I may have missed it if they mentioned it but keep in mind, if you have the Theft Lock system in your truck, having your battery disconnected for a length of time will cause the anti- theft system to reset. When you try to start the truck, the computer will disable the fuel pump and it will try but not start - making you think something else is wrong. You will have to simply do the relearn procedure. It's easy and takes 30 minutes. Google it if you want but you basically insert the key and turn the ignition to on without turning over the engine. Leave it there for 10 minutes. Then turn the ignition to off for 10 seconds. Back to on position, then off for 10 seconds. Back on for 10 minutes, then off for 10 seconds. After 3 cycles of this, as long as your distributor is installed properly and all else is good, the truck should start. I learned this when one of my kids left a light on in my Tahoe once and I didn't drive it for a week - had to reset the security system. Future plans are to take it to a tuning shop and reprogram the computer to NOT have the anti-theft system as that system can create quite a headache if and when it malfunctions.

We thought we were going to have to pay a shop $4000 to do this job. It ended up being around $200 thanks to this video. We did break an exhaust bolt and strip a distributor screw, but other than that, a fresh oil change after the job & she fired right up with ZERO issues. Thank you. We finished the job in one weekend and he was able to take his truck to work. He works at Auto-Zone and all the fellas there were telling him the truck isn’t worth keeping for the amount it would cost to fix. A1 Auto just earned my business. Sorry Autozone

Should use old plugs when painting heads to plug holes instead of tape or paper. It's more accurate, and prevents paint from contacting the threads in the spark plug hole or creating a ridge around the edge of the taper. Cheers!

When painting the heads the color looks better and pops more if you do a primer coat first. And cleaning the heads with break cleaner and a nylon bristled brush connected to a drill will make cleaning it a lot easier and a lot less time consuming!

I understand this video assumes he is teaching back yard/ driveway mechanics but I would think on getting your local shop or dealer that has a sk tank and let the heads sit a day or two Pricing as apposed to pricing on cans of cleaner and towels. A good cold acid dip will disolve all that grit and build up and heads will come out looking new.

Here's how if you havent found out by now and this will work without a timing light, 1.Take the cap off of distributor 2.set distributor into hole make sure rotor is pointing towards farthest cylinder to the front on ur right and if it does not fully seat slowly turn the crank pulley until it drops in making sure rotor stays then if it does not go in look inside where the Dist. Goes with a flat head screwdriver and move the oil thing I forgot what is called but make sure to align it where it drops down with the rotor towards the cylinder I said and if it doesnt start turn the crank pulley 360 degrees around then it should be enough to get it started and as its idling move the dist. Left or right to get it better in time all without a timing light and also lookup a chart for the plugs or tape each one labeling it and remove just the ones connected to the engine not the dist. Hope this helps have a good day!

Great video thank you. It'b been immensely helpful. 1 question, I only removed one head to fix one cylinder valve and I set cylinder 1 to TDC before removing the head as instructed in the video. When replacing the push rods and rocker arms why do you need to adjust certain ones then rotate the engine to finish the rest? Why can you not just install and adjust them as is given they are already in the same position you removed them?
@lamborgatti-4783
@lamborgatti-4783 2 жыл бұрын
Due to the cam moving and opening and closing different valves at different times,if you trying to adjust them all on tdc and try to start it,youll most likely damage the cam lifters and pushrods,and it wont start
@texjake3
@texjake3 4 жыл бұрын
What is the difference between the right side & left side valve covers? Also I have heard that it's not wise to remove the rocker arm nuts with a air ratchet or cordless ratchet due to damaging the threads. Also when loosing & removing the head bolts, your suppose to start in the middle and work your way out, right? That's what I have always been taught.

The Power Steering Pully install 1:01:30 is not broken on that engine. A simple pully kit will pull it off but not install. I can not thank you enough for taking the time to make this video. I just finished the job on my 305. You answered questions I didn't even know I had, and explained things very well. It was a lot of work but I learned so much along the way that doing it myself was well worth the effort. Could not have done it without such and educational video, however. Or, least, it would have taken me MANY times longer.

I found that the pushrods are just short enough to fit into sandwich bags. I just label a sandwich bag for each rocker assembly and separate them that way

Cyl 6 is filling up with antifreeze and i bought some stop leak but after watching this it doesnt look too bad. I have a 1990 tbi motor so it has even less crap in the way then this engine, only thing I’m dreading is a cracked or warped head, motor has 240k but runs great so might just fix the head gasket properly

I always wipe the cylinder walls clean to get all the grit that I just sanded out of the engine. I then oil the cylinder walls, so they are lubed on stay up, then one final clean with a lint free brake clean rag.

A1 makes some of the best detailed videos thank you. One question, do you really need to remove the distributor for this job? Seems the heads will come off without it's removal or is it truly in the way? I wonder the same about some of the other items, or if some of these are just removed for clearance convenience.

I just did the job in my '98 K2500 (well, in the middle of it, truth be told) and while I took the intake manifold off to clean it up & replace gaskets, I *think* it's theoretically possible to keep the intake manifold on and only remove a head. To answer the question I had at first myself: the distributor goes *through* the intake manifold entirely, so you can't get that off without pulling the distributor out and worrying about re-aligning this ridiculous, antiquated "timing" system. It wouldn't be easy to pull a head by itself; remember to remove the intake manifold bolts on that side because they go through the head, you have to have some concern about lining up the intake gasket stuck to the side of the head at the same time as lining it up on a new head gasket, and also I'd worry about the liquid gasket staying sealed in place. But, if I ever do my other head (only did passenger side this time), I'll probably attempt this.

Hey buddy I'm sure you don't look at these comments anymore but I was just wondering where the two ground wires located on the back of the head after you put in the 14 mm bolt with the harness support thing if you still see this I would appreciate the answer Man and great video by the way
