocal.

The weirdness in the video was what was thought cool at the time. They were trying for the psychedelic look. This was long before TV and movie producers learned or care that graphics like that’s any kind of strobing can trigger seizures in people with epilepsy and other disorders. It was also before they got the reaction from the public about how incredibly annoying it was. Like when the made the picture a tiny portion of the screen, I was like “You idiots, this is a live performance by a virtuoso musician of a difficult, beautiful piece. The whole point is his playing, his picking, his chord work.!”

Jone, I discovered you through your reactions to Rush, my favourite group since I was introduced to their music at the age of 12. I love Roy Clark. Like many country music stars long ago, he played many instruments, but he played all of them very, very well (guitar, banjo, "fiddle", violin, mandolin, piano, harmonica, others I can't remember). Whether you react to the video I'm sending you or not, I KNOW you will enjoy seeing him play this on an acoustic steel guitar. It's a clip ftom The Odd Couple which was a sit-com ~ 1968. The really cool thing to see is the reaction of the 2 stars of the show. It's obvious that they had never heard him play this. As the song progresses they stop "acting" and become mesmerized with Roy Clark's skill. The smiles leave their faces and is replaced with AWE! It is really cool to see. They weren't expecting what they got😂 As I said, if you don't make a video at least watch this! Link will follow in a replay. Respectfully, Lorenzo

Was so hoping that you'd get to this reaction. Clark was the typical Country Star - a pure performer who also happened to be an incredible musician. To be honest, I can't claim to be a huge fan of the genre... but there is no denying the sheer number of incredibly talented guitarists and musicians. To be honest, and to my great surprise, I doubt that there is any greater concentration of guitar-playing talent anywhere in the world than currently resides in Nashville, TN. Looking ahead, there are a number of virtuoso recordings you might enjoy... I'd start with the 2012 Austin City Limits performance of Erik Johnson's 'Cliffs of Dover' (search 'Eric Johnson - Cliffs Of Dover - Live')

There's a concert online called One Night at The Metropolis that is a classic in which they perform my favorite version of this original song. He switches between flatpick and fingerstyle in the same song! The orignal release was guitar only on his Gravity album, but the concert version adds violin and the conversation between lead guitar and violin is divine!
