Description: Any apprentice wizard can cast a boring old magic missile. Sure, it always strikes its target. Yawn. Do away with the drudgery of your grandfather’s magic with this improved version of the spell, as used by Jim Darkmagic!
You create three twisting, whistling, hypoallergenic, gluten-free darts of magical force. Each dart targets a creature of your choice that you can see within range. Make a ranged spell attack for each missile. On a hit, a missile deals 2d4 force damage to its target.
If the attack roll scores a critical hit, the target of that missile takes 5d4 force damage instead of you rolling damage twice for a critical hit. If the attack roll for any missile is a 1, all missiles miss their targets and blow up in your face, dealing 1 force damage per missile to you.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the spell creates one more dart, and the royalty component increases by 1 gp, for each slot level above 1st.

This is pretty cool spell. I think my favorite part is that a crit does more than just double the damage die. I don’t believe I’ve seen that on a spell before

Best part is, Its the evocation wizards best friend. The Evocation wizards level 10 ability allows you to add your int modifier to EACH missile, confirmed by Jeremy Crawford!

@@ChancesSpellbook At level 10 it deals a minimum (assuming you've maxed out your int by then) of 7 force damage PER missile. For a total of 21 points of force damage from a First level spell.

Best thing is Force Damage, no one have Resistance or Immunity besides one creature. Either way, this best thing take any creature down.

My only gripe is that boring old magic missile is better for evokers, as they can add their modifier to each dart. Jim's is worded in such a way that the evoker's damage bonus only applies to one.

@Rotti Newish player here, so not sure, but I think they might have been talking about the evoker wizard's "Empowered Evocation" feature, which adds the caster's Intelligence modifier to one damage roll... As I understand it you only roll the 1d4 once for classic Magic Missile (applying the result of that roll to all the darts), as opposed to this version which has you roll separate attacks and damage for each missile. (I look forward to someone replying to this message in one year's time, to continue the chain 😄)

So you trade material cost (1gp) and ranged attack (including the fail option) vs. automatic hits but you can generate more damage (6-24 vs. regular 6-15). Interesting option...

What about Assassin(3) and Wizard(1, for starters). During a surprise round, you have advantage on attack roles and all hits crit.

Great spell for kobolds and halflings since advantage from pack tactics and lucky to reroll 1s will make it highly unlikely to roll a 1. If you have hex it will activate for each missile.

I did it. I optimized the sh*t out of this spell! Race: Halfling (Lucky guarantees that if we roll a 1 we can re-roll, and it's not once per turn) Class: Fighter (champion) Lv4 / Wizard (Evocation) Lv15 / Warlock (hexblade) Lv1 Hexblade's curse will improve our damage by +6 on each dart (assuming Lv20) The Evocation wizard brings empowered evocation, wich is a +5 on 1 dart. It's not alot but it's there. We are here for the Overchannel, allowing us to deal maximum damage with the spell! So now every beam deals exactly 20 damage Now, for the real combo. The Zac to our Cody, The Kennan to our Kel, The Finn to our Jake... Hold person! The paralisation condition makes you insta crit! And you have advantage on all of the spell attacks, so the chance of rolling a 1 goes from 5% per beam to 0,25% per beam (and that's without lucky) The advantage alone is enough justification to spend a 9th level on Jim's magic missiles, because the blow up chance of 11 darts with advantage combined is 2,75%, that is lower than a single dart without advantage, and again, we have lucky from halfling! Also, Champion fighter's improved critical works with Jim's magic missiles, so you don't need to rely on hold person or Hexblade's curse to have a viable damaging spell. Improved critical with advantage means that our chance to crit is 19% *per beam*. Just upcast Jim's magic missiles to the max any time you have advantage You may be asking "how much damage is that?" The answer is: exactly 26 per beam, assuming a crit. You can use the spell slot you prefer ;3

Allow me to retort... ;) If you do not have auto crit/Advantage, regular Magic Missiles will deal more damage(because Empowered Evocation works on every dart of standard Magic Missile). Similarly, if you cant guarantee crits, Scorching Ray will generally deal more damage if Hexblade Curse is not active. If you are certain that you will crit, then the combination of Hexblade Curse and JMM on a big baddie is pretty sweet though. Which is why I have made this monstrosity: High Elf(because of Elven Accuracy later) Assassin(3), Wizard(1) = Great early game blaster on surprise rounds(advantage when you attack someone who hasnt had a turn in the combat yet, so very low chance to roll a 1. Every hit on a surprise round is a crit). Uses a dagger otherwise(+2d6 sneak attack is still decent, and you can use cantrips like Booming Blade if need be and bonus action to Disengage or Hide). So at level 4, that is 3(5d4) on turn one(if you have scouted properly and get the Surprise round). Continue on with Wizard until level 8(so 5 levels in Wizard by this point). We pick Chronurgy Magic(Bonus to Initiative, can force some rerolls). This gives us more spell slots to work with, additional utility and level 3 spells(a bit delayed, but still good). The feat we take at Wizard 4 is Elven Accuracy(increase Intelligence) so that whenever we have advantage, we are not very likely to get a 1(and more likely to crit too). We then take 1 level in Warlock(character level 9) to really focus down big baddies, which allows us to use a +4 prof. mod now. At level 10, we take 8 levels in Fighter(Rune Knight), so now we are level 17. This gives us 3 Runes(Cloud Rune to copy an attack onto a different target, and Storm Rune for forcing Disadvantage on enemies as a reaction for 1 entire minute, plus a Rune of your choice), Action Surge(2 actions during a Surprise Round) and 3 ASI/Feat increases. The added health and armor proficiency is not bad either(a breastplate will be better than any light armor at this point). The last 3 levels depends on what you want to do. 3 more levels in Wizard(total of 8) gives an extra ASI/Feat, some more spells and spell slots, an extra spell level(greater Invisibility is tempting) and the Chronurgy's 6th level ability is a pretty decent "get down here" against fliers(without using a spell slot). Going for 3 levels in Warlock(total of 4) allows for Invocations, an extra Warlock spell slot and powerlevel, a Pact and an ASI/Feat. These levels could also be added at an earlier point or mixed in other ways. This character focus on surprise round burst damage, sustainable combat without relying on spells, minor spell utility, fairly reliable disables, and boss nuking, making you fairly flexible in battle. Both HP and AC is pretty decent, there are several options for your bonus action and reaction, and you have some decent skills and proficiencies.

A Halfling could make good use of Jim’s Magic Missile, because they reroll 1s! 🎲 The new UA Psionics Wizard gets to re-roll 1s for damage spells that cause Force or Psychic damage. They also get to add their Intelligence Mod to those damage types when they gain higher levels!

Sounds like the Magic Missile found in early printings of 4e's PHB, before WotC errata-ed it to the auto hit thing of 3.5 era. Cool! :) Magic Missile (early printing) At-Will✦Arcane, Force, Implement Standard Action Ranged 20 Target: One creature Attack: Intelligence vs. Reflex Hit: 2d4 + Intelligence modifier force damage. Special: This power counts as a ranged basic attack. Magic Missle (after errata) At-Will ✦ Arcane, Evocation, Force, Implement Standard Action Ranged 20 Target: One creature Effect: 2 + Intelligence modifier force damage. Special: If the implement used with this power has an enhancement bonus, add that bonus to the damage. In addition, you can use this power as a ranged basic attack.

A question, the spell - shield - says, you don't take damage from - magic missile, i guess that would also work against - jims magic missile - blowing up in your face right?

Newb here. Can you walk me through a roll scenario? I cant tell if I roll a D20 once or three times. And do I roll the D20 three times and then roll for all damage? Or do I handle one dart at a time so essentially 6 rolls total or just 4 throws? Also if you roll a 1 does that mean you rolled a Natural 1 with the D20? And if so, lets say I fired 3 darts, does that mean I take 3 damage? I don't know what 1 force equals other than 1 hitpoint.

As a Sorcerer, don't BA a spell and then A cantrip, that cantrip isn't going to deal heavy enough damage to be worth it. Instead, use that Action on something else, such as Disengage, or Dodge, or Dash, or what have you.

I think it’s pretty situational. Using fireball to destroy a ton of enemies, then using acid splash to clean up the stragglers is pretty neat! I do agree that it doesn’t always have to be that way though

assuming I understand your description.. Its as pell attack right? Meaning..... You can target objects which you could'nt with magic missle. soo force damage to blast something down?

Sadly not, just because it specifies it has to target creatures. The biggest difference between the two is the damage potentials, and the odds to hit!

This is certainly useful for breaking the concentration of enemy spell casters. 🚀 I like the idea of combining it with Toll the Dead. 💀 How about casting Sleep first, and then attacking with this spell? Would that give you Advantage on your attack, and increase the chance (pun intended) of a Crit? 😴

I like where your head's at! Attacking an unconscious creature would give you advantage, and if you cast it within 5ft you would get an automatic crit!
