Here is our 1st grader homeschool curriculum plan for 2023-2024! My 3rd and 4th grade curriculum videos are separate and you can find links them below. We started kindergarten in a very gentle way, and I'm excited to build on that for 1st grade. I like to remember that we could pretty much do 1st grade with a math curriculum and a library card!
While choosing curriculum for 1st grade can feel like a big deal, I've learned that it's not the end all. Each kid blossoms in their own time, and my goal is that my kids would learn to love learning. I want them to begin reading so they can enjoy books, and also do some learning independently. I want them to maximize play time. And more importantly, I want our home and relationship to be a happy one.

9:07 I’m using Math w/Conf for the first time year. I’m thinking about getting the teachers manual spiral bounded. We also splurged on those Dash readers, they’re so pretty! I found similar readers at our library. Cherry Blossom Press, Little Blossom Stories by Cecilia Minden. They are levels A, B, & C, not quite as pretty as Dash, but still super cute.

Ok thanks for the info on Cherry Blossom Press. Yes, the Dash books are def a splurge! She did a great job making them and I’m hoping to make it worth it getting to use them with 3 kids. Hope MWC goes well!

My oldest is in kindergarden and ours are very similar! Im looking into what to do next year. Right now we are doing 100 lessons to read, seton phonics, five in a row , handwriting without tears , seton math , bible stories to read. Also co op once a week. We read alot of books also! Love the video !

Sounds like a great plan with what you’re using! Since doing this video I shifted gears a bit and we decided to try out a Charlotte Mason curriculum for the kids, Ambleside Online. It’s been a fun change adding in book lists and narrations. We’re still using the 100 East lessons, math, and Handwritings Without Tears for 1st. Hope you guys have a fun year!

@LizBlueandHazel I'm also intrigued by the charolette mason style learning kind of why I used five in a row cirriculum for a gentle approach. Have a great year!

Abeka's, specifically first grade readers, are awesome. They are my favorite readers I have found so far. They are expensive but you can find them reasonably priced used

Oo thanks. I wonder if these can be found at our library? I’d love to be able to see inside and try a few.

I'm on the lookout for those Dash into Reading books for my daughter. They look so cute and I'm honestly a bit over the Bob books.

Yes the Bob books are kind of dull to me too. I'm sure they work but Dash books add that cute factor, with farm animals and adventures. I think "cute" sold me, haha!

@juliequates9529 See if your library has Cherry Blossom Press, Little Blossom Stories books by Cecilia Minden. Since you mentioned Bob books, I’ll say that I was never impressed with them. They get the job done, but I want nice illustrations for my kiddos.

I love your approach to homeschooling him. I picked a lot of the same curriculum for my first grader so that's fun🙂 when do you normally start all about Spelling with your kids, if you are still using that.
@LizBlueandHazel
@LizBlueandHazel Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Play is king here. For all about spelling, I started my 3rd grader on level 1 this year, and he flew through that and we are still working through level 2. I decided to wait to start level 1 with my next kid till 3rd grade as well. I just didn’t want to put so much effort in for spelling rules before she’d had more reading under her belt. She’s newly 8 and just starting to read a little more, so I think that will help her to “see” the words a bit better.

We're finishing 1st grade this summer. Life of Fred, Abeka Math, other math books, manipulatives, math story books, 100 Easy, Little phonics readers, lots of family read aloud, Aesop, story sequencing in composition books, handwriting practice book, and lots of field trips. Went well, but I limed Life of Fred and read alouds best for connected, Charlotte Mason style learning. Just about to finish Apples! Let us know how it goes. :)

Those sound great and similar to what we are doing! I too love the Charlotte Mason style learning and we are actually learning more about it while slowly making some changes to our year (like beginning narrations). Will do an update later this year!

So... technically I have a 1st grader...or maybe we will do a second Kindergarten year??? He is six...so idk. Reading: No "real" plan. I might start him with 100 Easy Lessons or not. I plan to see whether he wants to read ...and go from there. He currently knows his ABC sounds. *** The Dash into Reading books look fun. I might look into those 👍 Math: Easy Peasy Math level 1 and "Math Lessons for a Living Education" Level 1 Language Arts: Copy-work and narration History: "Light and the Glory: for children" & Step-Up American history book series (group work). Science: interest -led (Dinosaurs and Geology so far) Everything else: our Classical Conversations Co-op & interest -led

What a good plan, nice and simple too. This age is so precious... I just want my boy to play and keep that good imagination of his for as long as possible!

@@LizBlueandHazel Thank you! I feel like he is the hardest to plan for because he does want to do "school" because of his sisters but he also enjoys building with Legos all day (which I think is a valid educational activity). I try to balance as much as possible and leave him room to do Legos all day if he wants. We currently do one or two subjects with him (not counting Morning Basket & Lunch Basket which happens while we eat Breakfast and Lunch. The "Basket" times are were we cover Bible, History, and Read Alouds. Then also Spanish which happens afternoon usually).

Prenda Treasure Hunt Reading (THR) is great and free we use it for the youngest and Love it. After starting with Alpha-Phonics with my oldest, then 100 Easy Lessons for the second, Progressive Phonics all-in-one reading program also free for the triplets. THR was the easiest to use and get through.

@@Svargasc3 The lessons took me 15 minutes to a half an hour with a for 4 year old who knew the the letters in his name. With a five-year-old who had a year in preschool we doubled up the lessons one in the morning and one in the afternoon 15 minutes each lesson. Both were able to read readers at the end.

Math With Confidence is something I'm considering for my soon to be 2nd grader. We might go back to first grade as she doesn't seem to be progressing as much as I thought she would. I heard the teacher's guide was difficult to understand. Thoughts?
@LizBlueandHazel
@LizBlueandHazel Жыл бұрын
If you feel like you want a teachable way to go back and reinforce solid number sense and math facts, this program is great. I haven’t heard the teachers guide is hard to understand though, that’s new to me. Since it’s scripted and has a lot of pictures for setting up activities, most people I’ve talked to seem to find it very user friendly. We also use Singapore Maths home instructor guide with my oldest and I find it very hard to use compared to MWC.

Have you ever tried Alpha phonics book? We like it better than Teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons. My son got bored with 100 lessons book 📖

I've never heard of it! I'm glad there are so many options out there for learning how to read. It makes me wonder if we would like others better, but I'll probably try not to hop around since we are mid book. Thanks for your suggestion so others can see it too.

Has your discount code expired for Dash Into Learning? I typed in BLUEHAZEL20 and also tried it as bluehazel20 and both said it was not valid. Updating to say that I listened your video again and caught the "and" in the coupon code. 🤦 Thank you!
