Most manufacturers sell a milder naked version of their superbike, and BMW is no exception with their S1000R. It's version of their electronic suspension (DDC) is also milder with fewer tuning options. While unfortunate, it's not hopeless.

Hi Dave, very informative video. Question, ive been fettling with my suspention both front and rear and somtimes (almost randomly but mainly at slower speeds) it feels like my front end wants to tuck under and im going to fall of the edge of the earth haha. Now i think ive got my rebound pretty well balenced as this was the only thing ive changed since i last test rode when it didnt seem to do this. HOWEVER since then ive also filled up the fuel tank (extra 15kg of weight) and the temperature here has gone up by about 10 degrees C, could these have effected that ? Or if not what could it be ? Cheers Dave
@CatalystReactionSBW
@CatalystReactionSBW 3 жыл бұрын
Oversteer in slow corners is normally rebound too slow holding the fork down. Opening rebound normally cures that issue. It can also be compression too open so the fork travels too fast during the downstroke. As you have rebound set correctly (check tyre wear), the next fettle would be with compression.

Dave....just picked up a 2019 bmw s1000r. I know these things have a wobble at high speed...i have experienced this,some guys replace the factory damper with a decent one Ohlins for example. I'm across the pond mate so can ya help in any way?
@CatalystReactionSBW
@CatalystReactionSBW 3 жыл бұрын
The wobble is from rebound being too fast in the forks so getting them serviced with 7.5w helps tremendously. Forks need to be lowered 2-3mm and that helps as well. Damper is a tool that needs to be set correctly :)

Hi dave recently bought a single R gen2 (2017) When I do the same test for static at the rear it doesn't move. What settings adjusts this? And unfortunately unlike the RR the single doesnt have access to the change rebound and compression in the settings. Soo all I have is manual preload front and rear and road and dynamic modes. Many thanks
@CatalystReactionSBW
@CatalystReactionSBW 8 ай бұрын
Static sag is via shock preload only. If preload is at a minimum and there is no static sag, the spring is under a great deal of compression - eg: 160mm long in the box, 140mm installed with preload at zero.
@512460
@512460 8 ай бұрын
@@CatalystReactionSBW Thank you Dave. So does this mean I currently have too much preload and need to reduce it as currently it's too hard hence why I'm not get any static sag in the rear?
@CatalystReactionSBW
@CatalystReactionSBW 8 ай бұрын
. @512460 That would be the idea yes BUT you have to monitor shock travel used prior to doing this. A tiny amountt of grease on the shock shaft will leave a dust ring. See where travel is now...

You can get softer springs on the bike to give it much more suspension travel and you can lower it 2" to start with Soupy's Performance.

Hi , Wobbling that scares me out with this bike . How It could happen that so high tech bike wobbles ?! How to fix it ??? Bike is new - 600 km ODO No any extra wind protection Tyres - pressure done by manual What helps is : Dynamic mode Spring adjustment screw maximum clockwize - is it correct way to fix it ?
@CatalystReactionSBW
@CatalystReactionSBW 3 жыл бұрын
9( times out of 10, wobbles are from incorrect preload and damping settings. In general, it means that 1. the shock is too soft and there's no weight on the front tire or 2. the shock is rigid driving the front wheel into the ground. Easy to assess via a tape measure and checking sag numbers: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mruedst_rJ2rnYE.html

“Progress...” Yeah right. In a few years when the electronic and even simple electrical faults start occurring on a more regular basis (as they are bound to do), these bikes are going to be killing people. Water and heat and wear all affect wiring and electronic systems. Service centres charge a lot to test them. They cost a lot to replace. Are riders buying these bikes and simply not even LOOKING at their forks to check basic stuff - because the computer is in charge??? We’ve all ridden bikes with normal forks that have weeping fork seals. You just get an oil smear on the chrome and fail the MoT. Top it up if it’s bad, and in theory the risks are minimal. But Upside down forks were made are different matter. When these Darwin test dummies burst their seals by strapping their bikes down too tight on the trailer, the fluid will be on the brakes and road before they hit the truck! Oh dear. Not progress on any level.

Lol That's an overdramatic way to look at it. IF (and huge emphasis on IF as I have a 2015 S1000XR with exactly the same type of electronic suspension and not even a single warning light) they fail and the electronics "stop" working all that happens is the damping is now fixed. It's not gonna change it on the go. It wont make you crash it will just turn your forks into regular old non adjustable forks. D-ESA on these bikes have massive advantages for non track riding. The ability to change suspension characteristics WHILST riding without stopping and getting off is invaluable for a road bike. I'd rather have suspension that's 90% correct 90% of the time than suspension that's 100% correct 10% of the time. All people neglect suspension maintenance whether they have electronic or manual. USD fork failures can be bad but 9/10 times a simple weep won't suddenly soak your brakes and tyres in oil. Forks are meant to compress all the way occasionally that's why they have bump stops. Strapping them down hard won't damage them. USD forks were an immense improvement in rigidity and therefore handling so yes, I'd call that progress.
