First grade in a Waldorf school begins at seven years of age, after the change of teeth has begun. Other notable differences about a the first grade curriculum is the story aspect of each lesson, even when you present the child with her first recorder, you present it along with a story. Stories are an important part of the Waldorf curriculum. It's what connects the child to the information. The information comes to life through the story told by the teacher. You may also notice an absence of textbooks, workbooks and even picture or chapter books. There are no textbooks because the teacher teaches the material (she does her research prior to teaching), there are no workbooks because the students make their own as the lessons progress by copying the chalk drawings on the chalkboard made by the teacher and adding a sentence or two copied from the board or dictated to the student. The students make their first readers with drawings and complete simple sentences which they then read themselves. The world of numbers is also introduced with stories to complement the introduction of each number.
Does you child already know the ABC's and the numbers before entering grade one? Probably. Most kids pick them up along the way, but don't overlook this beautiful presentation of the numbers and letters, there's more to the lesson than just the technical and mechanical acquisition of the numbers and letters. The value is a deeper connection to learning and sets the foundation for how information and skills will be taught and acquired throughout the grades. There is reverence and honor in every aspect of the Waldorf curriculum, down to how the crayons are used and stored to how one transitions from one activity to the next.
The curriculum I am presenting to day is from Live-Education.

We homeschool using many different yet congruent philosophies including Waldorf, TJed, and Charlotte Mason, but use the curriculum from Live-Education for inspiration.

Storytelling & The Art of Imagination by Nancy Mellon
Healing Stories for Challenging Behavior by Susan Perrow
You Are Your Child's First Teacher by Rahima Baldwin
The Education of the Child by Rudolf Steiner

I strongly recommend azafran crayons for pictures, they blend beautifully, creating a painterly look when blended with fingers. For everything else (writing, form drawing etc) I strongly recommend not using stockmar as they are mostly petroleum (like crayola) with a little beeswax mixed in. They are also very overpriced considering what they are made of. A better alternative is filana beeswax crayons which are beeswax based and entirely organic. They are also slightly more affordable than stockmar.

Thank you for this! I get so excited when I see that you posted a new video! I never considered Live Education, but it seems like such a thorough curriculum! I had read that some homeschoolers found Live Edu. to be difficult to manage with multiple ages. I would love to hear more on how you manage homeschooling various ages. I also would be curious to see/hear how you use live education for inspiration. How do you pick the units/blocks to use. How do you decide which ones to skip? Thanks again for all the work you put into your channel!

I completely agree with other reviewers about the Live-Ed curriculum being hard to use with multiple grades. It is!! So as much as I want to do the lessons at grade level for each of my children because there is so much wisdom in the placement of each subject, I just couldn't manage it, and I was only ever homeschooling two kids (because I don't count KG and by the time my oldest was in 9th grade, he was done homeschooling), so I imagine working with 3 or more kids would be impossible with this curriculum based on how much teacher/parent involvement is needed. I manage the multiple grades by doing unit studies inspired by main lesson topics. That way I can do one lesson for multiple grades. Math and grammar are usually done independently and parallel to the unit lessons. Though there is value in having the older kids review the math and grammar that the younger kids are doing, too. I think a video on this will be helpful, so I'll add it to the queue :) Thanks for commenting and for the questions :) -Hana

Hey! I'm a student of the class 12 of Irkutsk Waldorf School (Russia) and I'm in Waldorf education since class 4, so it's been an enigma for me what Waldorf students do in classes 1, 2, 3 and especially class 1, like how it all begins, because in the last grade we are finishing everything: the last main lesson, the last Christmas and Easter fairs and stuff, but that's a bit sad that I didn't BEGIN everything along with the others. You made it clearer on what my classmates might have started with 12 years ago (though of course many things were completely different, especially learning the Russian language). Still, I really enjoyed it. THANK YOU SO MUCH :)

Hi Jacqueline, the artwork comes with instruction, but the handwork does not. I know in the future Live Ed would like to have either a supplement curriculum or video tutorials to help with that part of the curriculum, but currently there aren't step by step instructions for it.

I see sometimes in your videos that you have several other stockman watercolors. Does stockmar have a different red watercolor that is more of a true red? We have used the primary set for years, but I always have to supplement them with another watercolor for the red because the stockmar one is so pink. It's hard when the kids want to paint something like a fall leaf that is a rich beautiful deep red and there is no way to create that color with the stockmar primary paints (even straight from the bottle). I have a new kindergartener this year and I wanted to buy a new set in honor of him embarking on his homeschool journey, but I'd rather buy the colors individually if stockmar has a truer red available somewhere. Thanks!

Hi do you recomend this curriculum with kids with ieps. My son is behind speech and motor development and with coronavirus, I find it hard to take him out of his comfort zone and I get the pressure from the normal academic curriculum. He already knows a lot of what u have presented but it's not perfect because of his motor issues. So when he sees his classmates work it affects his confidence. Also, will this help him with hand strengthening??

Just stumbled upon your channel and I must say, "Thank you, thank you!" My son will be entering into first grade next year and I was considering Live Ed so it's great to see what their curriculum actually looks like. Does the curriculum introduce watercolors one at a time or is it more of experimentation with each color? My kindergartner is currently exploring each color (several sources I've read say to introduce primary colors in kindergarten) so I'm not sure if that would be repetitive material to him or not.
@PepperandPine
@PepperandPine 7 жыл бұрын
Hello! I'm so glad you are finding these videos helpful. Yes, the curriculum introduces colors one at a time starting with yellow. The repetition of of the watercolor lesson is maybe 10% of the whole watercolor curriculum, but it's a good idea to have those introductory lessons for a couple of years for both enjoyment and repetition. We just completed a project last week in which we watercolored pumpkins starting with yellow. The whole page was painted yellow with a lot of water. Next, we drew the pumpkins using red and watched as it turned orange. Then we added blue to make leaves watching again as it mixed with the yellow. Last we combined all three colors for the stem. In that way, the introductory lesson is part of the whole lesson. -Hana

@PepperandPine
@PepperandPine 7 жыл бұрын
The beeswax is so nice to work with, but if you are not careful like we are sometimes ;) it will get on the carpet. Little pieces end up separated from the main chunk and can get embedded all over the place. Also, you'll want to remind the kids not to roll it on the table, unless you want a waxy residue! I first learned how to knit from a friend, but now I use KZfaq to help me when I forget how to cast on or off or do a basic stitch. -Hana

I'm so fascinated by all of this. I would love to know a few things if you wouldn't mind (you probably have a video on this that I missed). How does this work with your charter? I know you pull random worksheets to turn in. Do you just pick a random activity? The other question I have is how do you incorporate this with the core subjects of language arts and math. History and science seems easy to supplement as I've seen you do with amazing unit studies but I'm struggling with the other two subjects. I guess I'm talking more about mechanics. I hope this makes sense?

Hi Miki! How to work with the charter school while doing a curriculum that's atypical is a good question. The short answer is that our teacher takes what we are learning and fits it into the state standards rather than the other way around. At a minimum, you need one sample that fits somewhere in the standards for K-8th. (high school standards are anywhere from 9th-12th, so my 9th grader is doing 9th-11th grade material because those are the subjects we chose). So you might wonder, how do the younger years work if kids are only learning the letters of the alphabet at 7 years old. The state standards include a lot of skills that are not academically sensitive like knowing make-believe from reality and understanding the context of words, so those are the standards that our teacher can mark with ease until the academics kick in and there is more to show for the standards. As fors what to turn in, it's never a problem for my kids once they hit about 2nd or 3rd grade, before then, we do sometimes scramble for something since there is very little written work. My daughter, though, likes to write and draw (write as in copy letters and words), so I imagine that will be a little easier. I'm answering the second part of your question below...
@PepperandPine
@PepperandPine 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Seal459! Also a good question! So if we assume that all of science and history are taught once to all grades in my homeschool, that leaves behind reading, writing and arithmetic. There is a substantial amount of writing in our history and science units, so I don't focus on writing as a subject. The kids write narratives and summaries almost daily, so they have a regular opportunity to practice writing, grammar and spelling. Each child writes according to his ability, gradually increasing length and complexity as he gets older. Math is also done separately, but minimally. I keep math simple and focus on the basic operations increasing in difficulty to include fractions and decimals. From K-8th, I leave out statistics, graphing, area, volume, tricky word problems, and algebra. The kids practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division for whole numbers, fractions, decimals and integers. The lessons are generally short, independent of other subjects and sometimes oral not written. Math runs parallel to the unit studies. You can add in a little spelling or vocabulary or other short lessons daily, too. We like to read daily either a poem, fairy tale, fable, or picture book, etc. -Hana

Hi Rosario! I agree, this is quite a departure from the traditional method. One of the perks of home education is getting to choose from the variety that's out there. Since we all have different needs and goals, choosing one curriculum/method over another means you're choosing what's right for your family. It may not always be the right one (things change), but choosing one, doesn't mean you're passing judgement on the others. I say this for everyone and myself :) Lessons from Grade 1 will be posted on my website; I may not have many videos for Grade 1 right now. When I post the first one, I'll be sure to come back here and post a link for you. -Hana

Is it bad that I've watched this video at least 3x already and will likely watch it many more times😀😀😀. Thank u so much for sharing and doing the walk through of both K and First grade curricula Very timely b/c I have been trying to compare LiveEd & Christopherus curricula and had recently reviewed the same first reader sample lesson on LiveEd's website. I have to say w my very limited Waldorf experience, reading through the curricula can be intimidating (very intimidating actually) I totally get what you mean about having to "bring it" I think I would get stuck transferring the curriculum into real daily lessons. I hope that makes sense. Would be helpful to see how you take the dense prose curriculum and create your weekly plan. Kind of like a "plan with me video"
@PepperandPine

I feel you on this, I had years of trouble trying to translate the curriculum into daily lessons. I did it all wrong in the beginning! Though we are not doing first grade this year, I did share the curriculum, but I won't have lessons to share until 2 years from now! But in the meantime, I'll write blog posts on the lessons we've done in the past. We took the letters of the alphabet and used the stories of the previous prophets as the story to accompany the letter rather than a fairy tale. Then I drew pictures from the stories like the curriculum shows, but I changed them. I would draw a snake like an 'S' to accompany the story of Musa and the magicians. The lessons would proceed like this: Tell the story of the previous prophet, draw the picture on the chalkboard, child copies drawing into his main lesson book, write capital letter on board and child copies it into main lesson book. Traditionally, that lesson would be split up into three days, but I found that a little hard to accomplish. -Hana

@PepperandPine 7 жыл бұрын
Haha, Sandra, I learned from a friend then forgot then learned again from videos then forgot!!! I only know the basics, and only recently learned to purl, which I already forgot. The problem is I'm not a knitter, so if I'm not keeping it up, I'm forgetting. Plus I only know how to do a rectangle! But the basics are all you need in the beginning. The children design their own creations from what they knit (with a little help from the teacher), so there are no patterns. What grade of Christopherus did you purchase? I've been trying to do a comparision video, but the company doesn't lend out the curriculum for that purpose, and I can't buy it just to do a review. I'm getting a hold of an Oak Meadow one for that purpose. But now that you've seen through Grade One of Live-Education, what makes you want to switch? -Hana

Hi Hana, Thank you for responding to my question. I have learned once from a friend and forgotten as well. And have tried to learn from watching KZfaq videos....Guess I need to try that again. Recently got a Melissa and Doug Loom for my first grader and We Love it! It is a beautiful and simple piece, Nice that we can use our own Wool as well. I have Grade One Christopherus Curriculum + Purchased some of their Supplemental First Grade Books as well , "Joyful Movement", "Form Drawing" amongst others. I appreciate how the Live Education is 8 separate books, and they seem to be more in depth with the "Waldorf Artwork" and lessons than the Christopherus. I like that LE has more color as well. I am hoping I can manifest a small miracle in the form of $500 to be able to purchase the LE Curriculum. If you know of anyone trying to sell a used one, I am interested. I recently found your channel when you posted a picture of your Lovely Chalk Drawing in Lanterns Light Coop Group or Waldorf Life. And thank you so much for inspiring me and helping me remember I am not alone in this journey! Thank you for sharing all of your supplemental project ideas with us as well, As I am glad to remember to not be "too strict" Waldorf, i.e. the Sarcophagus Kits, etc. :) also the Nature Kits you reviewed. Anyways thanks again! -Sandra

For the curriculum you could try Waldorf essentials or try to put it together yourself. You could buy a few books like form drawing, teaching math and Waldorf schools grade one through eight and teach teaching drawing in Waldorf schools grade 1 through eight, and then the last book you could use is roadmap to literacy. I think that would get the main parts of grade one, and then you could introduce knitting as well.

Gilden Matos awe what a kind comment 😊 so the ages are roughly 5-7 years for KG and 7 for 1st grade. But you could be 6 1/2 starting first grade. My daughter will be 6 1/2 in the fall and we're going to do KG for most of the school year with a slow intro to some of the first grade subjects. For instance, I'll begin with some form drawing and maybe by the end of the year when she's seven, I'll have introduced the letters. I only caution moving ahead because a child exhibits one area of understanding because the ages coordinate with development not acquisition of information and skills.

Hi Meredith, this particular curriculum doesn't allow resale. There's a notation on the first page of each saying that the curriculum is just intended for the family who purchased it. I happen to own Grade One, but some of other grades I have actually belong to our charter school, so I don't even own them. Best of luck to you on your curriculum journey :) -Hana
