Very informative little video! Now I’d like to see one on some of your ideas for uses for this coppiced hazel 😁 I’m going to be planting a bunch of Hazel for coppicing so want to try and find all the various uses it could have!

Hello, thanks for the feedback. I'll be using the hazel for shelter building material for our bushcraft courses as well as a hurdle, basecamp firebox and a saw horse. So a bunch of things really. If I can get round to making a video on it I will :-) Hazel has so many uses, depending on how thick the rods are. It also cleaves very well and is flexible. Finally, any left over pieces that are a bit knotty can be turned into charcoal. Good luck with your planting.

Nice video. I love Hazel, as a thatcher it is a valuable part of our craft, Hazel is coppiced every 6 to 7 years and split into spars which are pointed at both ends and twisted into a staple to attach the thatch. Unfortunately alot of the Dorset coppice are now over stood and out of cycle because of imported spars, they are pre-twisted which saves on time and also stress on the hands. A good tip I learned from an old spar maker is to cover the freshly cut stoods with the trimmings to stop the deer eating the young shoots, this helps with yield and length of the gads.

Thanks for the video! If you did not coppice would the tree just kept on producing? Juat tryimg to figure out the benefit of coppicing besides using the wood.

Hazel really is wonderful. And the nuts! 😋 if you can beat the creatures to them. ... Did ya try any Yew berries yet?

@Maria Campos You're a little hard to understand, sorry. But yeh! You should try the Hazel nuts, and the Yew berries! Yew berries, only eat the red flesh and skin. DO NOT EAT THE SEED.
