I think that girl's voice is unique but i can tell it can get annoying sometimes since it's so squeeky lol but this was another bland performance that i didn't think was anything special either..they've got good beats though but other than that the vocals were definitely their weak point. and before anyone criticizes me of these grades, i only grade on my opinion and i just grade based on how good it sounded and if i liked what i heard =) B-

I think that adding Honey to their group was one of the reasons they lost.

Personally love them WITHOUT Honey, I feel like if they didn't have her they would have gone so much further.

You can tell she is used to solo work. She needs to learn to blend back with the group--this is not the Honey solo show with the back up crew. A lot of potential and I am eager to see how they improve, I just hope they learn to blend her in better.

Everyone has to remember that Geoff was not nearly as seasoned and polished as he is now and Honey really detracted from Voiceplay’s blend and cohesive dynamics (she seems to be on “11” like almost 100% of the time) and she really didn’t blend that great. They have come so far since this and I really love their sound now.

As a voiceplay fan. Layne kind of carried the group. The beatboxing was the only thing in my opinion that was outstanding in the group. Geoff, whilst he is good, didn't have as much of an effect as he should have, he should have had a solo to show the notes he can hit to show he is a bass not a baritone. Honey is just plain bad. Deep down everyone knew that Honey ruined the group and they tried to be voiceplay but they didn't have the bass or lead singer. She does not blend with the group and with just the five guys, the would have progressed further. Compared to now voiceplay are miles ahead but they would have maybe progressed into the finals if they got rid of Honey. If they did a home free type of thing and let Geoff lead and hit those low notes it would have been 10x better imo.

Honey is good and all. But I think the main 5 are the best and could be done better. But that's just an opinion :)

+SportRepublic101 Totally agree... I think they would stand a better chance without her. Not that she doesn't sing good, which she does.... But the group sounds better with the guys...

It makes me SO sad looking back at this to know that (IMO) Honey was the weak link...and I miss Earl.

They definitely learned a lot since then, especially Geoff. He learned a lot from Tim Foust on this to get him to the point he is today. Layne was always fantastic. If this show was still around and they went on today with the skills theyve learned since then, they'd get so far, maybe even win. Geoff could really show off what hes learned and how his range can go now. I Love Voiceplay. Its cool to see how much theyve changed over the years.

Lotta hind sight here going on. Not going to hate on anyone. Geoff wasn't in full swing yet. Remember he learned some things from Tim Faust and then he went on to work his tail off and develop the monster voice he has now. Layne was a beast, then and now.

I wondered that, as I really think (Honey aside, with or without her) Voice Play didn't showcase Geoff right off the bat the way Home Free showcased Tim. They could've blown out speakers with Geoff, whether solo or as harmony, and didn't do it. I've heard Voice Play some since then (like their rendition of "My Mother Told Me"), and they did showcase him. It would've made a big difference in how they progressed. As it was, this was nothing special, and I just didn't like what Honey "added". Just my take.

Honey really takes away from them. She has a great voice and she seems so nice but she is better off in solo work she kinda distracts from everyone else :/

Honestly in my opinion I'm looking back at it now Geoff should've hit very low notes cuz home frees tim foust was hitting low which could easily got them second

Agreed. The judges could've been talking about Geoff the way they did Tim, but they weren't. It's a shame here (glad he's done some "showcase work" in later recordings!). They could have had "Bass- Off" between Tim and Geoff (the way they did the "Beatbox- Off" between Home Free and the Filharmonic!) had they taken notice of Geoff's range. Opportunity missed, IMHO!

@Fraser Neilson That's certainly fair. I was not following the Sing-Off when it first aired, so I wouldn't know (and even knew less about Voice Play!), but if that is true, that really is a pity, because that would've been FUN! I recall Austin saying on one clip that "Tim was the only one singing that low in this competition" (direct quote), and I cocked an eyebrow-- again, in retrospect. ("Oh, really?") I love what Geoff does now, so it's cool to hear how he's developed-- I heard somewhere that Tim tutored/ mentored Geoff on a few things (techiquest, etc.). Not sure if that's so, but others might know! :) Thanks for the reply! All the best! :)

It has got to be hard for the judges..they have to pretend that Pentatonix doesn't exist because ALL of these performances are not even close to Penta's performances in my opinion.

Well actually, VoicePlay was not very good back then. But now, I feel like they are better than Pentatonix. I do love Pentatonix, but VoicePlay just sounds better and the bass defo can hit lower than Avi Baelan

Yeah agree, I think that Voice Play are way better than Pentatonix at the moment, they are funnier, more creative and don´t simply cover other songs.

Pentatonic is five really good singers singing well. VoicePlay has morphed into a blend of great theatrical singers. Home Free is one great singer with five voices.

Now going back to this after listening to VP for many years, I am so glad Honey is no longer with the group. Her voice imo just didn't mesh with the boys. I miss Earl but the new members are rocking it out..

There aren't many differences between a capella groups.

Wrong. The difference between a capella groups is how they arrange their songs, and how tight their harmonies are. Being an all vocal group, you have to arrange your songs very smartly, as well as making sure that you also don't lose the spirit of the original track, while ALSO playing to your groups strengths. The difference between Pentatonix and Voice Play is the arrangements. Voice Play had all the right pieces: Well-trained and talented guys who create good harmony, a stellar percussionist, and a really awesome bass. But they didn't arrange it smart where they showcased the guys instead of Honey. I honestly felt like Honey was the weak link of their group because she doesn't know how to blend. You can tell. Pentatonix on the other hand is EXTREMELY smart in how they arrange all their songs. They know how to play to each and every one of them (each member being a powerhouse in what they do for the group), and showcase it well. While also building the song to a crescendo, and keeping the same spirit of the song, while also putting their own spin on it. Plus, their harmonies and support of the vocal lead is FLAWLESS.

Anyone notice the irony in Jewel telling Honey, "A lot of singers are really generic, they're great singers but they kinda sound like other singers,"? I love the job Jewel is doing as a judge here, and she's clearly quite smart and knows what she's talking about. But telling the difference between Jewel, Michelle Branch, and Avril Lavigne is pretty hard if you don't already know their songs.

A great group I love them on the show I actually still talk and work with honey to this day she's still doing her thing.. very talented girl she was not part of this group everybody thought that she was part of this group she just came in with them for the show they are friends

I honestly didnt like these guys much. I agree with duck when he says Honey's voice can get annoying, but I also think they are trying too hard to be like Pentatonix and they just DO NOT have the bass for it. At all
