Something also to consider is that Aikido is an offshoot of DaitoRyu Aikijujutsu- a very ancient art, whose curriculum has changed very little over the centuries. As explained by their current headmaster, Katsuyuki Kondo, a wrist grabbing defense was in response to someone trying to take something out of your hands that you were bringing to your master (kote gaeshi). It's also been explained that someone may grab your wrist to prevent you from drawing your sword. So the historical context must also be considered in addition to the training exercises for these arts.

Thanks for the Video! Excuse me for butting in, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you ever tried - Chireetler Dread Free Rule (just google it)? It is a great one of a kind product for learning self effective defence moves without the normal expense. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate after many years got cool results with it.

I have 5 terms a week plus 2 times separate for Hojo and Bokken, but at the beginning one of those 5 was dedicated to practicing only the falling techniques for beginners. Improve your muscle and joints flexibility! It helped me a lot.

Aikido is a samurai art. It is derived from Aiki-jutsu (the forefather of Judo and Jiu Jutsu). As such it is designed as an art for disarming attackers wielding long weapons such as swords and spears. If a samurai lost a sword in battle then these techniques could be used to disarm an enemy and take his weapon from him. It is not meant to counter empty handed sport fighters like boxers and Mauy Thai fighters. But it can be blended with other arts if empty handed fighting is required.

What is BJJ? If you mean Budojujutsu, I studied under Grandmaster Al Thomas (who passed away Christmas eve 1999) for MANY years. It is a combination of Kodakan Judo, Aikido, Yawara, Taido, Taijitsu, Okinawa Tai karate, and Kung Fu. Also, (though I've not seen him for awhile) I know sensei Rick Mirandette and am here to testify that he is both a good friend and an EXCELLENT martial artist! God bless Rick (and all martial artists) everywhere.

It was originally used by Samurai, so it is most effective at countering an attempted disarm or grab from someone that wants to hold onto you. That is also why the army uses a lot of it in their basic hand to hand courses. It becomes pretty effective when someone tries to grab your gun.

If the attacker's arms are longer than the defender's arms, you can break the grip with a quick double wedge separation technique then proceed with the strike to the chin and the kotegashi throw.

In Aikido we are taught how to break fall (Ukemi) in various different manners and techniques, so when we practise on each other it reduces the risk of injury to Uke (receiver). I can assure you, if this technique was performed on a layperson, who has not been trained to break fall in these techniques, the guys head is getting cracked on the floor, and he's clean out.... fight over.

@GlasgowBlueBear1690 Sensitivity is trained by many martial arts, not just Aikido. There are different types of sensitivity but the most common are visual sensitivity and energy sensitivity. Focus mitt training in boxing is an example of visual sensitivity. Chi soa in Wing Chun, Hubud in Kali, Randori in Aikido, Jiu Jutsu and Judo all require energy sensitivity. Stick and knife fighting require both. Aikido teaches drills to find the center of gravity in motion and disrupt it.

To avoid serious harm. The locks are dangerous. Of course you dont have to flip, you can also drop softly to your knees and fall, but by flipping you have a much greater chance to escape the technique. Same for the rolls etc. You can quickly regain your balance and be prepaired for an attack. Plus with a proper falling technique you reduce the chance of getting hurt while falling. Its a form of self-defence. Btw, we also flip during practice :) not just in demo's, same reasons :)

They are showing the technique slowly... in a practical level the attacker may grab the wrist (or shoulder or whatever) and then launch a punch or knife thrust etc, but when the technique is done quickly at real speed you would have been thrown before you realise your balance has been taken. Mostly at advanced levels, you apply the technique 'just' as they make contact, rather than let them grab you strongly, and 'then' do the technique... it's all about timing in aikido

@GlasgowBlueBear1690 Practiced from is reference point. The goal is to develop sensitivity (the ability to feel and manipulate energy). That sounds all mystical, but what it means is developing ur sense of touch so that u can quickly find ur attackers center of gravity while in motion and disrupt it. If you're throwing punches then an Aikido-ka would probably just raise his elbow to cover his head and elbow u in the face at the same time. Then grab an arm b4 u can recover.

@BriThai A mugger doesn't attack with focus mits on either, That's why it's called a drill. The purpose of the randori is to train both the uke and the tori in the movements and the applications of the technique. It is not meant to simulate what will happen in a fight. They are simply training attributes. Aikido randori teaches u to feel energy and react spontaneously to it with the appropriate response. This does not mean that a fight should look like randori.

@MinmiPenguin His hands r around ur neck. Reach is no issue. The palm strike to the face is only an option if you can reach far enough. If not then the wrist lock alone will do the job. Once his wrist is turned the muscles of his forearm will be strained to the point of tearing. If he tries to resist then he will only add more pressure to the tearing effect. Same thing if he tries to punch w/ the opposite hand. You have to follow the direction of the force to relieve the pain.

@BriThai As I've already pointed out, there are many Aikido students that hold dan rankings in other arts. Although I'm not an Aikido student I plan to study in the future. My current Master holds an 8th Dan in Shotokan and also has dan rankings in Judo, Goshin Jutsu, Aikido and Okinawan Kobudo. Many Aikido students have advanced and diverse MA backgrounds. So if u think that u can just manhandle them then be my guest.
@osensei2987
@osensei2987 12 жыл бұрын
@bailattelo If ur attacked then u have to handle it in any way u can. Kicking, punching, grappling, biting or whatever you've got are all valid options. The opportunity to use Aikido in a real fight is most likely to occur out of the ebb and flow of combat rather than being something that is planned. U just happen get hold to a limb or some other reference point by chance and then u react because u can feel what to do w/o having to think about it.

@BriThai Getting a lock on someone in a fight is something that just happens. It is not a planned event or something that u can strategize or predict. U can only react to it instinctively when it happens. This is why Aikido trains the way that they do. Randori trains u to respond to the energies that are being exerted towards you. When u feel a certain energy then u instinctively react to it. That moment can come if ur in the middle of striking / grappling, etc.

I practiced a martial art called Kemppo, a creation of my last sensei. It's not like the American Kempo or another martial art, but use a lot of ninjutsu and aikido techniques; if u apply that move on a real attacker, he's not, he's not expecting these movements. In that video, the attacker know how to flip the body, and the teacher is not applying this move to hurt his partner: in real life, this hurt a lot, he would even break his wrist and entire arm, and the fall can stun the attacker.
@geckoecho
@geckoecho 11 жыл бұрын
Martial arts, or in this case aikido, it is not to inflict hurt, or do damage, it is to receive that person's attack, and using it against them. Street fighting and self defence are 2 different things. Self defence is used in our everyday lives, when someone comes out of an ally at night and try to stabs you with a blade, what do you do? Most martial atrs will teach you to strike back, fight fire, with fire, but aikido, uses the persons agro, to inflict damage.
@osensei2987
@osensei2987 12 жыл бұрын
@bailattelo In a fight sometimes things happen too fast for u to pick it up with ur vision. If u know how to come into contact with ur attackers body and feel the direction of the force being exerted and can instinctively find his center of gravity then u can disrupt his ability to fight against u. Without balance the attacker cannot hurt u. Being able to feel and disrupt the attacker requires sensitivity which is the ability to feel what's happening and not rely solely on eye sight.

Aikido is powerful stuff. I'd like to try using Judo against it in randori to see if Judo w/b effective at all, but it w/b dangerous because the falls and the throws are different. In Judo we don't train w. joint locks (other than elbow) or throws by way of pressure on the wrist joint or neck. Also, the forward ukemi in Aikido finishes sometimes by rolling onto the knee. This is dangerous in Judo because if you get thrown and land on your knee, you may need surgery to fix it.

@osensei2987
@osensei2987 12 жыл бұрын
@BriThai Also if someone resists the u reverse that energy and turn it into another lock or throw. It called lock flow and its how reversals are done. U don't lock yourself down because the guy is fighting u back. That only leads to a struggle for position and leverage which results in u ending up stuck one position too long. Then u would be an easy target for his friend to wack u on the head w/ a beer bottle. That's the result of meeting resistance w/ resistance.

@osensei2987 I agree. A well rounded game is more effective. That of course doesn't mean there's anything wrong with people only practising Aikido. Some people may do that simply because they really like Aikido and want to concentrate solely on that. Which is good, because that will probably make them a very good Aikido instructor. And even if it may not make them as good a fighter, it will still probably give them a better chance than if they hadn't trained anything at all.
@osensei2987
@osensei2987 12 жыл бұрын
@BriThai All JJ must learn ukemi (break falling). It's the first thing u learn as a white belt not matter what style of jujutsu ur in. Aikido, Judo and JJ are all different schools of JJ. If u don't know how to do ukemi (flip / break fall) then u will not be able to escape joint locks and throws. When uki flips he is actually training in escaping the lock or throw and often he is able to spring back up on his feet and continue the fight. Both uki and tori are being trained at the same time.

I agree with you in that point. It can seen easy, but it's difficult to master these techniques; in fact, i do prefer simples techniques, like a kick in the balls, a punch in his throat or nose. @brottarnacke And footwork. A lot of movement, in and out, but most of all side to side is something which I think should be stressed much more in Aikido, in order to stay elusive. Against a very dangerous opponent, that is an enormous equalizer, not to mention when you need to find a way of running away from multiple opponents.

One concern about the first defense is, Would it work if the attacker's arms are a lot longer? The tori would then have difficulty reaching the attacker's chin. In the defense against the grab, the flow seems interrupted: the attacker stops.

You notice that when the Rick went for the face, his body went side way? This result in 2 actions, first, the opponent is being pulled forward on the side which rick's left shoulder which retreated backward. At the same time, Rick's right side moved forward stretching his distance.This in effect brings the attacker forward to meet an in-coming palm.

@MrStathis77 BJJ uses submission techniques that are found in both Aikido and Traditional JuJutsu. However, BJJ uses the ground to immobilize the attacker b4 these techniques are used. The real disadvantage of BJJ is that u also immobilize yourself in the process thereby making it more difficult to escape if u need to. BJJ puts u in a vulnerable position on the street which is an uncontrolled and hostile environment.

@GlasgowBlueBear1690 FIrstly, Aikido is not a fighting system. It is mostly developed for spiritual enlightenment. Aikido-ka as such are never seen in fights of any kind (competition or otherwise). However, from the standpoint of technique you cannot say that the techniques will not work if used at the right time and in the right context.

hes not actually chocking them, just using their monentum and balance breaking... all aikido techniques have to take balance from the point of impact (in this case wrsit grab contact) otherwise like you said they can be countered. If you manage to take a person off balance there's little they can do. That's why it is the most important part of any aikido technique, so that any throw or joint lock can be applied

@brottarnacke Only in America where u have the McDojo effect. In Japan and perhaps other countries ppl who study Aikido have advanced black belt status in other arts. Aikido is only part of a complete curriculum of budo made up of arts that they've studied like Judo, Jujutsu, Karate, Kendo, Iado, Kyu-do, Sumo, ninjutusu. In the west I think the spiritual aspect of Aikido is the focus moreso than fighting purposes.
